4251 | Buffalo News, The (NY) - October 15, 1999 HAROLD SCHMIDT, CONRAIL ENGINEER, CONSTRUCTION WORKER, SOFTBALL COACH Harold "Smitty" Schmidt, 66, who was an engineer with Conrail from 1964 to 1995, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, after a brief illness. Schmidt, also known as "Hans," was born in Wheatfield and was a graduate of Trott Vocational High School, Niagara Falls. He was a softball coach with the Cub Scouts and a catcher for the St. James Lutheran Church team in his younger days. A member of the Operating Engineers union, he worked on the construction of Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston; the Grand Island Bridges; and the Niagara Power Project, Lewiston. In addition, he was a co-owner of the former Bergholz Garage. A lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, he held various positions, including representative of the finance committee and an elder. He also was a charter member of the Wheatfield Business Association. Schmidt enjoyed fishing, bowling and euchre. A lifelong resident of Wheatfield, he also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. His first wife, Jeanette Blaise Schmidt, died in 1975. Survivors include his second wife, the former D. Jean VanNorman; three sons, Lawrence of Fayetteville, Ga., Charles and Dennis; a daughter, Katherine Harrison of Aurora, Colo.; a stepson, Scott Nestler of Los Angeles; a stepdaughter, Lori Nestler of Amherst; two sisters, Hilda Jensen of North Tonawanda and Lavina Moll; and 10 grandchildren. Nye, 42, a quality-control inspector at Nuttall Gear, Wheatfield, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) in his Niagara Falls home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Niagara Falls and was a former resident of Bergholz. After his graduation from Niagara-Wheatfield High School, Nye worked in several machine shops before working at Nuttall Gear. Nye became the quality-control inspector after working there for 15 years. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Bergholz, and enjoyed coffee, pets, racing at the Ransomville Speedway and fishing. In addition, he liked to hunt, do home improvements, travel and help those in need. Nye married the former Arlene J.M. Hill in 1993. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, David Smith of Niagara Falls and Jordan Smith of the Tuscarora Indian Reservation; two daughters, Tia F. He was born in Sanborn and lived in Niagara Falls for most of his life. Williams also worked for Acheson Graphite Co. before working 14 years for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. He also worked for 10 years in the City of Niagara Falls parking meter department. He worked at Bell for 15 years before retiring in 1971. Born Betty Milotta in Mount Pleasant, Pa., she was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in food service management. She had lived in Lewiston since 1957. She began her career at the Army Air Forces Base in Dayton, OH. She retired from E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in Niagara Falls. Prior to that, she worked at Moore Business Forms, Niagara Falls; Bell Aircraft, Wheatfield; Magnolia Terrace Restaurant in J.N. Adam Department Store, Buffalo; and Cease Commissary Co. at Fredonia State College. Mrs. Jagow helped establish the Lewiston-Porter school lunch program. She was a founding member of Lutheran Church of the Escarpment, where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school for 40 years. She was also active with Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Jagow was a member of the Professional Women's Association and Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She enjoyed bowling, golf, gardening and attending plays at Niagara University. Samuel Burkhardt, 66, who was superintendent of highways, parks and streets for the City of Lockport from 1985 to 1999, died Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) in St. James Mercy Health Hospital, Hornell, after apparently suffering a heart attack. He had been preparing to go hunting with relatives at his cabin in Scio. Burkhardt was born in Rapids and attended local schools. He started his career with the city as a recreation leader on a seasonal basis in 1953. After high school, in 1956, he worked full time with the city, first as a sanitation worker, then as a heavy-equipment operator. From 1971 to 1985, he was a foreman. He then became superintendent of highways, parks and streets. Burkhardt held a great passion for sports. He was honored by the Western New York Basketball Officials Association board for his service from 1963 to 1988. He was inducted into the Niagara Falls Umpires Association Hall of Fame in 1990. Burkhardt was a golfer and a member of Lockport Town and Country Club. He was also a member of QUAD, one of the oldest ongoing international golf tournaments. He shot a hole-in-one May 16 at Niagara Orleans Country Club, Royalton. Pfohl was a member of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service, Niagara County Farm Bureau, and had served on the Agricultural Districting Advisory Committee. In addition, he was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he served as trustee and on various project committees. He played trumpet with bands, including the Bergholz German Band, with whom he traveled with to Europe, Canada and through the U.S. Pfohl enjoyed cars, and often was seen driving his 1948 General Motors Corporation truck around town, as well as in parades. His wife, the former Edna Schimschack, died in 1993. He was born in Niagara Falls and lived here until entering the military in 1945. Haseley served in the Navy from 1945 to 1949, including the last days of World War II, and from 1950 to 1953, during the Korean War. In 1954, he moved to Seattle, where he worked for Clough Equipment as a sheet metal engineer and then, in 1968, was transferred to Sacramento, Calif. He retired in 1990, after 36 years with the company, and, in 1991, moved to Tillamook, Ore. He previously worked for Moore Business Forms in Niagara Falls for several years, training as a pressman. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Sacramento and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Walck, 68, of North Tonawanda, a World War II veteran and retired Niagara County mental health director, died Friday (Sept. 10, 1993) in Buffalo General Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Niagara Falls and was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School. He served in the Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Walck graduated from Niagara University in 1950 and received his master's degree in social work from the University of Buffalo in 1952. He worked for Family and Children's Services in Niagara Falls before becoming a clinical social worker for the county. He was promoted to director of adult day treatment and then director of mental health. He was made the permanent director in 1974. He retired in 1987 after 31 years of service. Born in Sanborn, he attended Trott Vocational High School in Niagara Falls. Beutel served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He was stationed in Germany and achieved the rank of corporal before his discharge. Before and after his military service, he worked in the family business, William Beutel and Sons, a well drilling business. He worked there until 1964 when he went to work at the General Motors Chevrolet Engine Plant in the Town of Tonawanda. He worked there for 33 years as a repairman, retiring in 1997. In 1964, he married Patricia Ann Hickey. They settled in Tonawanda, where they were members of St. Amelia's Roman Catholic Church. Beutel was active in the parish's annual Catholic Charities Drive and was a past treasurer of the Tonawanda Boy Scout Troop 229. He also was a member of the Western New York Gas and Steam Engine Association; the Western New York Two-Cylinder Club, the Western New York Railway Historical Society; and the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. He was 77. Williams was born in Lockport and lived most of his life here and in New York City. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he graduated from Princeton University in 1947. He began his career in retailing at B. Altman & Co. in New York City, where he met and married Joan P. Pettit. Upon his return to Lockport in 1949, he and his father, Robert, acquired Williams Brothers County, the family department store on Main Street founded in 1868. Williams served as president of the company until 1974, when the store closed. He was active in civic affairs and organizations in Lockport, serving as president of the Eastern Niagara Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. In 1971, Williams was elected president of the National Retail Merchants Association in New York City. He served in that office until 1990. During his tenure, he was successful in expanding the association's membership nationally and internationally. He presided over major retailing world conferences in London, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Sydney and over the association's annual conventions in New York City. Williams testified frequently on behalf of the retail industry before committees of Congress. He was also active in the development of the Princeton University campus store. She opened Snowflake Ski Shop in Lockport in 1968 and ran it until she retired in 1989. The shop is currently operated by her children. An accomplished downhill skier and a golfer and a world traveler, Mrs. Wray lived in Germany for two years. She spent her winters in Florida, returning to Ellicottville to ski, and her summers in Saranac Lake. 4291 | Buffalo NY Courier Express - 8/28/1948 George L. Buchwald. 64, of 112 Lisbon Ave., a member of the Police Department 25 years when he retired because of ill health in 1940 died yesterday. Bora at Lakeview, Mr. Buchwald Joined the police in 1915 and was assigned through most of his service to the Central Park Station. He was promoted to acting detective several years after his appointment and four years prior to his retirement he was active in the motorcycle squad. fie was an honorary member of the Erie Club and member of the Police & Benevolent Association. Surviving are his wife, Juana Buchwald: three sons. Arthur A., Berlin Heights, O., George C. of DeUure, Wilmington, Del., and Edwin J, Buffalo; two daughters, Mrs. Clayton Schrober and Mrs. Helen Wood; two sisters, Mrs. John Hillman. 4292 | Buffalo NY Courier - 1/12/1894 Ferdinand Berndt, aged 58 years, died his home at 3:45 o'clock this morning. He is survived by a wife and eight children. The funeral services will be held Monday. The deceased was the father of Ernest Berndt, who was recently arrested in Chicago as an accomplice of Goerke in the incendiary fire cases of the East vear. and who is expected to arrive ome"to-morrow. It is the prevailing opinion that the young man's disgrace is the cause of the father's death, but this is denied by the family, who attribute the cause to heart disease. Berndt was apparently in good health yesterday and was on the streets as usual. His death was unexpected. He was a shoemaker and had lived in North Tonawanda 14 years. Buerger, 73 years old retired head of the wholesale hosiery and knit goods company which bears his name and the name of his son, Theo- odore E. Buerger, will be held at 2 p. m tomorrow at his home, 155 Northampton Street, and a half hour later at Emmaus Lutheran Church. Mr. Buerger died Tuesday at his home after a short illness. Mr. Buerger was a former eastern representative of the Milwaukee Germania, a newspaper. He was born in 1863 in Wolcottsville. After his family moved to Buffalo, he at- tended public schools here and later was graduated from Bryant & Strat- ton's Business College. After com- pleting a business course, Mr. Buer- ger obtained a post in a downtown dry goods store. In later years, he became a partner of John A. Kessel and formed the Kessel & Buerger Company, retail notions dealers. He and his son organized their own business in 1915 under the name it bears today. Mr. Buerger retired five year ago. Long a member of the church in which his funeral rite will be held Mr.. Buerger, for twenty years, had served as trustee and treasurer of the congregation. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Frances Boettcher Buer- ger; a daughter, Laura H.
