The funeral of Miss Adeline Bowen,
whose death occurred at 5 o'clock Friday
morning, at the home of her sister,
Mrs. A. C. Woodmancy, was held
from the Baptist church Sunday at 1
o'clock. Elder E. C. Russell of Rochester,
president of t h e Western New
York Conference of Seventh Day Ad-
ventists, at the request of the deceas-
ed came to Randolph to officiate at
the obsequies. ' He was assisted by
Professor Hottel of the Fernwood
Academy at Tunesassa. The service
at' the church was very impressive
carrying out In detail the arrange-
ments which Miss Bowen had made
some time previous to her death.
The music rendered by Mrs. Wayne.
Cheney and" her daughter, Mrs*
Florence Carr, was very touching, and
although the songs they sang were
selected by her in whose memory the
service was held, no tinge of sadness
prevaded the place but rather a feel-
ing of joy and gladness, made possible
by the thought which was so prominently
brought forth in song and sermon,
that "She is not dead, but
sleepeth." The splendid tribute paid
to the memory of this noble woman by
the minister together with the mes-
sage which she desired him to leave
with her friends was inspiring.
Interment was made in Sample
Hill cemetery.
Sarah Adaline Bowen was the sec-
ond daughter in a family of seven children
bom to the late William and
Harriet Hltchcock Bowen. She was
born Febuary 6th, 1851. and the
greater part of her life was spent on
the old homestead in Bowen- Her

teach the gospel to others. After per
f e ct i n g herself in the study of the
Bible she offered her services to her
church, and for a time was stationed
at Rome, N. Y„ as a missonary secretary
of the Tract Society. Her ef-
icient and faithful service was noted
and in 1884' she was sent to Bassle,
Switzerland. by the Mission Board of
the denomination to connect it with
the Central European Mission then
being established.
After three Years spent in touring
on the continent in the Interest of her
church, she returned to her home here
and after a period of rest-went to
Battle Creek where she took a course
in nursing in order to better serve her
fellowmen. Through this knowledge
she ministered to the physical needs
of those whose lives she waa trying to
win to Christ. Her entire life was
spent in trying to emulate the example
of Him who went about doing good.
Her latest fields of labor were in
Bradford and Salamanca and it was
while in the latter city, she was strick-
en with the disease which caused her
death after three months of intense
suffering, during wh!ch|.her strong
Christian faith enabled her to endure
with cheerfulness and patience unto
the end.

ready mentioned, three brother*: Otis

Otis Franklin Bowen, well known
resident of this township, died at
his home in the Bowen district
Tuesday noon at the age of 85
years. Mr. Bowen had been in falling
health for nearly a year and
had been seriously ill about a
month.
The second son of William and
Harriet Hitchcock Bowen, . Otis
Bowen was born on a farm adjoini
n g the one where he had later
made his home. His father, when
three and a half yars old, had come
Into this section from Henrietta,
this state, with his parents, Mr, and
Mrs. Darius Bowen, Otis Bowen's
grandmother was Almira Torrance
Bowen, and his mother being Harriet
Hitchcock Bowen, he was a
descendent of three of Randolph's
most prominent pioneer families.
His memory of Randolph history,
extending iwk more than 75 years,
was excellent and he loved to retote
incidents of the community, interpreting
them in "the light of
a homespun phllosphy which add.d
Interest for the listener. Mr. Bowen
could remember his grandfather as
wrti as otm*r early Randolph pioneers
and by recalling informs
ation they told him, he was able
in later years to supply otherwise
unknown facts of Randolph history.
Otis Bowen was educated In the
district school, at Chamberlain In-
stitute here, and later attended a
religious college in Battle Creek,
Mich. He taught school for about
a year, but found this type of activity
too confining to suit his tastt,
so he took up the study of surveying
and became proficient In thto
line of work. *
During hie many years as a surveyor,
he did a great amount of
work In Cattaraugus and Chautauqua
Counties. Probably no other
men had so thorough a knowledge
of property lines in the southern
part of the Town of Randolph and
was always glad to be of assistance
tn settling disputes over boundary
lines, but did not accept work when
he knew it would be the basis of
lawsuits, for he believed they
should be avoided.
Mr. Bowen operated his farm,
which he had cleared himself, with
the purpose in view of making his
family as nearly self-sustaining as
possible, an aim which present war
conditions have again brought into
prominence. In earlier years he
enjoyed teaching omen to perform
farm work and he saw the various
translations from ox teem to airplane.
For many years he delivered
dairy products to customers In the
village. On April 24, 1888, he mar
ried Harriet Thomas of Humphrey,
who survives. Other survivors are
a son, Rouland G. Bowwen of Or-
lando, Fla., a daughter, Mrs. Olive
Woodmancy of East Randolph, and
e, brother, Tyler E Bowen of Takoma
Park, Washington.
Funeral services will be conducted
at the Hottink Funeral Home here
Tuesday afternoon, April 21, at 2
o'clock with Elder Lawrence Scott
of the Jamestown district, Seventh
Day Adventist church officiating.
Burial will be in the Bowen family
lot in Sample Hill cemetery.

28115 Randolph NY Register - 4/18/1913

Harlan Bowen was born in Randolph
November 27, 1852, and had lived in
this township-all his llife. He was notoriously
an industrious man and kept
everything about his place neat and or-
derly. He married Miss Effie Williams
in April, 1880, and to them two sons
were born: Charles Lindsey Bowen,
who after obtaining an advanced education
went to Africa,-where be is now
employed as missionary; and Ernest
Nelson Bowen of Randolph. Mr. Bowen
was one of the sturdy, upright farmers
who has made for himself a competency
through constant and untiring labor.
He manufactured a high grade of but-
ter upon his farm and twice each month
he drove to Jamestown where his pro-
ducts sold at a hig price. He was,
like his parents and family, an earnest
member of the Seventh Day Adventist
church, and conscientiously followed
the teachings of that doctrine in lead-
ing a christian life.
The surviving members of the family
have the satisfaction of realizing that
the two men whose lives went out last
Sunday, had lived upright and honor-
able and had.the respect of the entire
community. The funeral, Tuesday afternoon,
was attended by a very large
number of friends, relatives an associ
ates.
BOWEN, Harlan D (I160228)

28116 Randolph NY Register - 4/18/1913

Sudden sickness removed from their
sphere of activity two men of one
family, when on Sunday last William
Bowen, and his son, Harlen Bowe,
both died of pneumonia. Within a
few hours of each other ese two
man who had been closely associated
through a lifetime, died in the same
house, and of similar difficulties.
William Bowe, the oldest man in
Randolph and who had resided here
perhaps longer than any other person,
died Sunday morning, while his son
himself a man of middle age, survived
until some time during the night. A
funeral was conducted at the
home Tuesday afternoon, in charge of
the R. D. Westbrook of Buffalo, and
the burial was made in the family pot
at Semple Hill cemetery.
The family had been afflicted with a
serious epidemi of influenza which in
the cases of the two men resulted in
pneumonia. Harlan Bowen's conditon
was considered somewhat serious about
the middle of last week, but he seemed
to recover and on Thursday last Wil-
liam Bowen addressed a letter to his
daughter in which he stated that he
thought the worst was over, referring
to his son's sickness. The older gen-
tlemen's health was so vigorous that
the sickness did not cause alarm until
the latter part of the week when some
symptoms of pneumonia developed.
William Bower was born at Henriet-
ta, Monroe county, N.Y., September 8,,
1921. His father's name was Darius
Bowen and the parents of William
moved into Randolph aboout 1827. The
older generation was among the very
first to settle in this township, and
since that time this section has been
the home of the family In 1847, on
March 16, William Bowen was united
in marriage with Miss Harriette Hitch-
cock, and to them have been born seven
children; Elsie J Hildom of Chicago;
Addie Adailine of Bradford; Harlan,
who died Sunday; Otis F., of Ran-
dolph; Olive E. Woodmancy of Cold-
en; Milan of Washington. The family
was all present at the funeral except
Mrs.. Hildom.
The double fatility marks the first
death in William Bowen's family, and
that is all the more singular for one so
advanced in age when it is known tat
but one death has occurred in the
families, composed as they are
of severa children each. Mr. Bowen
has been in very vigorous health, and
only last month he walked three miles
to visit with some friends. He occu-
pied his time with the lighter forms of
farm work and kept regular hours for
sleep and refreshment.
