Born in Falkirk, Scotland, he came to Niagara /Falls 66 years ago and was employed by International Paper Mill for 40 years before retiring. An avid sportsman, he played basketball, baseball and also bowled. He played basketball for the Tigers and once played under the three-star player Johnny Moore. Cruickshank was a member of the American Legion LaSalle Post 1142, the Moose Club and Golden Agers and former member of MacKenzie Club. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Yakam Cruickshank; a daughter, Mrs. David (Bernadette) Wolf of Danbury, Conn.; brother, George Cruickshank of Niagara Falls; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Rissler of Lantana, Fla.; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 5202 | Charles D. "Chuck" Held, age 94 of Wilson, died February 16, 2021. He was the son of the late Edgar and Ada Schaeffer Held. He was a veteran of WW II and a retiree of the Coated Abrasives Division of the Carborundum Company in Wheatfield. He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley Rohring Held. 5203 | Charles E. 'Chuck' Ellsmore, 71 of Niagara Falls, NY, went home to see his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 1, 2020 at Niagara Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer. Born July 10, 1948 in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late John and Josephine (Pantona) Ellsmore. Chuck graduated from Niagara Falls High School. On October 8, 1966 he married Judy R. (Lewis) Ellsmore. Chuck was the proprietor of Tally-Ho Sub House for 20 years. In addition, Chuck was a Truck Driver and 19A Certified Transportation Examiner for local school districts. He enjoyed going to the casino and loved Elvis Presley and animals especially Boo Boo and Buddy. Above all, Chuck loved his family. In addition to his wife of 53 years, Judy, Chuck is survived by daughters, Kelly Czaja and Kathy-Jo Ellsmore; his grandchildren, Charles, Rhiannon, Allyson, Sarah, Kassidy, Kurtis and Kyle; great granddaughters Mackenzie and Graclynn; his sisters Isabel (Donald) Beehler and Carolynn (late Peter) Elia, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Chuck was predeceased by an infant son Edward, his infant great-grandson Bryson, and his brother John Ellsmore. 5205 | Charles E. Thursam died November 17, 2022. Born November 8, 1934, he was the son of Walter and Irene (Marsh) Thursam. Graduating from Newfane Central School (1952) and Penn State University (1956), Chuck served in the US Army and Army Reserves. He was married to his ‘best girl’, Petie, for nearly 66 years. He worked at Harrison Radiator, retiring in 1992, from his job in labor relations. During retirement, Chuck and Petie enjoyed many RV trips, golfing wherever they could. Throughout his life, Chuck was active in his church and community, enjoyed sports, and will be remembered for the nuggets of wisdom shared with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife Patricia (Petie), daughters Kelly (Kenneth) Eick and Kathleen Bower, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. 5206 | Charles Edward "Charlie" Mathew, 81, of Rensselaer, Indiana passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Rensselaer Care Center . He was born in Wolcott, Indiana on September 30, 1934, the son of Herman and Ora (Marquis) Mathew. Charlie was raised in the Wolcott area, graduating from Wolcott High School with the Class of 1952. He was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer and enjoyed time with the extended church family which he came to know over many years. Charlie was a 4th Degree Knight, Knights of Columbus Bishop Dwenger Council #1881, and a member of American Legion Post #29, Moose Lodge #2272 and Fraternal Order of Eagles #2548. He enjoyed a good card game, fishing, attending his grandchildren's events, especially sporting events and the race team, and many hours of crackling walnuts. Charlie was involved in many business adventures, including owner of the Hoosier Inn Hotel, Mathew Apartments and Rentals, American Breeders Service, Rensselaer Taxi, Northside Auto, and Superior Floor Cleaning. He was a former school bus driver and movie operator for The Palace Theater and at St. Joseph College. He was involved with the Chicago Board of Trade as a commodities broker and investments with Signature Inns and Bardstown Distillery. Charlie also provided over-the-road transportation for many local businesses. Surviving are his loving children, Roger (Kim) Mathew, Arlene (Jon) Castongia, Kent (Sharon) Mathew, Ave (Jill) Mathew and Marissha Mathew all of Rensselaer, Natalie (Ron) Hageman of Kentucky, and Vanessa (Ron) Sheldon of Remington, Ind.. He was blessed with twenty loving grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. 5207 | CHARLES FISCHER DIES Former Policeman Was Serving on Jury at Time of Sudden Death. NORTH TONAWANDA - Charles J. Fischer, 59 years old, 185 Miller street, a former North Tonawanda policeman, dropped dead shortly after 8 o'clock this morning In the former Lockport trolley station in Payne avenue. Mr. Fischer was on his way to board a bus for Lockport, where he had been serving on a jury. The jury on which Mr Fischer was serving was trying a negligence action in supreme court and when news of his death was received, it was stipulated that the case be continued with the balance of the jury. He was born in North Tonawanda and spent his entire life here he was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran church. Surviving are his wife, Ida; a daughter, Mrs. Walter Kriedemann, and three sons. 5211 | Charles H. Michel 93, of Ransomville, passed peacefully at home on April 18, 2024.He was born in Niagara Falls in 1930 to the late Herbert and Elizabeth Michel. He served in the US Army where he was stationed in Austria until his Honorary discharge in 1953. Charles married Jessie Grose in 1956 and spent 67 years together. They enjoyed camping, traveling, and raising their family together. He also took pride in helping to raise their granddaughter (the apple of his eye) and great grandson. Charles will be remembered for being an avid sportsman. He was a member of the North Forest Rod and Gun Club where he participated in trap and skeet for many years. He enjoyed sharing his love for hunting and fishing with his family. Charles retired from CXST in 1990 after 30 years of being a carman. He was a member of the Ransomville United Methodist Church. Besides his wife, Charles will be greatly missed by his sons: Charles (Kathy) Michel and James (Anna) Michel. He was born on the family homestead in Lewiston, NY, on June 26, 1936 the son of the late James and Lucille [Farinella] Andalora. Mr. Andalora was an iron worker with Labor Local # 9 in Niagara Falls for over 38 years before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, singing and playing his guitar and was an avid sportsman. Mr. Andalora was the husband of the late Catherine Rose [Fleming] Andalora, who passed away on November 25, 2014. He is survived by two sons Charles J. (Catherine) Andalora and Vincent J. Born on January 11, 1960 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Arnold and Roxanna (Bowman) Carr. On May 25, 1985, Charles married the former Antoinette “Toni” DeMonico in Niagara Falls. She predeceased him on November 26, 2009. Mr. Carr was a lifelong area resident. Charles attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Wheatfield High School. Most recently, he was employed by the Seneca Niagara Casino. Previously, Mr. Carr worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber and United Parcel Service (UPS). Charles was a dedicated father and grandfather and a loving brother. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. Mr. Carr is survived by his children, Brian A. (Monica) Bugyi, Robert C. Carr and Tiffany L. 5218 | Charles J. Keith, of the Town of Wheatfield, passed from this earthly life on Tuesday November 17, 2015 at his home with his loving family at his side while under care of Niagara Hospice. He was born in Altoona, PA, on May 10, 1920, a son of the late Charles Alvin & Mary Ellen (Bowery) Keith. Following his graduation he entered the United States Navy and served with the Seabees during World War II and was honorably discharged in August of 1946. Mr. Keith was employed and retired as a machinist with the Union Carbide Company. He also enjoyed helping to operate his late wife, Edith’s Ceramics business out of their home for 23 years until it’s closing in 1998. He was a longtime active member of the First United Methodist Church. Both he and his late wife, Edith, were avid bowlers and bowled on many individual and mixed couples leagues at both Beverly Lanes and the Rapids Bowling Alley. Golfing was also a passion he enjoyed both by playing and watching it on TV. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Wheatfield Post # 1451. Charlie was the former co-owner and operator of Bergholz Garage, and former owner of Kroening's Garage, in Sanborn. He was also a member of the Bergholz Fire Company, where he was a former chief, and a former EMT with Tri-Community Ambulance Service, Inc. Charlie was the son of the late Harold and Jeanette M. Schmidt. Step-son of Jean Schmidt. 5221 | Charles Llewellyn Horton Charles Llewellyn Horton of 2204 Ontario Ave. died Saturday (Nov. 6, 1982) - his 76th birthday - in Memorial Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Newfane, Horton came to Niagara Falls in 1905. He was owner-operator of Horton's Falls Dairy for many years, retiring in 1972. The dairy was started by his father and mother, the late Charles T. and Rose Horton. He was a life member of BPO Elks 346 and the American Legion John J. Welch post. Horton is survived by his wife Marian Lilley Horton; one daughter, Mrs. Douglas B. (Susan) Walck; and three grandchildren, all of Niagara Falls. 5222 | Charles Louis Roepke, 86, of Albany entered into rest Tuesday at Gateway Gardens in Eugene. He was born in Strafford, Mo., the son of Agustive F. and Hedwig A. (Hunholtz) Roepke.He was raised in Missouri and married Edith Cooksey in Springfield, Mo., on June 25, 1941. During World War II, the Roepkes moved with their toddler son to San Diego, Calif., where their two girls were born. In 1950 the family moved to the Knox Butte area and bought their home of over 50 years.Charles pastored the Wren Community Church for a while in the 1950s. He worked for 30-plus years for Willamette Industries, retiring in 1981. He very much enjoyed working in his gardens and raising his cows. He will be remembered as a godly man who shared his faith everywhere he went.He is survived by son Charles M. Woolson on September 3, 2001 while on a Princess Cruise in the Bahamas. He worked for Sumitomo Rubber in Tonawanda for 23 years. Chuck loved motorsports, ranging from NASCAR to riding his ATV or snowmobile through Byrn Cliff in Varysburg, NY and Old Forge, NY and Tall Pines in Pennsylvania. He was a die hard Buffalo Bills fan, always rooting for his team. Chuck would light up the room while always offering a joke and being the jokester. He loved to spend time with his family, while making memories that will last forever. He graduated from Lewiston Porter in 1971 and joined as a member of the National Guard. He was employed with the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission since August of 1974, where he was a Toll Captain until his passing. Chuck was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying kayaking and hunting with his lifelong best friend, Tom White of Wilson. Nickles, Jr. Chuck graduated from LaSalle High School. He was a member of the United States Navy from 1982 until his honorable discharge in 1988, serving as a holesnipe. He was employed as Superintendent of the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center in Niagara Falls, NY for 7 years. He enjoyed building computers, and consulted with Microsoft and the FBI, serving as a member of the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team. In conjunction with his friend, Scot, Chuck ran the International Soldier Alliance gaming community with thousands of gamers from over a dozen different countries and throughout the entire US. Chuck was extremely proud of the fact he safely drove a Semi cross country for over 9 years resulting in a million miles plus. He was a member of the Kingsman Bowling League, the Brother Groundhogs and the Bills Mafia. He loved sailing on his 26-foot sailboat in Chautauqua Lake. Above all, he cherished his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. 5233 | Charles was born in Buffalo Erie Co., N.Y., the only son of Charles Edward and Mary Flynn Buckner on May 15, 1931. His mother; Mary B. Flynn was the daughter of Patrick J. and Mary R. Flynn of Buffalo, Erie, Co., N.Y., and Charles, Sr, was the son of Edward and Mary Pearl Wood Buckner of Medina, Orleans Co., N.Y. Right after his parents were married, they moved in with the his Mother's cousins, Mr. & Mrs. Harold E. & Elizabeth Barney at 344 DeWitt St., Buffalo, N.Y. While his Father worked in construction, his Mother soon found herself expecting their first child, which would be Charles. Unfortunately, fate dealt a cruel blow when a on the job accident took Charles, Sr.'s life in the spring of 1931. Family lore explains that a "sewer tile" rolled down upon him in a hole, killing him instantly. No obituary or newspaper report has been located to date, other than a note in "The Medina Daily Journal" on March 03, 1931 stating that his Father's Sister (Mildred Buckner Hellert) had been called to Buffalo over the previous weekend due to his death. Charles and his younger brother, Joseph, pursued careers in the metal works area as tinners, turners or proprietors of hardware or metal works businesses. Coincidentally, their cousins, children of their Aunt Louise Schwenk Timmer who also lived in Kansas City, were engaged in similar businesses. He married Louisa Cordes on February 28, 1904. They had four children, one died as an infant. Louisa was just 53 years old when she passed away at her home at 1809 Northern, Independence, Mo. Louisa died in 1935 at the age of 53. When he was 61, Charles married Christie Inez Hartley, 47 years old, on January 17, 1942 in Maywood Baptist Church. They had no children together. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, he began working at the former Vanadium in Niagara Falls. Chuck later retired from the New York Power Authority as an electrician after many years. Chuck was a member of the I.S.D.A Power City Lodge and the Cristoforo Colombo Society. He enjoyed garage saling, playing poker with his friends, scratching lottery tickets, as well as traveling to Las Vegas. He was also a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills. Above all, Charles loved spending time with his family. Mr. Guagenti is survived by his step-children, Nelson (Diane) Linza and Marilyn Delahoy; his beloved caregivers: his niece, Joan (Kevin) Howes and his great-nephews, Matthew and Kyle Howes. 5239 | Charlotte R. (Dawson) Mazur of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully under the care of Niagara Hospice on Sunday, August 12, 2018. Born in Branchville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Josiah and Alma Browning Dawson. Charlotte was a graduate of Lower Richland High School, Class of 1942. After high school, she worked in the PX at Fort Jackson in Columbia SC, where she met her first husband, Anthony Vekich, Sr.. After World War II, Charlotte moved to Niagara Falls with her family. In the 1960s, Charlotte worked at the Dolly Madison bakery on Buffalo Avenue. In July 1965, she married her second husband, Walter E. Mazur, Jr., who predeceased her on July 14, 2001. Charlotte was a woman of many interests. She enjoyed crocheting, music, reading, puzzles and word finds, bowling and bingo. She also spent many hours tuned to Judge Judy and a variety of other court TV shows. Most of all, Charlotte was dedicated to her family. Despite being burdened with many hardships throughout her life, she always persevered. Her drive and determination led her to become the consummate mom, always busy cooking, cleaning, gardening, doing home repairs etc. to provide the best life possible for her children. She was a true go-getter and was always involved in the lives of those she loved. In her later years, she transitioned from "hands-on" to more of a "supervisory" role around the house; nonetheless, she always strived to make that house a home. To say that Charlotte was a wonderful person would be a tremendous understatement. She was truly a fun person to be around with a smile and laugh that could light up any room. While she could be tough and demanding to those around her, it was always done with the goal of making you the best that you could be. Charlotte's kindness, caring and love will be forever cherished and sadly missed by everyone who knew her. We were all lucky to have her. Charlotte is survived by her children Anthony (Roxann) Vekich, Jr., Charlene Vekich, Steven Vekich and Christopher (Allicia) Mazur. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Bridget (Richard) Cadwalader; Anthony (Daniella) Vekich, III; Shawn (Rhonda) Vekich; Amanda (Cliff) Cobb; Brianna (Greg) Bonnette; Chandra Vekich-Fitzsimmons and Lucas Mazur, along with 16 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Charlotte is also survived by her sister, Betty R. Briggs of Lone Star, SC as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Charlotte was predeceased by her brothers Joseph, J.B. and Francis Dawson. Born September 4, 1926 in Lockport, Charlotte is the daughter of the late Fred and Evelyn (Mietz) Winters. Charlotte is a U of R graduate and worked in construction and real estate for several years; most recently Hunt Real Estate ERA in Fairport. She was a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, member of Greater Rochester Association of Realtors and has earned several designations including ERA Top Gun Academy; Accredited Buyer's Representative; Graduate, Realtor Institute; Council of Residential Specialists and the ePRO Technology Certification Program. She loved gardening, reading and playing her piano. She is survived by siblings: Darvin (Dorothy) Winters and Elaine Tibbs and several nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of the Missouri School of Mines, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi Epsilon fraternity. He was also a member of the Niagara River Masonic Lodge in Niagara Falls for 67 years. During World War II, he served with U.S. Navy as a member of the Sea Bees.He was the husband of Colette (Simard) Hudson, to whom he had been married to for 47 years. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Lysanne LaPierre and her husband, Dean of Andover; two grandchildren, Nicole and Cameron LaPierre; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Norm Hudson, Kathryn Eitel and Jane Hartsell. Belle was an incredible cook and enjoyed sharing recipes and meals with her family. Belle’s beautiful heart expanded out to all those who needed a listening ear or a voice to speak for them. 5245 | Cherry Hill - Doris J. DeVantier, age 84, of Cherry Hill passed away after a short illness on December 5, 2017. She was the devoted and loving wife of the late Roger DeVantier for 62 years. Doris was born in Niagara Falls, NY the first child of the late Clarence and Esther Wittkopp. Doris and Roger moved to Cherry Hill in 1957. After passionately raising four children (some required more effort than others), she decided to return to school and earned her diploma as a licensed practical nurse. She helped numerous patients in the Delaware Valley. She was a charter member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church where she was active and energetic in the life of the church until her death. Doris enjoyed knitting, sewing, ceramics, choir singing, and travel. Most of all she was devoted to her family. Roger and Doris especially cherished the annual vacations at Sea Isle City, NJ. They educated us about God's most incredible gift - our Family. Her amazingly strong character taught us lessons that are being passed down to multiple generations through her children and grandchildren. Her last few years of life were challenged by numerous physical and emotional heartaches. She faced all of them with a positive attitude, grace, and exceptional strength that are a true inspiration to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband Roger, daughter Joyce White and son Mark DeVantier. Left to cherish her memory include her children Wayne (Pam) DeVantier of Chesapeake, VA, Keith (Betty Jo) DeVantier of Cornelius, NC , daughter in law Vickie DeVantier of Richardson, TX, and son in law Don White of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Cheryl was known as a social butterfly and loved being in the presence of her family and friends. She enjoyed going out to eat, spending time at Tim Horton’s, shopping, as well as long rides in the car. She was devoted to her Christian faith and loved going to church. In addition to her loving husband of 37 years, she is survived by her step-daughters, Christina and Rosanna Azzinaro; one brother, David (Tina) Smith; her longtime friend and caretaker, Shala Wilson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Bradford, PA, she was the daughter of the late William and Valda (Fellows) Johns. Cher, as she was affectionately known by many, was a graduate of LaSalle Senior High School in 1963 and attended Cheryl Fells School of Business. She was employed at Bell Aerospace and Hooker Chemical. Most recently, she worked as an Administrative Assistant at the Niagara County Health Department in Niagara Falls, NY until her retirement in 2007. On January 1, 1990, she married James A. Gatto in Niagara Falls. Mr. Gatto predeceased her on October 30, 2008 after 18 years of marriage. Cheryl was a member of the Moose Lodge and the 3-F Club, both in Lewiston, NY. She loved her home and taking care of her yard, and enjoyed spending summers at Cuddy’s Pine Cove in North Frontenac, ON, Canada with family and friends. A thoughtful and kind friend and confidant to many, Cher loved to socialize and be around others. She especially enjoyed playing cards with her daughter, granddaughters, and beloved friend, Linda Hardison.
