Born Isobel Manley in Niagara Falls, Ont., she moved here in 1920 and attended city schools. She earned a nursing degree from the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center School of Nursing. She worked in the medical center's nursery for several years before joining the Visiting Nurses Association. Mrs. Greenwald was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church. Her husband of 42 years, Clarence W., a former city judge, died in 1974. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Scouler of Lexington, MA.; a son, James of Lilydale, MN; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. | 4002 | Buffalo News Robert L. Binns, Dedicated State Trooper, Athlete Robert I. Binns worked hard and played hard, whether he was on the job as a state trooper, bowling, playing baseball or poker, or riding his motorcycle. Family members weren't surprised that he served with the state police for 26 years. As a 15-year old growing up in Cheektowaga, he spotted some people stripping cars one day. So he called police - and chased the young hoodlums. With friends and family by his side in Erie County Medical Center, Mr. Binns died early Saturday of injuries suffered in an accident while riding his motorcycle in Cheektowaga the day before. The West Seneca resident was 52. Family members remembered Mr. Binns as a hard-working trooper, who didn't hesitate to volunteer for duty in New York City immediately after Sep 11. "He was the kind of person who would dare death in the face," said one of his nieces, Nadine Zygaj. "He would risk his own life to help someone else." Mr. Binns graduated from Bishop Turner High School, before earning degrees from Erie Community College and Buffalo State College. At ECC; he was an all-star baseball player. He joined the state police in the early 1980s, retiring in 2007 from his job in the state police at Boston barracks. An avid bowler, Mr. Binns had several 300 games and 700 series to his credit. He also played on numerous baseball and hockey teams, liked to hunt and enjoyed a good game of poker and backgammon. Family members also considered him a great storyteller, about anything from childhood hijinks to anecdotes from his days as a trooper. "The life of the party, he'd light up any room the minute he walked in," Zygaj said. Surviving are his daughter, Nicole; his mother, Emily; two sisters, Susan Bieger and Barbara Sparaga; and brother Leonard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday in St John Vianney Church, Southwestern Boulevard, Orchard Park, following a 10:15 a.m. prayer service in the James W. Born in Niagara Falls, he attended local schools. He served with the Marine Corps in the Korean War from 1952 to 1955. He worked as a laborer for the New York State Power Authority, the Stauffer Chemical Co. in Niagara Falls and Ayers-Witmer Lumber Co. in Buffalo. He was a keen sports fan, especially of baseball, and also enjoyed gardening and swimming. He was a former member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, both of Niagara Falls. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; a daughter, Terri of Buffalo; two brothers, Lewis F. of Youngstown and Arthur W. of Butler, Ohio; and a sister, Diane Havens of Niagara Falls. Mrs. Schaal and her husband owned and operated a farm in Wilson. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Wilson Town Board, where she served for 15 years. She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilson and the Gnostic Guild in Wilson. The body of Valerie Soos, 43, of 29 Riverside Avenue was discovered at about 2:30 pm outside Campbell's Pub at 1591 Niagara St., on the corner of Forest Avenue. Patrons on Sunday said she wasn't a regular at the bar, and her neighbors remembered her as a devoted housewife who often was seen working in the yard. "It's such a terrible thing," said a friend, Jan Nimo, wholives at 23 Riverside. "I can't get over it - seeing a person one day and the next day they're gone. It's devastating." Ms. Nimo said Mrs. Soos and her husband, Andrew, have two daughters, ages 8 and 15. Detectives spent several house at the Soos home and emerged with a garbage bag of items, which they took to Police Headquarters. They also searched a van parked outside the house. Today, investigators returned to the scene in search of more evidence, police officials said. *** Buffalo News - 11/5/1996 RING FINGER CUT OFF BODY OF CLAIM WOMAN The ring finger was cut off the body of a woman found dead behind a Niagara Street bar, police sources said Monday. That mutilation apparently occurred after the death of Valerie Soos, 43, of Riverside Avenue, sources said, citing the lack of blood flow from the wound. Mrs. Soos' body was found Sunday afternoon in her car behind Campbell's Pub at 1591 Niagara St. An autopsy was performed Monday by the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office, Homicide Bureau officials declined to comment on the results. Andrew Soos had reported his wife missing approximately 14 hours before her body was found. He had given police a detailed description of her clothing and the car and noted that she may have been carrying several hundred dollars. Police sources said the body was entirely nude when it was discovered at about 2:30 pm Sunday. The victim's husband has been questioned by police, as is customary, and the couple's home was searched. The couple has two daughters, ages 8 and 15, according to a neighbor. *** Buffalo News - 11/6/1996 HOME FILLED WITH TROPHIES IS MONUMENT TO SLAIN MOTHER'S DEVOTION TO HER CHILDREN Valerie Soos helped her two daughters dance their way to the top in studio competitions/ The Soos family home on Riverside Avenue is filled with trophies that now stand as monuments to the 43-year-old mother's devotion to her children, Agela, 8, and Tamara, 15, family and friends said Tuesday. Few details have been made public no how the Riverside woman met a violent end this past weekend. Homecide investigators Tuesday continued searching for suspects. What is known is that Mrs. Soos left her home for the last time around midnight Saturday to purchase food items from an area supermarket for Sunday breakfast, acquaintances and reltives said in interviews. When her husband, Andy Soos, awoke later that morning and discovered his wife was not home, he called her sister, Vanessa J. Bichler, at about 8:30 am, seeking assistance, the sister said. Mrs. Bichler, of Grand Island, picked up their brother, James Riexinger, from his home in Riverside, and headed to their brother-in-law's home and together they filed a missing person's report with Hertel Station police. As word spread that the well-liked woman had disappeared, a search party was formed and area neighborhoods were scoured. At about 2:30 pm Sunday, Mrs. Soos' station wagon was located behind a Niagara Street bar. "The car was found by the dance teacher from the dance studio where Valerie's daughter Angela took dance lessons. Calerie was close friends with the teacher and would help her out answering phones at night at the studio," Mrs. Bichler said. The dance teacher, who had called Mrs. Bichler at Mrs. Soos' home at alert her she had found the car, also contacted police to say the vehicle had been located, the sister said. "When my brother Jim and I went to where the car was, we were told no one should go near the car until police arrives. "I didn't think Valerie was in the car. I just thought someone stole her car," Mrs. Bichler said. That assumption would soon change. Police inspected the station wagon and found Mrs. Soos' naked body in it. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that her ring finger had been severed, according to police sources. But, Capt. Joseph Riga, chief of the homicide Bureau, refused to discuss any details fo the case Tuesday, for fear it might hamper the arrest of those responsible. "My sister called herself a big welcome mat. She was a good person and there was nothing she wouldn't do for anayone," said Mrs. Bichler, who with Mrs. Soos worked together cleaning homes. The lack of information on the slaying, including Mrs. Soos' cause of death, weighs heavily on family members, according to relatives and friends. "No one wants to go on and not know what happened. Mrs. Walck was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and a Bible class. She organized the church library in 1962. She dabbled in writing Christian music and also enjoyed reading and traveling. Her husband, Hubert Walck, died in 1990. Surviving are a son, Lester of Sanborn; a sister, Josephine Stange of North Tonawanda; a grandson; and three great-grandchildren. Born May 21, 1921 in South Buffalo, NY, Joe was the third of four children born to Viola (Nelson) Kohler and Joseph J. Kohler Sr. A kind, self-disciplined, hard-working, athletic, joyful, mischievous and romantic man, he had a sparkle in his eye and an easy laugh. He adored his wife of 65 years, Billie (Rathwell) Kohler, their children Joe III and Kim (James) Kohler-Lovejoy. A WWII hero, serving in the Army Air Corps, Joe and his tugboat, "Cheerio Joe" were featured in The Stars and Stripes News in May of 1944. He and his tug also took part in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, towing in and helping build the Mulberry landing docks, later saving the lives of his crew. Post-war, Joe and Billie resided and raised their family in Orchard Park, NY where they designed, built, decorated and sold hundreds of luxury homes; "Kohler Homes" were synonymous with meticulous construction, leading edge amenities and personalized touches. Joe was a longtime member of the Masonic Fraternity where he was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. Retiring to Canandaigua, NY he and Billie enjoyed their summers swimming in the magical waters of the Lake. Winters, along with son Joe III, they had the great fortune to reside in the Bahamas, where they swam, snorkeled and walked the beach by day and danced their nights away under the stars. Always good-natured, his last days were enjoyed at home with his family; son Joe played old standards on the piano while the family "named that tune"; Joe knew all the words and sang along with a smile. He received a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University, where he was president of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, and a member of the Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi, and the Chemical Engineering Honor Society, Omega Chi Epsilon. Mr. Beutel earned an MBA from Harvard University. He and his wife, Kara, moved to Buffalo in 1992 when he joined Outokumpu American Brass as a marketing manager. January 30, 2011, Eleanor Fay Greatbatch; wife of implantable pacemaker inventor Wilson Greatbatch, died in Oxford Village at Canterbury Woods, Williamsville, NY; she was 90. Eleanor Fay Wright was born on Buffalo's Niagara St., and spent her early childhood in downtown Buffalo and West Seneca. Her father died unexpectedly in 1931 when she was 11; the family later moved to Akron where Mrs. Greatbatch graduated from Akron Central High. She attended Buffalo State College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1942. She met Wilson Greatbatch and they married January 1, 1945. Eleanor's strength, resourcefulness and sense of humor were a significant asset in support of Wilson's work throughout his entrepreneurial career. Mrs. Greatbatch was an active member and Elder of the First United Presbyterian Church of Clarence. She loved participating in Presbyterian Woman and led a Bible study for her Circle for many years. Mrs. Greatbatch worked in the Clarence Public School System as a library aide serving for 31 years, most of those in the Clarence Center Elementary School. Mrs. Greatbatch also was a long-time member of the League of Women Voters. She served on the board of directors of Wilson Greatbatch Ltd. from 1970-1979 and then again from 1990-1997. She co established the East Hill Foundation and served on its board as well as on the board of the Eleanor and Wilson Foundation. A lover of orchestral and choral music; she enthusiastically supported the concerts of the Clarence Concert Association. Mrs. Greatbatch loved cooking and baking and was an avid reader of nonfiction and classical literature. She was an expert seamstress making all her own clothes, and later became an accomplished weaver. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Wilson; three sons, Warren, John, Ken, and a daughter, Anne Maciariello. Her youngest son Peter died in 1998. Grandchildren include: Marcy Martin, Ericka Chadbourne, Jennifer Chojecki, Emily Greatbatch, Cody Greatbatch, Ricky Greatbatch, Ken Dulian, Jenny Pierce, Larry Maciariello Jr., Jim Maciariello, Kameron Brown, and Russell Lanter II; Great Grandchildren include: Taylor Greatbatch, Elizabeth Chadbourne, and Noah Roshong. Roemer, age 66, of Lewiston, NY, went to her heavenly home on August 29, 2008 at Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, after a long illness. Linda was born October 13, 1941 in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of the late Milton and Elizabeth (Schneider) Bradshaw.She attended the Lewiston Red Brick School, St. Peter's RC School, and graduated from Stella Niagara High School in 1959. She married Walter E. Roemer on December 26, 1959 at St. Peter's RC Church in Lewiston. Walter predeceased her in 2006. At various times, Linda worked in her family's business, Schneider's Restaurant, in Lewiston. She also worked at McDonald's in Lewiston, and for 20 years, was employed by the New York State Parks, retiring in 2000. Linda enjoyed spending time with her family, especially summer vacations at Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada. She also enjoyed playing bingo and watching sports (the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and Buffalo Sabres), classic movies and Jeopardy.Linda is survived by two sons, Michael (Jean) Roemer of Youngstown and LTC Patrick (Cyndi) Roemer, NYANG of Lewiston; four daughters, Elizabeth Roemer of Irondequoit, Megan Roemer of Lewiston, Mary Kate Roemer and Bridget Roemer, both of Ft. He was a member of the board of directors of the Riverside Credit Union and chairman of the New York State Credit Union Marketing League. He recently was inducted into the league's Hall of Fame. Mr. Farnan was a former member of the Starpoint Board of Education and had been a golf instructor at several schools in the district. He was the first president of the Tan-Tara Country Club and a former treasurer of the Lockport Old Guard. His wife, the former Catherine Bonsall, died in 2000. Loeschke, a longtime member of the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company and a retired employee of National Grinding Wheel, died Wednesday in his home after a long illness. He was 77. The Bergholz native attended local schools and was a life member of St. James Evangelical Church. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 and was a member of Post No. 1, American Legion. Mr. Loeschke worked for National Grinding Wheel in Niagara Falls for 40 years. He served in the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company for 55 years and was an exempt member. He was a lifetime member of the New York State Firemen's Association. Mr. Loeschke was active in the Wheatfield Democratic Party for 20 years. He and his wife of 54 years, the former Dorothy Thomas, enjoyed spending summers at their cottage in Cape Vincent and winters in Tampa, Fla. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and hunting. In addition to his wife, Mr. Loeschke is survived by a son, William E. of Wilson; two daughters, Judy Ann Seebauer of Grand Island and Kathleen Roman of Bergholz; four sisters, Alice Schultz of Wheatfield, Helen Roberts and Ruth Haseley, both of Bergholz, and Norma Scherrer of Niagara Falls; and five grandchildren. "Buff" Buffone, a retired beer salesman who served in the Marines just after World War II, died Sunday in his home. He was 78. Born on March 9, 1928 in Niagara Falls, he was the son of late Pasquale and Clara (Sdao) Buffone. On July 25, 1969, he married Rosalie D. (LaBarber) Buffone in Lewiston, New York. Mr. Buffone was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. He served in the Marine Corps from January 10, 1946 until his honorable discharge on October 24, 1947. Mr. Buffone worked at various factories in Niagara Falls until he became a beer salesman, his career for 38 years. He worked for Iroquois Distributors in Niagara Falls and then became the warehouse manager of Gorge Distributors in Niagara Falls. He retired from Try-It North Distributors in Sanborn in 1990. Mr. Buffone was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a member of the Teamsters and Nick's Como Gourmet Club in Niagara Falls. In addition to his wife of 37 years, he is survived by two sons, Bruce Campbell of Jacksonville, FL and Mark Campbell of Fairfield, CT; one brother, Frank (late June) Buffone of Niagara Falls, NY; and two sisters, Frances Buffone of Niagara Falls, NY and Margaret (Nash) Ognibene of the Town of Niagara, NY; his brother-in-law, Lawrence (Sarah) LaBarber of Niagara Falls, NY; and two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
