2951 | Auburn NY Citizen - 3/26/1918 Funeral services for Irving Brewster, one of the best known residents of the town of Ledyard and collector for that township, who died suddenly Sunday morning while on a visit to the home of Charles Hopkins in the town of Scipio will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late home Rev. Thomas Huff of Scipioville will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. •Mr. Brewster was 57 years old n.d resided at Barber's Corners. Mr. and Mrs. Brewster had driven to the Hoskins home and on their arrival Mr. Brewster was taken ill. Dr. B. K. iHoxie was summoned from Sherwood, but the man was beyond medical assistance. Death was caused by an acute heart attack due to a complication of diseases. About three years ago Mr. Brewster underwent a delicate operation and since that time his health has not been of the best it is said. He was born in Utica in 1887, came to Auburn when a small boy with his parents and was educated in the public schools of this city. He was one who made friends by his pleasant ways. 2959 | Auburn NY Citizen - 5/26/1911 Gertrude M. Braunig, daughter of Mrs. William Ness and the late Nicholas Braunig, died at the family home, No. 57 1/2 Washington street, yesterday morning. She was born in Utica Aug. 1, 1891, came to Auburn with her family when a 'small girl and was educated in the public schools of this city. Her father died June 12, 1905. Her death is peculiarly sad, tuberculosis being the cause, and while the end was not unexpected, it came very suddenly, she having been ill since last January. Besides her mother, Mrs.. William Ness, she is survived by her grandmother, Mrs. Sarah J. Scranton, and three brothers, Le Roy, William K, and Bernard N. Braunig, all of this, city. 2961 | Auburn NY Citizen - 5/5/1927 The funeral of Mary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bilinski was held from the home of the parents, 40 Chase Street, at 8:30 this morning, with services at St. Hyacinth's Church at 9 o'clock and was very largely attended. At the church the mass of the angels was isung by F a t h er Blaze after which he read the children's burial service. During the services very appropriate music was rendered by the choir. He was born March 16, 1850, in Union Springs and lived all his life in or near that locality. Batt. son of Mrs. Rosa R. Batt of North Tonawanda, N. Y., by the Rev. Dean J. J. Rickey, pastor of the church. The bride was attended by Miss Genevieve Batt, a sister of the groom, as bridesmaid and Mrs. Fred S. Johnson, sister-in-law of the bride, was maid of honor, while the groom was attended by Fred S. Johnson a brother of the bride. The bride was nicely gowned In a silk taffeta suit of silver grey with hat to match. The bridesmaid wore a pretty dress of white lace net and the maid of honor wore a blue silk dress trimmed in gold. All carried a bouquet of roses. 2969 | Auburn NY Citizen - 8/14/1926 John Henry VandenBosch, 77, retired real estate man, former city street superintendent and one of Auburn's prominent citizens, died at 5 o'cloek yesterday afternoon at the Auburn City Hospital, after an illness of only a week's duration. Mr. VandenBosch was born in Holland in 1819, coming to the United States at an early age. He settled in Auburn about 31 years ago. Reputed to have become wealthy in the oil business, he bought a tract of land some Tears ago on the site of what is now VandenBosch Avenue, and extending to Steele Street, Lake Avenue, and Swift Street, He mapped out the streets on this plot of ground and with the aid of his SOB, built several houses upon his property, which he afterwards sold. During the year 1902, he became street superintendent under Mayor Thomas Mott Osborne. He had not been engaged in active business for some time. Last June Mr. and Mrs. VandenBosch celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, after 50 years of married life. About a week ago, he was taken to; the hospital for an operation from which he failed to rally. His death came as a shock to a host of friends in this city. Survivors are his wife; one son, John VandenBosch of Niagara Falls; two daughters, Mrs. R. L. Broadhead, Auburn; and Mrs. Frank Robinson of Syracuse; 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Private funeral services will be held at the late home, 95 Swift Street, Monday afternoon, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Soule Cemetery. The omission of flowers is requested. 2973 | Auburn NY Citizen Advertiser Albert W Bement, of 42 South Street, retired prison guard and Spanish War veteran, died Wednesday at the Bath Veterans Facility from a heart ailment ot several years standing He had a wide acquaintanceship in Spanish- American War v e t e r a ns circles, having been a past com. mander of Maj. Louis B. Lawton Camp of this city and attending in the capacity of delegate many state and national conventions of the organisation. He was also well known and a favorite among members of camps in Central New York having been a frequent guest and visitor at numerous meetings and ceremonials. Albert Bement was born in Victor, N. Y. After his retirement from military service he entered the service of New York State as a prison guard. He was appointed prison guard April 1, 1909, and assigned to duty at Clinton Prison. In July 1911 he was transferred to duty at Great Meadow Prison, and returned to duty at Dannemora in 1923. He came to Auburn Prison August 8, 1926 and retired, from the service September 4, 1937. He had one thrilling experience in the prison yards, at the time Howard Keavin, the Geneva yegg, and Jimmy McGrath made their sensational escape in which he was held up by the fleeing prisoners before their dash over the north wall in Wall Street. Since his retirement Mr. Bement had been in more or less poor health. He went to Florida for his health but found little relief. For years he had centered his efforts for increased pensions for veterans and widows of the Spanish-American veterans as well as veterans of other wars. He was always found ready for services in relieving the distress of his comrades and families. Mr. Bement was a past commander of Major Louis B Lawton Post, United Spanish War Veterans, and member of allied organizations, a member of Cayuga Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars: Cayuga Lodge. 143. Knights of Pythias: Auburn Tent of Maccabees and the Prison Guards Association. He served on committees in charge of Memorial Day and other patriotic gatherings in Auburn. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Langbam Funeral Service in East Genesee Street. Friends have been Invited to call at the Langham parlors from 7 to 9 o'clock Thursday evening and from 3 to 5 o'clock Friday afternoon and 7 to 9 o'clock Friday evening. Daniel Wheeland officiating. A solemn high mass of requiem was sung at 11 a.m. at St. Al- phosaus Church by Father Wheel- and, assisted by the Rev. Fred- erick J. Eisemann as deacon and the Rev. Bernard c. Casper as subdeacon. At the conclusion of the Mass the burial service was read. Burial was in the family plot inSt. Joseph's Cemetery where the committal service was conduct- ed by the Rev. Robert G Kreckel. Bearers were Thomas F. Walsh, John C. Walsh, Edward J. Walsh, Robert J. Crawford, Robert J. Herron and Ross P. Westcott, nephews of the deceased. The recitation of the Rosary was led by Father Kreckel Wed- nesday evening at the home. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, affiliated with the parish Rosary-Scapular Society and Auburn Court Catholic Daughters of America. Active in local organizations, Betty was a member and former president of the Auxiliaries of Post 1975 Veterans of Foriegn Wars; W. Mynderse Rice Post 97 American Legion; Auburn Lodge 474 B.P.O. Elks; Auburn Council 207 Knights of Columbus and the Auburn Letter Carriers. A tireless member and past president of the Cayuga County Democratic Woman's Club; she was a former committee person in the tenth ward and second ward of Auburn. She was unsuccessful as a candidate for supervisor while residing in the tenth ward. She had served many years as an election inspector. She was also active as a volunteer worker at the Red Cross; Mercy Rehabilitation Center; Canandaigua Veteran's Hospital and the Syracuse Veteran's Hospital. Lange, retired employe of the Fleishman Yeast Company, now part of General Foods, and a well known Auburnian, died last night at his home, 57 Clark Street. He had been in poor health for the past few months, but had been able to be out greeting friends during the past week. For more than 30 years he had charge of the Fleishman yeast agency In Auburn and vicinity. He was a well known figure in those days as he drove his fine horse drawn rig about Auburn and to towns in this vicinity. In the toughest of winter weather he made his rounds to towns around Auburn, and drove about the city, rarely missing his route in the worst of winter snows and drifts. He retired from active business about 15 years ago. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
