Sept. 1— T h e death of Mrs. Harriet Bement, widow of Henry Bement. occurred at 5:30 o'clock Sunday morning, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Ira Corey, in East Main street in this village, as the result of injuries received on Saturday afternoon, when she was struck by an automobile, knocked down and ran over. Mrs. Bement resided in West Main street. at the borne of her daughter, and she was en route for the home of her granddaughter. When in front of the garage of Charles A. Sale in Main street, Irving Boughton, of this town, started to back his touring car out of the building down a grade, across the sidewalk to the road. Mr. Boughton had the top of the automobile up. and this prevented his seeing, and Mrs. Bement was very deaf and did not hear the approach of the machine, and she was walking with a parasol up. which hindered her seeing the car. Persons in the vicinity screamed, to both the driver of the machine and the woman, but the laater did not hear, and the driver was attentive to his car. and after he had knocked the woman down and the rear wheel had passed over her body, he temporarily stopped his machine, but before the Injured woman could he taken from her perilous position, the drlver of the car started up a again, deciding that the screaming was not meant for him. and the front wheels passed over the prostrate woman. Mr. Boughton was horrified when he discovered what had happened. The injured woman was picked up and carried to the home of her granddaughter, and Dr. A. M. Mead and Dr. C A. Rowley were hastily snmmoned. It was at once known that the woman was in a critical condition, having suf- fered terribly from both pain and shock. but she was not wholly unconscious. The Injuries consisted of a broken collarbone, two ribs, one having pierced her lung. a sprained ankle and wrist, bruises about her face and neck and minor bruises about her entire body. Everything that was possible for the injured woman's comfort was done, but death soon followed. The accident was witnessed by the injured woman's daughter, who was seated not far ahead in the automobile of a relative. George Bement. and waiting for Mrs Bement to take a drive with them. The daughter realized that an accident was inevitable and tried to mo- tion her mother to go hack, but the lat- ter did not see her daughter. Mrs. Bement was a woman of excel- lent character, kindly i n manner, and with many friends. She was 7 8 years old and had spent the most of her life here. Her husband was for manv years a constable of the town. Mrs. Bement was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, and until afflicted with deafness was an active member, taking a keen interest in the different branches of church work. She leaves one daughter. Mrs William Bloodgood. of this village, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Ira Corey, of this village, and Howard Bloodgood. of Honeoye Falls, with two great-grandchildren. The body has been taken to the home in West Main street and the funeral will be held from there at 2 o'clock Tuesd ay sfternoon. Rev. Frank W. Hill, of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate and burial will be held in the Boughton Hill cemetery. Coroner William Armstrong, of Can- andaigua, came here on Sunday and in- vestigated the accident, and interviewed several of the witnesses, after which he exonerated Mr. Boughton of any blame. | Harriet (I138465)

He was 84 years old and had lived In this community many years. He was active In Republican politics and was truant officer for many years and also chief of police. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Paul Kemmets In the German M. 3454 | Batavia NY Daily News - 1/23/1912 Thomas D. Bossart died at 10 o'clock this morning at his home. No. 594 East Main street, from tuberculosis. He had been In ill health about a year. He was born on July 1, 1895, and came to Batavia from Stafford with his parents a year ago. Surviving the boy are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bossart; two brothers, Harry and Mark, and a sister, Anna, all at home. He was a member of the Stafford Methodist church and the Rev. C. W. 3460 | Batavia NY Daily News - 11/9/1916 East Pembroke, Nov. 9.-Mrs. Caroline A. Bennett, a highly esteemed resident of this village, died from heart disease at 11:45 o'clock last night. She had not been in good health for several years. She had been confined to her bed ten days. Mrs. Bennett's maiden name was Caroline A. Hendricks, and she was born on November 15, 1843. She was married to James F. Bennett at Alexander on December 29, 1868. He died in March. 1868. She possesssed a kindly disposition, which endeared her to all who knew her. She la survived by a son, Frank Bennett of Byron: a daughter, Mrs. A. G. Ellinwood of Batavia, and a brother, Lewis Hendricks of East Pembroke. She was a member of the Stafford Grange and of Naomi Rebekah Lodge. 3462 | Batavia NY Daily News - 12/13/1921 Mrs. Lucy Lavina Blair, widow of Eli Blair, died at her home, No. 23 Seaver place, at 12:30 o'clock this morning from a hardening of the arteries. She had been in ill health six weeks and confined to her bed two weeks. Mrs. Blair, who was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Jennings, was born at Venice, Cayuga county, on April 3, 1841. She was married to Mr. Blair at Venice when 23 years old. They immediately moved to Batavia, where they resided for a short time, after which they moved to South Byron. They resided there thirty years, after which they returned to Batavia. Mr. Blair died nine years ago. Mrs; Blair is survived by three brothers, Joel B., Mortimer and Cranson Jennings, all of Moravia, Cayuga county; three sons, William B. Blair of Batavia, John J. Blair of Flat, Alaska, and Morgan L. Blair of Buffalo; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Warner of Buffalo, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Blair was the moth- er of the late Charles Blair, the city pa- trolman. She was a member of the By- ron grange. Funeral services will be held at Mrs. Blair's late residence, No. 23 Seaver place, at 2 o'clock on Thursday after- noon. 3464 | Batavia NY Daily News - 12/23/1908 Corfu, Dec. 23.-Mrs. Augusta Buckman, widow of Fred Buckman, took her own life by hanging in the kitchen of her home, 2 1/4 miles west of this village, at an early hour this morning. Her body was found by her 16-year-old son Frank. her oldest boy at home when he went down stairs from his bed room at 6:30 o'clock. Coroner Hummel was notified and he viewed the body and will render a verdict of suicide. Mrs. Buckman had taken a small rope, fastened it to the upper part of a door frame and then had wound the rope around her neck and sank to the floor on her knees. In this position her body was found. When her son made the discovery he ran across the road to C. D. Silliman's and secured help and the body was taken down. The only cause assigned for the rash act is that Mrs. Buckman was despondent. She left no note, not did she terf any of her people that she contemplated suicide. Two months ago her son Bert, IV years old and the mainstay of the family, departed from home, and his mother was left with live boys and two girls, the oldest of whom was 16 years. Two days ago she sold her 96-acre farm to N. A. Brown and received a small payment down. She. was to have gone to Batavia today to get the deed and the search to complete the transfer. Mrs. Buckman was 50 years old and Is survived by 12 children, all of whom reside in this vicinity. They are George, Fred, Bert. Frank. Mabel. 3466 | Batavia NY Daily News - 12/26/1916 Charles Otis Blair, a patrolman in the Batavia police department, died at 9 o'clock on Sunday morning at his home, No. 24 Montclair avenue, from tubercular meningitis. Mr. Blair had been confined to his bed five weeks. Mr. Blair was born at Byron pn June 17. 1870, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Ell Blair. On December 25, 1894, he married Miss Olive A. Gardner at South Byron and had he lived another day he would have observed the 22d anniversary of his wedding. Twenty-two years ago also Mr. and Mrs. Blair moved to Batavia, and 12 years ago under the first administration of Mayor Burkhart, as president of the village, he was sworn in as a police officer. Under former Mayor H. M. Johnson he was made a captain of police, the office being created at that time. Mr. Blair was also prominent in the Are department, where he served as second assistant chief under Chief William Locke. He was an honorary member of the Zephyrs until that company was disbanded with the passing of the volunteer department. He was a member of t h e Batavia Exempt Firemen's Association and the Modern Woodmen of''America. He was a warm-hearted and likeable man who had hosts of friends and his death will be sincerely mourned. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Harold Gardner Blair; his mother, Mrs. Lucy A. Blair; a brother, William B. Blair, and a sister, Mrs. Pearl V. Warner, all pf Batavia, and two other brothers, John J. Blair of Alaska and Morgan L. Blair of Buffalo. The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from his late home, the Rev. S. U. Allen of Batavia and Miss Olive Peard of East Pembroke was solemnized at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peard. at 4 p. m. yesterday. They were attended by R. K. Brayley and Miss Mary Brownell, both of Elba, were married by the Rev. Mr. Shorts. The bride was becomingly attired in a gown of navy blue serge, with a hat u. match and carried pink carnations. The bride and groom were attended by Miss Florence Bignall of at a via and Nelson Dorf of Elba. Relatives present were E. R. Brayley and Miss Edith Brayley, father and sister of the Broom; Miss Ethel Brownell, sister of the bride, and Miss Allda Barber and Louts Mills. Immediately after the ceremony the bridal party repaired to the home of the groom, where a fine repast was served. The bride was the recipient of many pretty and useful gifts in china, silver, art pieces and money. Mr. and Mrs. Brayley have a large circle of friends who will extend congratulations and beat wishes. They will reside at the Brayley homostead. Blaine, with Gay Walker and a couple of young women, went driving last eveniug about 11 o'clock and while crossing Gibson bridge, one of the girls lost her muff in the river. Blaine and Wicker jumped out of the rig and got a boat, which proved to be a leaky one They rowed out into the river to get the muff. When the boat went down. Blaine was drowned, but Walker assisted in get- ing to shore. Walker did all he could to help his companion, but was unable to save him. Search was made immediately for the body. Mrs. Bennett, whose maiden name was Barlow, was born In Batavia in October, 1847, and came to this place with her parents when she was 2 years of age. On November 25, 1874, she was married to Hiram L. Bennett, who survives her. She is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Blair of Batavia and Miss Hattle M. Bennett of this village; her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Barlow, Sr., and one brother, William Barlow, Jr. Mrs. Bennett was a woman of exemplary character and endeared herself- to all who knew her by her upright Christian life. She had been a member of the Presbyterian church for many years and leaves many friendp, who sympathize with the bereaved husband and daughters. 3485 | Batavia NY Daily News - 4/28/1915 East Pembroke, April 28.-Hiram L. Bennett, a lifelong and highly re spected resident of this town, died at his home at 11 a. m. yesterday from heart trouble. He had been in declining health over a year, but had been able to be around most of the time until within a few weeks. He passed a comfortable night previous to his death and seemed brighter than usual in the morning. Mr. Bennett was a son of the late Henry and Jane Bennett and was born at Papermill on October 16, 1843. He served three years in the Civil War in the Eighth New York Heavy Artillery, In Captain E. TV Sherman's company. Soon after the war he married Miss Rosanna Lanning, who died a few years later. On November 25, 1874, he married Miss Mary Barlow, who died in 1889. On April 2, 1902, he married Mrs. Sarah Van Horn, who survives him, with- -two. daughters, Mrs. R. K. Peard of East Pembroke and Mrs. William Blair of Batavia; two sisters. Mrs Emery L. Day of East Pembroke and Mrs. Elvira Beckwlth of Batavia, and throe grandchildren, Leslie and Doris Peard of East Pembroke and Arthur Blair of Batavia, He was a man of fine character and happy disposition, ever interested in the welfare of the village and many friends will mourn his death. 3486 | Batavia NY Daily News - 5/10/1912 August William Benthin died at 1:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home on the Oakfield road about two miles northwest of Batavia. He had been in ill health about a week and yesterday suffered a stroke of paralysis which caused his death. Mr. Benthin was born in Carnzow, Germany, on February 9, 1845, and came to this country when ten years old. He had since been a resident of Niagara and Genesee counties. He was a member of the Stafford Benefit Association. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gustave _A,, of Oakfield and Frank C. Mrs. Brownell, who was 35 years of age, suffered a shock of paralysis three years ago last November and had never recovered from Jt. As a result of the paralysis her mind became affected arid it was necessary to take her to the' hospital. About a week ago the paralysis began to affect her throat and on Tuesday night an operation was performed, but It afforded her no relief. Prole farm in the town on Stafford, three miles east of Batavia on the main road. She had been in poor health for a number of years, but death was hastened by an apoplectic stroke on Thursday. Mrs. Bossart, whose maiden name was Anna M Dennis, wss born in Le Roy on March 29, 1852, and moved to Stafford when a young girl. She was married on December 10, 1888.
