3101 | August 14, 2012 Daniel A. Buttery Niagara Gazette LEWISTON — Daniel A. Buttery, age 62, of Lewiston, died on Monday, August 13, 2012 in the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident, while returning home from the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, SD. Dan was born on August 23, 1949 in Lewiston, the son of the late Donald and Ada Mae (Murray) Buttery. A lifelong resident of Lewiston, he was a 1967 graduate of Lewiston Porter High School. He worked as a mechanic for the New York State Parks from 1969 to 1980. Dan then worked as a truck driver for North American Van Lines for two years. In 1982, he was hired as a Car Hauler for Leaseway/Anchor Motor Freight in Niagara Falls and worked there until he was injured at work in 1993. Dan retired young and enjoyed being with his family. A "jack of all trades and a master of most", Dan had many talents. He enjoyed working with his son, Daniel, restoring cars. He was a skilled welder, woodworker, mechanic, and fabricator. One of Dan's proudest achievements was remodeling his family's home that was built in 1905. A real "character", Dan enjoyed being a jokester and making people laugh with his great sense of humor. His gift of gab made strangers feel like friends and with his heart of gold he was willing to help friend and strangers alike. He was an avid NASCAR and NHRA fan. Dan's one passion was riding his Harley Davidson Rocker C. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, and Ruby, Roxy, Gracie, Teddy, Chevelle, and Twinkie. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Valerie (Olszewski) Buttery; his children, Jason Buttery of Youngstown, Briana Kislack of Niagara Falls, and Daniel Buttery, Jr. of Lewiston; his grandchildren, Justin and Brandon; a sister, Debra Ross of Peoria, AZ; a niece, Tracey Dutson; a step-brother, George (Darcy) Perry of Ransomville; and his special cousins, Susan Hillman and Brenda (Canfield) Swidergal. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald A. Buttery, Jr.; and his step-mother, Ruth (Sutherland) Perry Buttery. He was loved by his late father-in-law, Edward S. Olszewski. Paul enjoyed boating, canoe trips and camping but his greatest joy was his time with his family, especially his daughter Elyssa. Born in Bath, ME, Charlie proudly served his country in the US Army. He was a talented carpenter who owned his own successful business, working in many different capacities throughout his career until he retired. In 1995 Charlie moved to Florida from North Tonawanda, NY, living in Ft. Lauderdale, Palmetto and finally settling in Leesburg. He then continued to work for another nine years in a local marina, combining his love of carpentry and boats until he was 75. Charlie loved motorcycles, sailing and bicycling. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 60 years, Jacqueline; his children, Shyla (Richard) Chapman of North Tonawanda, Donna (Philip) Bronschidle of Tonawanda, Tammie-Jo Graf of North Tonawanda, and Jeffrey (Lori) Robinson of North Tonawanda. 3105 | August 15, 2008 MILDRED SHERWOOD Mildred(Millie) Sherwood, formally of Sanborn, passed away Friday, August 8, 2008 in Venice, FL, after a brief illness. Millie was born May 18, 1924 in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Fred and Mabel Berger. She graduated from LaSalle High School and worked for a short time for the Wendt's Dairy. She married her high school sweetheart, William Sherwood on her birthday, May 18, 1946. Millie then left her job to raise her family and help with the family farm. She spent many years selling produce at the Niagara Falls City Market, even after becoming snow birds and traveling to Florida for the winter. They officially gave up farming and retired to Venice eight years ago. Besides her husband, Bill, she is survived by her children, Kenneth (Jane) of Sanborn, David (Bonnie) of Venice FL, Patricia (Mark) Jenks of Lakewood, OH and Douglas (Kim) of Newfane, NY; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Edward, Robert, Richard and Fred Berger, and sisters, Eleanor Piper and Mickey Benthin, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, William Sherwood, Jr. Mildred was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockport and the Venice Nokomas Methodist Church. Lutheran Church in Wheatfield, exempt member of the St. Johnsburg Fire Company, where he's been a member since 1941, was employed at the Wurlitzer Company for 40 years and later at Voss Mfg. She was a volunteer with LADD in Niagara Falls and was a member of the Ladies Aide at St. Andrew's Church. Mrs. Kroening enjoyed gardening around her home. She was the wife of the late Raymond C. Kroening, who died in October of 1980. Mrs. Kroening is survived by three sons, Ronald (Sandra) Kroening, David (Sue) Kroening and Mark (Donna) Kroening, all of Ransomville, NY; two daughters-in-law, Janelle Kroening and Debbie Kroening; one sister, Doris Tudor. She was born in Tonawanda, NY on July 7, 1910, the daughter of the late John L. and Martha A. (Solomon) May. She was predeceased by her husband, James A. Reid; brothers, Howard May and Raymond May and sisters, Edna (May) Elworthy and Mildred May. She is survived by five nieces and nephews, John A. May, Marilyn (May) Updegraff, Donna (May) Burolla, Kenneth J. May, Carolyn (Elworthy) Waterman; 16 great and 26 great-great- nieces and nephews. Florence became a legal secretary and worked in Tonawanda after graduation from Tonawanda High School. The May family moved to a farm on Lockport Rd. in Sanborn, NY in 1926. She married James Reid on Sept. 4,1943, and was married for 51 years and resided in Sanborn. Florence was very community and family oriented. She was an active member of Sanborn Methodist and Hope United Methodist in Pekin, NY. She served as a Treasurer for the church for many years and helped coordinate many "rummage sales", bake sales and funeral receptions. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed seeing the family grow and hearing stories of what was going on in their lives. Although never experiencing the gift of having her own children, she managed to acquire mother-nurturing skills that will be missed. Even at age 103, she had grace, dignity, integrity and never complained. The family thanks the staff at Alterra Sterling Home, 6741 Nash Rd., Tonawanda, for all the loving care given Florence. St. Mary's Hospital for over 30 years, where she received many awards for her dedication and compassion from the hospital. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, playing golf, gardening and yard work around her home. Mrs. Schimschack was the wife of the late Robert C. Schimschack and the late Loran Smyth. Born in Westfield, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline (Catona) Riscili. Frances worked for many years in the cafeteria at the former South Junior High School in Niagara Falls, NY. Following her retirement from the school system, she continued to work banquets at the Niagara Falls Convention Center, until she was 80 years old. In her leisure she enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, particularly Canasta. Most importantly, Frances was dedicated to her family, especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, and will remembered for the good times while making her own pizza. Mrs. Natale was predeceased by her husband, Giovanni "John" Natal, in 1971. Mrs. Wagner was born in the Town of Royalton on July 6, 1925, daughter of the late Joseph and Selma (Mietz) Heim. She was a lifelong resident of the Royalton area and was a graduate of Akron High School. She and her husband, Harold F. Wagner, were married on June 17, 1925 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Wolcottsville. She was employed as the Office Manager for over fifty years for A.A. Nodine Insurance. Mrs. Wagner was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir at St. Michael's and was a long time member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She was also a member of the Wolcottsville Senior Citizens and the Town of Royalton Historical Society. Mrs. Wagner was an avid gardener, enjoyed euchre and she was involved in all of her nieces and nephews lives-always remembering every birthday, anniversary or special occasion. Mrs. Wagner was predeceased by two sisters, Pearl Voelker and Mavis Mullen; a niece, Joanne Dent; a great-nephew, Billy Mullen; and a brother-in-law, Richard Voelker. Larry loved camping and NASCAR. He had enjoyed drag racing at the Niagara Dragway, spending time at the casino and being with people and working. He was born in Niagara Falls on August 22, 1949, the son of the late Robert L. Ankenbauer and Marion G. (Eydt) Ankenbauer. He attended local schools and graduated from LaSalle Senior High School. After high school Gary served honorably in the U.S. Army for 20 years, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He served as an infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War, and during the latter half of his distinguished military career he twice earned the prestigious James A. Carroll award for exceptional service managing Army Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer Clubs. After retiring from the military Gary continued in the food service field as Director of Restaurants for All American Plazas, Inc, a chain of travel plazas with locations in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio and New York. Gary was an avid fisherman, a huge Buffalo Bills fan and loved telling jokes and stories. He also enjoyed golfing, cooking for his family, and watching westerns and war movies. He was preceded in death by his parents (Robert and Marion Ankenbauer) and his sister Donna (Ankenbauer) Griffith. Gary is survived by his loving companion of 34 years, Mary Beaman; his four children: Scott Ankenbauer (ID), Mandy Padilla (CA), Amber Given, (ID) and Cory Ankenbauer (ID); and his two stepchildren: David Beaman (KY) and Jennifer Intrieri (PA). Boddy, age 86, of the Town of Wheatfield and formerly of North Tonawanda, died Sunday, August 21, 2011, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, after a brief illness. Born in Lockport, NY to the late George C. and Jessie N. (McNair) Boddy, he had been a resident of North Tonawanda for the greater part of his life, and had lived in the Town of Wheatfield for the past five years. George had been employed as a machinist for the North Tonawanda Department of Public Works for 20 years, retiring in 1987. He was a US Navy Veteran of WW II and served on the Destroyer Escort 163. George was a member of Stephen Sikora Post No. 1322 American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1411, both in North Tonawanda; the Great Lakes Kite Society, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Assoc., and the Senior Citizens of the Salvation Army. He was a 50-year member of Gratwick Hose Fire Co. in North Tonawanda. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife of six years, Jeannette L. (Hammond) Boddy; three children, Elwayne (Debra) Boddy of Franklinville, NY, Kevin (Gail) Boddy of Wichita, KS, and Brian (Robin) Boddy of North Tonawanda; two grandchildren, Arron Boddy and Melissa Swan; a sister, Pearl Boddy; and a sister-in-law, Alice (late Sherwood) Boddy, both of North Tonawanda. Also survived by 10 step-children, several step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 3133 | August 22, 2011 Matthew C. Lanighan Lockport Union-Sun & Journal LOCKPORT — Matthew C. Lanighan, Ph.D., passed away August 19, 2011, under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice. Born in Lockport on June 15, 1934, the son of William R. “Ray” and Marjorie (Comstock) Lanighan, Matt was in the 3rd graduating class from DeSales Catholic High School where he played football. He worked at the post office in Lockport while attending Niagara University, graduating in 1956 with a degree in chemistry. There he met Patricia "Paddy" Smith, whom he married at St. John de LaSalle Church in Niagara Falls, NY on June 13, 1959. He earned a Master's in physical chemistry from Niagara in 1965, and a PhD in aquatic biology from the University at Buffalo in 1979. Matt served in the Navy from 1956 until 1959 as an engineering officer on a radar picket ship, the USS Lookout. He worked at Harrison Radiator as a process engineer for a number of years until he joined the staff of the Erie County Public Health Laboratory in 1967. He held the positions of Senior Sanitary Chemist, Assistant Director and was the Director of the Public Health Laboratory for Erie Country before retiring in 1994. While there he did extensive work on Erie County streams, childhood lead poisoning and AIDS. He also taught classes in environmental science at Daemen College. An active volunteer his whole life, he was a youth baseball coach, science fair judge, church school teacher and an active scout leader. Summers at Camp Ditmar and the annual Long Lake canoe trip were favorites. He served as a merit badge counselor until a few years ago. Since retiring "Dr. Matt" gave his time to many groups including The Dale Association, where he was involved in many capacities including Chairman of the Board, the Properties Board and the Income Tax group. He was appointed to the Board of Complete Senior Care, a joint program of The Dale Association and HANCI. Matt was also past president of the St. John's Parish Council where he was one of the original writers of their charter. In addition to being active with the food pantry, he was a financial advisor for the St. Vincent DePaul Society and served as secretary. In 2001 he was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award "given to honor seniors who make outstanding contributions to the lives of others", and in 2007 he was presented with the Bette Dale Award for "commitment to the older adult community". He enjoyed serving as a member of the Niagara County Soil and Water Board and the Niagara County Genealogy Society Board, and was a member of the City of Lockport Fire Board. Matt rarely missed his grandkids' concerts or sporting events and traveled overseas extensively with his wife. A man of many interests, he was an avid reader, bridge player, boogie boarder and wood carver in his later years. Matt is survived by his wife, Patricia “Paddy” Smith Lanighan; father of Kevin W. 3135 | August 23, 2012 Howard Earl "Bud" Griffith Niagara Gazette LEWISTON — Howard Earl "Bud" Griffith, age 77, of Lewiston, died on Tuesday, August 22, 2012 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Howard was born on February 2, 1935 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Chester and Lila Mae (Vandenbosch) Griffith and was a 1952 graduate of LaSalle High School. Upon graduation, Howard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably until his retirement from the Navy in 1972. He served as a radioman during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Following his retirement, he moved to Miami and served as a Police Officer with the Miami Dade Police Department for 20 years, and then with the Immigration and Naturalization Service at the Miami International Airport. In 1998, Howard moved back home to Western New York with his wife, Melody, and daughter, Jennifer, to Lewiston where he spent the remainder of his life. Howard was an active and loved member of the community, spending a great deal of his time working in the Lewiston Kiwanis Club as Chairman of the Lewiston Peach Festival in 2009. He was also the Quartermaster for Lower River VFW Post #7847, a member of the American Legion, and the Lower Niagara Moose Lodge #584 of Lewiston. Howard is survived by his wife, Melody; his daughter, Jennifer Griffith, both of Lewiston; a sister, Jackie Filosofos of Grand Island; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. She enjoyed reading Danielle Steele novels and was an active member of North Tonawanda Senior Center. He was 65 years of age. Larry was born January 21, 1946 in Port Allegany, PA to the late Elmer and Mary Clute. He was the beloved husband of Debra (Hubbard) Clute. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1964. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967, with a tour of duty in Vietnam in the 1st Cavalry Air Mobility. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 77. Larry was most recently employed at Niagara Rehabilitation and Nursing Center as a security guard. Prior employment was at Kimberly Clark and other Niagara Frontier factories. Other than his wife, he is survived by a brother, James Clute (Pauline) of Hamburg, NY; a sister-in-law, Mary Clute of Niagara Falls; nephews and nieces, Christopher, Linda, Kristen, Gary, Michelle, Lori, Scott, Shannon and cousins. He was “Daddy, Pops and Grampy” to the family of his heart, Andrea Carson and James Colwell of Franklin, PA, and Krista Johnson of Niagara Falls. A lifelong resident of the Tonawandas, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Lutetia Ross and was the sister of the late Florence, John, Iona, Samuel, Catherine, Dorothy, William, Anna and Janet. A 1946 graduate of North Tonawanda High School, she had been employed at both Remington Rand Corp and Riley Gear in North Tonawanda. Jessie was a longtime member of Tonawanda United Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed Square and Round dancing and was active in bowling and golfing. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas E. Garrity; her daughter, Letetia (Mark) Dahlquist of Grand Island; three grandchildren, Thomas (Grace) Dahlquist, James Dahlquist and Nancy Dahlquist; and two sisters, Nancy Thorpe of Lockport and Marian (Leo) Ziegler of the Town of Tonawanda. Henrietta was a homemaker, a life-long member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, and avid book reader and loved baking apple pies. She is survived by her daughter, Frances (late Ronald) Lochocki of Tonawanda, NY; daughter in-law, Barbara Bernat, Jr. of Niagara Falls, NY; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Ina (nee Fullington) Miller. Ardys was employed as a clerk at Parson's Drug Store, Eckerd Drugs and Rite Aid Pharmacy before retiring. She was the wife of the late Frederick K. Hamm, who died in 1987; mother of the late Roger F. Hamm; grandmother of the late Eric F. Hamm-Johnson; and sister of the late Carol Eberle, Richard Miller, Donald Miller and Merle Miller. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Donald) Hamm-Johnson; three sons, Merle (Marinna) Hamm, Frederick (Gail) Hamm and Jeffrey (Janice) Hamm; ten grandchildren, Eric, Sarah, Kaitlyn and James Hamm, Jennifer Wagner, Krista (David) Stryker, Matthew (Peggy) Hamm-Johnson, Susan and Donald (Sandra) Johnson and Linda (Donald) Shultz; four sisters, Melva Budnik, Nina Miller, Joyce Wankasky and Betty Miller; and three brothers, Rolland Miller, Michael Miller and Ronald Miller. 3150 | August 28, 2013 Chief Stuart E. Patterson Niagara Gazette TUSCARORA NATION — Chief Stuart E. Patterson, of the Tuscarora Nation, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at his home under the care of his family and Niagara Hospice. He was a member of the Beaver Clan, born in Lockport, NY, on April 25, 1934, the son of the late Percy and Eleanor (Chew) Patterson, Sr. Chief Patterson graduated Niagara Falls High School and from Trott Vocational High School. He served with the US ARMY, 969th Engineer Battallion. Chief Patterson was an electrician, with Labor Local # 237, receiving his 60 year pin this year. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching them play lacrosse and watching cartoons with a bowl of ceral with them, traveling, all types of music, playing the guitar and cards, doing word puzzles, playing tetris and watching NASCAR and Indy Racing. Chief Patterson will be remembered for his ability to talk to anyone, anywhere and with in a couple of minutes find a friend in common. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris C. (Sharrow) Patterson; one son, Patrick Patterson; six daughters, Mary (Elton Carr) Patterson, Pamela (Douglas Coleman) Tierney, Marie A. Patterson, Elena (Paul) Foxe, Kristy Patterson and Pamela (Jake King) Meness; one brother, Percy (Deanna) Patterson, Jr.; five sisters, Pat Wegerski, Clara (Lawrence) Fish, Prisciela Williams, Sarah (Tom) Kennedy, Kathleen Wheatley. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and his extended family. Chief Patterson was the grandfather of the late Brian S. Patterson; brother of the late Myron "Monk" and Norman Patterson and Beatrice Best. The family will be present at the family home, 1983 Upper Mountain Road, after 1:00 PM on Thursday through Saturday, where Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 10:00 AM.
