3852 | Birth: Nov. 14, 1785 Hagerstown Washington County Maryland, USA Death: Sep. 14, 1859 Carroll County Missouri, USA The daughter of Abraham Houser, Sr. and Nancy Ann Rohrer, Barbry was born in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland just 2 years after the American Revolution. Barbry's father, Abraham Houser, was the son of Peter Houser. Her father was a Church of the Brethren (German Baptist) minister/elder and moved his family to Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1795. Barbry married Johannes "John" Wagaman on 29 Mar 1802 in Jessamine County, Kentucky when she was 16-years-old. Her father, Rev. Houser, performed the marriage ceremony. Her mother, Nancy Houser, died in Kentucky in 1813. Barbry and John were the parents of 14 children, all born in Jessamine County. In 1821, the Wagamans acquired 92 acres of land on Jessamine Creek from Barbry's dad, Abraham Houser. He died in Clermont County, Ohio in 1825. One of Barbry and John's daughters, Anna, left Kentucky and married her husband, Emanuel Hoover, in 1826 in Clermont County, Ohio. In 1830, 2 of Barbry and John's sons, Abraham and Solomon Wagaman, also left Jessamine County and resettled in Monroe County, Indiana. Barbry and John, along with most of their other children, followed them to Clear Creek Township in Monroe County in 1833. Barbry and John bought 80 acres of land in Clear Creek on 13 Dec 1833. They purchased more land there, and in Perry Township, from 1836 to 1843 bringing their total to 280 acres. A daughter, Alice Ann, married Abraham Franklin on 11 Feb 1847. He died soon after their marriage, and Alice returned to her parents' home by 1850. A young girl, Caroline Franklin, also lived with the family at that time; she may have been Alice's daughter or step-daughter. No more information is known about Alice. Eventually, some of the Barbry and John's children decided to move again and leave Indiana. Abraham, Solomon, David, Martha and John Wagaman headed west and settled in the northwestern part of Missouri. After her husband's death in 1852, Barbry joined several of her children and their families in Carroll County, Missouri. She died there in 1859 at the age of 73 years and 10 months. | HOUSER, Barbara (I182414)

3873 | Birth: Sep. 27, 1884 Cocke County Tennessee, USA Death: Apr. 11, 1931 Greeneville Greene County Tennessee, USA Although I was privileged to share a half century with my maternal grandparents, I never had the honor of knowing my paternal grandparents, Tom Bryant and Dollie Allen. (I do remember my step-grandfather, Campbell Gray, whom Dollie married after Tom died.) Only recently did I begin serious research on this side of my family, unfortunately after the passing of my father and his siblings robbed me of firsthand resources. I do have recollections of my father's references to his parents' death while he was still a boy. I've heard him and his sisters speak so enduringly of their mother. Dollie Allen (her name at birth was Frances Sophronia) was born in 1884 in the English Creek Community of Cocke County, Tenn., a daughter of Jim Allen and Matilda Finchum. She married Thomas Nelson Bryant, son of Ananias Bryant and Sarah Sisk. Tom and Dollie lived at the old Ananias Bryant home place, which was owned by Jim Breeden and his wife Cordelia Bryant, Tom's sister. Tom and Dollie had 8 children, all living into their 70s and 80s and one (Seattle) to 96., in contrast to their parents' early deaths. Tom died, age 46, of pneumonia. Dollie became a 41-year-old widow with 8 children, ages 2 (Ed) through 19 (Bart). Bart and Rene, 17, had already married and left home. Dollie and her younger children moved to the Eastport section of Newport. Two years after Tom's death, Dollie married Campbell Gray. They had a son, "Junior," who died before his 2nd birthday. Dollie had suffered from a chronic bowel disorder (possibly Crohn's Disease, which has afflicted other family members). After an extended illness and stay in a Greeneville hospital, she died at age 46. Rene and Viola, who were married when their mother died, took in their teenage sisters, Beulah, Seattle and Ann. Ed (8) and James (10) moved in with their older brother Bart and his wife, Hassie. Dollie's siblings included these sisters: Susan (Mrs. Sam Gregory), Kate (Mrs. Tom Bradley), Vade (Mrs. Eugene Corum) and Minnie (Mrs. Lewis Holt). Her brothers were Russell (half-brother), Alex and John. Dollie's obituary (inserted above in the column to the right) lists Jim Jr., who was in Oregon at the time of her death. ---Gene Bryant | ALLEN, Dollie (I180350)

3878 | Birth: Mar. 21, 1963 New York, USA Death: Mar. 30, 2000 New York, USA On Thursday March 30, 2000 Brenda lost her battle with melanoma skin cancer at age 37. Melanoma is the most serious cancer of the skin. According to the Melanoma Research Foundation in Lake Forest, CA, one human being dies every hour of every day of the year, in the United States, of melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma strikes people of all ages, all races, all economic levels and both sexes. It is already the most common cancer for women 25 to 29 and the second most common cancer for women 30 to 34. Melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. Children born today have a four to five times greater risk of developing melanoma in their lifetimes than their parents have. Brenda was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma in January 1995. She had a large mole on her back that turned black and began bleeding. It was removed with clear margins all the way around. Her lymph nodes were also clear. Due to the lack of knowledge of what melanoma skin cancer is all about, Brenda and her family were not overly concerned about her future. She made regular routine visits to her doctors and had several other moles removed that were non-malignant. Life went on as normal except Brenda now avoided the sun, wore large hats, sunscreen and more protective clothing. Still the seriousness of the cancer did not set in with the family as they continued to enjoy sun-filled activities. October 1999 would change all that. Brenda found a small lump that appeared on her back. It was the size of a marble and blue in color. She met with her surgeon who planned to remove the lump. Surgery was scheduled for November 23 and three more lumps appeared before the surgery. The results came back as malignant melanoma stage IV. It turns out that the blue was actually bleeding under the skin. Immediate cat scans were done which revealed the cancer had metastasized to her lungs, liver and brain. Brenda was given only "months" to live. She had chosen to take no treatments and felt she would rather spend her last few months having a better quality of life. She knew how sick interferon and radiation could make her and their rate of working was minimal at best. Good nutrition, a positive attitude toward healing and a strong faith were her treatments. On February 9th, 2000 Brenda returned for another cat scan. The results showed the brain tumor was increasing and she was given only a couple more weeks to live. The tumor grew quickly as it does with melanoma and Brenda passed away seven weeks later. Beth is sharing this story with you for several reasons. First, she wishes to honor the memory of her sister and also to pass along her sister's wish that others learn about melanoma. In addition, Beth lost a step-sister two months later to colon cancer, not to mention several family friends that also passed away that year. "Life is to short to not live it to it's fullest. Spend every day doing something you enjoy and tell the special people in your life how much they mean to you," sister Beth. | BRAWN, Brenda Leigh (I49979)
