On "Death Curve"
The wrecked car,, No. 21.,, with thirty-
six passengers, all on their way to work
at the Gould Coupler plant and; the
New York Car Wheel works in Depew,
left the city limits at Genesee street
at 6:20 o'clock.
The car reached the curve. a thirty-
degree turn,'-twenty minutes later;wlth
i t s brakes set and power off, according
to the motorman. The company had
issued rues for all motormen to sow
down and have their power under con-
trol at this curve, considered most dan-
gerous of all points on the line.
But the rails were sippery and the
car left them, the body parting fro
the trucks. The trucks remained up-
right beside the car line.
The car body got momentum from
the raised tracks, which are three feet
above ground level at this particular
curve,, ad went whirling into two tele-
grap hpoles fifty feet away. Both were
snapped off clean and a sub support-
ing pole spintered.
The otorman, Michael Mucha, was
still in his vestibule when the car
smashed into the teleraph oles and
his escape is considered miraculous.
He received mminor injuries to his right
hand and forehead while the conduc-
tor,, Leo Siwinski, was injured in the
left hip and left leg. Both live in De-
pew. There is a danger ight at the
curve, wich ordinarily can be seen at
a distance, but the heavy fog made it
indistinct
Dr. R.L.Stratton of Depew was
quickly on the scene of the accident.
He gave the men first aid. A second
trolley car arrived a few minutes later.
The wunded men were put in this and
taken to the ciity line where the am-
bulances had been summoned.
The three victims were horribly
crushed beneath a heap of wreckage.
When the bodies of Smith and
Brunner were removed from beneath
the debris with the aid of jacks, life
was extinct. They were sent to the
morgue by Deputy Medical Examiner
Cook.
The second trolley car, in which the
wounded were taken to the hospitals
and home, was in chare of J. Mc
Nichols,, motorman, and Albert Martin,
conductor. Both ive in Depew. Traf-
fic was tied up for three hours.
Superintendent's Statement
The general supintendent of the
Buffalo & Depew can find no reason
for the disaster. The company will
make a thorough investigation, he says..
"It looks llike one of those deviish
mishaps which one sometimes meets
in forty-six years of railroading," he
stated last night.
"We instruct all our men to slow
down when they go down grade or make
a sharp turn. All signs show that
Mucha did this.
"The track was in excellent condi-
tion at this point. It was brought upp
to the mark with new ballast last
summer
"The car trucks of No. 21 were in
first class shape. A New York public
service commission expert examined
track and trucks today and seemed
satisfied that the disaster was due to
neither.
"The only mark on the trucks after
the accident was one broken casting.
Contact with the frozen ground after
the wreck snapped it.
"Mucha is a highlly efficient man and
temperate. He slept in our car barn
last night. I frequently rode on his
car and found him invarably a man
in perfect control of his car. Our in-
structions specifically state that mo-
tormen must slow down at down grades
and have their car under the most
perfect control. An examination of the
motor after the accident showed that
Mucha had the brakes set."

The alleged escapades of Wilbur G.
Bodamer, who is being sued by Isabella
M. Bodamer for absolute divorce
on the allegation that he ran away to
Boston, Mass., with a woman by the
name of Williams, were exploited in
special term of supreme court yesterday
afternoon, when an application
was made for counsel fees and alimony
during the pendency of the case. Judge
Wheeler, before whom the motion was
made, allowed the woman $30 counsel
fees and $3 a week alimony.
Bodamer is alleged to have eloped
with the Williams woman while employed
as a taxlcab driver. His wife
avers that he became acquainted with
the co-respondent while working
nights.
The couple were married eight years
ago and lived happily, it is claimed,
until about two months ago when the
alleged misconduct on the part of Bodamer
was discovered by his wife.
The papers filed with the county clerk
yesterday afternoon set up the claim
that Bodamer returned to the cityafter
his trip to Boston and obtained
employment with a taxicab company,
which paid him $12.50 a week and tips.
Bodamer has entered a general denial
of the allegations contained in
the summons and complaint and will
contest the action.
It is said that an effort was made to
settle the differences of the couple
out of court by a compromise, but it
proved unsuccessful.
Neither party to the action, it is
believed, objects strongly to the granting
of the decree of divorce, but the
question of alimony and counsel fees
could not be settled to the satisfaction
of both people.
The case will be tried at the next
term of equity court. Mrs. Bodamer
alleges that her husband is worth $2,-
000 and has a quarter interest in a
motor boat.

Mrs. Elizabeth Bodamer cut her throat
with a razor about 5:30 o'clock yesterday
afternoon at her home, No. 14 George
Street.
She was alone in the house at the time,
and when her husband returned from his
work at 6 o'clock he found the body lying
in a pool of blood on the floor in a rear
room, with the raaor tightly clutched in
the right hand. The body was warm, and
Dr. Clement was summoned, but he found
that the flame of life had gone Out.
Mrs. Bodamer was 64 years did, and although
she acted strangely at times, her
sad death was a terrible blow to her hus-
band and family. When her daughter left
home yesterday morning Mrs. Bbdamer appeared
to be in a most cheerful mood. Besides

sons, two daughters, and three stcp-daughters.

Ervin J. Borth, dean of Buffalo's
vocational teachers, collapsed
and died about 1 yesterday
afternoon in a classroom at
McKinley Vocational High School.
He was 69.
Mr. Borth w»s stricken a few
minutes after the start of his
class in basic metal work. He had
just risen from his .desk to
demonstrate the use of a lathe
for his students when he fell to
the floor. A student summoned
aid.
When members of Fire Rescue
Squad failed to revive him, Mr.
Borth was pronounced dead by a
physician from Kenmore Mercy
Hospital.
Mr. Borth was planning to
retire at the close of the school
year after teaching at McKinley
and the old Black Rock Vocational
High School for 36 years.
Fellow teachers characterized
him »s a man who worked unstintingly
for the good of his students.
"He always thought it was
his job to make good citizens as
well as good craftsmen," one faculty
member said.
During school vacation periods
he often worked in local plants,
and one of his greatest joys was
meeting a former student on the
job. "It really gave him a thrill
when he saw one of his 'boys'
working and doing a good job," a
friend said.
Mr, Borth entered the teaching
profession only after lengthy consideration
and a decision that he
wanted to devote his life to youth.
He had studied four years at the
University of Buffalo and was
about to receive his degree as a
dentist when he changed his mind
and became a teacher.
Born in Buffalo, he attended
Public School 48, Masten Park
High School, UB and the old
State Normal School.
Mr. Borth joined the faculty
at McKinley the day the school
was opening in September,
1923. Since that day he never
taught at another school.
He taught science and mathematics
classes at McKinley before
specializing in machine shop instruction.
As an added duty, he
served as the school's certified
Red Cross instructor, teaching
students first-aid methods.
His enthusiasm for teaching
was imbued in his daughter, Miss
Audrey Borth, who is now an
English instructor at the Laboratory
School of the University of
Chicago.
An avid gardener, Mr. Borth
took just pride In his huge rose
garden adjacent to his home at
460 Winspear Ave. He also devoted
his leisure time to fishing
in Lake Ontario, near Wilson.
He was a member of St.
Aloysius Gonzaga Church, the
Buffalo Teachers Federation,
the Schoolmasters Assn. and the
New York State Teachers Assn.
Only two weeks ago he was
among a group of retiring teach-
ers honored at a banquet of the
Schoolmasters group. Earlier this
year, students and faculty sponsored
an "Erv Borth Night" In
his honor.
Besides his daughter, he is survived
by his wife, the former
Alice Haggerty, and a sister, Mrs.
Emma Milsap. Funeral arrangements
are incomplete.
