The former Edith L'Hommedieu lived in Kenmore for more than 50 years before she moved to Sanborn. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Niagara Falls, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Her husband, Harold E. Sr., died in 1963. 4202 | Buffalo News, The (NY) - March 17, 2002 Harold Marcks, 82, who worked as a dairy farmer for 35 years, died Saturday (March 16, 2002) in Ladder Road Nursing Home, Rochester, after a brief illness. He was born in Wolcottsville, where he attended school. In 1935, he married Clara A. Bishing. She died in 1993. He lived in Wilson from 1940 until 1995, when he moved to Rochester to live with his daughter. He was a resident of the nursing home for about a year. Marcks was president and a director of Niagara County Milk Producers. He was a member of the Niagara County Extension Service and received the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to agriculture in the community. He also sold Hoffman Seeds for 50 years and received many sales awards. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilson and president of the church council. Survivors include two daughters, Mona Baker of Rochester and Marlene Schotz of Wilson, and six grandchildren. Hassan, 81, a homemaker who worked in her family's grocery store for many years, died Thursday (March 13, 2003) in her Grand Island home after a long illness. Born Helen Grobengieser in Niagara Falls, she worked in the family grocery store for many years after graduating from Niagara Falls High School in 1940 with top honors. Grobengieser & Sons, the family store, was located on 18th Street and South Avenue in Niagara Falls for 65 years. A homemaker for most of her life, she was a lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, gardening and trips to the family cabin in Canisteo. Her husband, Daniel, died in 1979. She is survived by three sons, Robert of Crossville, TN., James of Wolcott and Mark of Grand Island; a brother, Edward Grobengieser of Niagara Falls; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Wendt was a native of Sanborn. He worked for a time for the Wurlitzer Plant in North Tonawanda and the Carborundum Co. in Niagara Falls. Wendt then became an agent with the Nationwide Insurance Co. and retired in 1980 after 30 years. He was an active member of St. Andrew's Church in Pekin, serving as an elder, a trustee and as a member of the Lutheran Layman's League. His wife, the former Hilda F. Haseley, died in 1981. Wendt is survived by three sons, Edward J. of North Tonawanda; Frank P. and David N.; two daughters, Elizabeth C. LaRock and Judy E. He was born in Wheatfield, lived there all of his life and was a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church. Stoelting was an exempt member of Bergholz Fire Company. He also volunteered for many years with Tri-Community Ambulance Service. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and had been a member of the Bergholz Fire Company Band in the 1930s and '40s. Stoelting worked on his family's dairy farm until 1948, when he went to work at American District Steam Co. in Buffalo. He retired in 1972. She and her husband worked on the family farm, selling their produce at Buffalo's Clinton-Bailey market. Stieg, 85, a well-known musician who played several instruments and directed many bands, died Friday (March 23, 2001) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, after a long illness. Born in Wheatfield, he was an Army veteran of World War II and played in the 174th Infantry Army Band. He played several instruments and for 35 years directed many bands, including the Bergholz German Band, the Sanborn Volunteer Fire Company Band, the Wheatfield Community Band and the Wheatfield Senior Citizens Band. On several occasions he traveled with his bands to Germany, Hawaii, California and Florida. He was a 50-year member of Adams Fire Company and was a member of Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, and St. John Lutheran Church. His wife, the former Verna Wollenberg, died in 1995. Duwe, a North Tonawanda native and a Lutheran minister for 72 years, died Friday (May 3, 1996) in Timken Mercy Medical Center, Canton, OH, after a brief illness. Mr. Duwe, 93, retired in 1967 in Ohio but returned to North Tonawanda for several years and served as interim pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sanborn, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, North Tonawanda. He also served at other churches as needed. He was ordained in the former American Lutheran Church, which later merged into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, after graduating from the former Martin Luther Seminary in Buffalo. Early in his ministry, Mr. Duwe served at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ridgeway, Ont., and Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Webster. In Ohio, he served for 19 years as pastor of Grace Lutheran in East Palestine and St. Luke's in Petersburg. He was pastor of Euclid Lutheran Church in Euclid for 18 years. He is survived by two sons, Herbert C. of Negley, OH, and Gordon E. of Richmond Heights, OH; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1 P.M. 4246 | Buffalo News, The (NY) - November 6, 1996 Walter A. Wienke, 92, of Jagow Road, a Sanborn farmer and businessman, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 1996) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston. Born in Sanborn, Wienke lived there most of his life. He married Frances Ferchen in 1930, and they moved to Ward Road. Twenty-five years later, they built a home on Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn, where he operated the 60-acre Wienke Farm with his bother, Clarence. A pond on the farm allowed the brothers to irrigate all their fruit and vegetable crops, which were highly regarded in the area. In 1936, the brothers started a greenhouse business, growing flowers and vegetable plants for nurseries. Wienke was a spokesman for the Market Growers Co-Op and is credited with helping save the Niagara Falls Farmers Market from closing in 1963. In his younger days, Wienke played the sousaphone in the well-known Gombert Band. He was a member of Abiding Saviour Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. He was a former member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls, where he served on the vestry as trustee and president. He was an exempt member of Sanborn Volunteer Fire Company and a member of the Niagara County Extension Service. His wife died in 1994. Wienke is survived by a son, Glenn L. of Sanborn; a sister, Hilda Ferchen of Tucson, AZ.; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. 4247 | Buffalo News, The (NY) - October 10, 2004 DEC. 28, 1929 -- OCT. 7, 2004 Donald W. Doebler, a co-founder of Recreational Warehouse, died Thursday at home in Mount Dora, Fla. He was 74. The North Tonawanda native was a summer resident of Wellesley Island in the Thousand Islands. He served with the Army during the Korean War. He was a co-founder of Recreational Warehouse on River Road in North Tonawanda, which he co-owned from 1973 to 1984. Mr. Doebler then founded Leisure Bay Industries in Orlando, Fla., which he was still operating. He relocated to Florida in 1980. He was a member of the Clayton Yacht Club, a trustee of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton and was past president of the Thousand Islands Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. Mr. Doebler was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Eustis, Fla., and attended the Church of the Redeemer in Rockport, Ont., in the summer and was a former member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, the former Virginia Green; a daughter, Laura D. Tully of Knoxville, TN.; a son, David R. of Orlando; a brother, Gary H. of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:15 A.M. Interment will be in Wheatfield Cemetery. Mrs. Human, 84, died Tuesday (Oct. 9, 2001) at her residence. The former Helen Broeker was born in Wheatfield and was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, North Tonawanda. She was a homemaker for most of her life and worked for a few years in the office at her husband's company, the former Human Coal & Builders Supply Co. at Saunders Settlement and Shawnee roads. Born in the Town of Niagara to Hubert and Esther (DeVantier) Haseley, he was a lifelong resident of the town, where he operated his father's family farm. He also worked in the family trucking business. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Brethren Church in North Tonawanda where he was an elder. Haseley loved hunting, gardening and family life. He is survived by his wife, Lois (Frerichs) Haseley; four daughters, Connie Britton of Ransomville, Carol Fura of Cambria, and Jean Kvamme and Kari Haseley, both of the Town of Niagara; four sons, Loren Haseley, Larry Haseley, Timothy Haseley and Lloyd Haseley, all of the Town of Niagara; a brother, Raymond Haseley of the Town of Niagara; two sisters, Elverna Catlin and Doris Davis, both of the Town of Niagara; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Weigand, 93, a charter member of the Bergholz Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 2003) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a lengthy illness. Born Hazel Voelker in Wheatfield, she attended St. James Lutheran School. Mrs. Weigand was a lifelong member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bergholz, where she was a member of the Women of the Church and the quilting group. She was a member of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Association Auxiliary and the Fire Association of the State of New York Auxiliary. Mrs. Weigand worked as a laborer at Shredded Wheat, Niagara Falls, and at Carborundum Co. She and her husband, Adolph, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. He died in 1986. Survivors include two sons, John of Bergholz and Todd of Sanborn; a daughter, Margo Nye of Bergholz; a brother, Kenneth Voelker of Niagara Falls; a sister, Audrey Haseley of Shallotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
