5352 | Clinton NY Courier - 5/28/1964 Durward Howe Brandis, a native of Clinton, died Monday, May 18, at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California, following a heart attack. He was 48. Mr. Brandis, the son of Mr. and- Mrs. Durward F. Brandis of Clinton, lived at 950 Plesanthill road, Redwood City, for the past eight years. He had moved there from San Mateo, Calif., and was Supervisor of Training Aids and Technical Instructor at United Air Lines. He was a pilot during World War II. Mr. Brandis is survived by bis wife, the former Patricia Anne Thatch, and two sons, Durward Porter and Scott Thatch, all of Redwood City; his parents in Clinton; and a brother, Fay William Brandis of Smithtown. He was born in Oriskany Falls on Dec. 3, 1895, the son of John E. and Alice. .Brady Dolan. He was educated in Oriskany Falls schools and had spent'most of his life there engaged in the .coal and lumber business. He was vicepresident of First Trust and Deposit Company, veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member t»f Oneida Lodge 767, BPO Elks. He was a member of St. Joseph's C^hurch and its Holy Name Society. He is survived by his wife; one son, John A. Dolan; two granddaughters, Nancy and Linda Dolan. The funeral was at 9 a.m. Wednesday from his home and 9:30 from St. Joseph's Church where a solemn requiem high Mass was celebrated. A native of Watertown, he was the son of William and Jennie Center Jessmore. In 1900 he married Rosella Evans, who died last March. Surviving are five daughters, among them Mrs. Mildred Timian and Gladys Irene Jessmore, of Syracuse, a son Crandall, of Utica, and a stepson, Roy Davey, Brimfield street, Clinton. Mrs. Sill was'spending the summer with her parents Mr. and Mrs. William F.Brandis of Franklin Springs, which had been her custom since her marriage. Mrs. Sill was born in Franklin Springs March 2, 1895, and was a young woman possessed of unusual charm and character. She attended Clinton High School and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in this village. On Christmas eve, 1919, she was united in marriage with Claude C. Sill and since that time had resided in Billings, Mont., returning here for a visit on several occasions. Surviving are two sons, Walter S. Birge of Clinton, and Wallace W. Birge of New York City; a brother, George Bradley of Whitesboro and two grandchildren, Claire and Robert Birge of this village. He was born February 10, 1915, in Forest City, Pennsylvania, the son of Anthony J. and Molly Novak Bechy, Sr. He attended school in the Forest City system and in Rome. In 1942 he married Marilyn Perry. She died December 17, 1975. Mr. Bechy was employed as a truck driver with Red Star Express for over 20 years, until his retirement in 1977. He had previously worked at Ingersolls North American Van Lines. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, the Teamsters Local 182 and was formerly a member of the Moose Club and Polish Home. He is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Hughes of Ballston Spa, Mrs. Kenneth (Lori) Rifenburg of Madison, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Bikowsky of Munnsville, Mrs. Thomas (Patricia) Wilcox of Westmoreland, Miss Karen Bechy of Rome and Miss Jeanne Bechy of Elmira; three sons, Anthony J. Tooker, Tries to Realize on High Powdered Guns All in Perfect Condition, Oiled and Polished. BatavLa.Attorney William E. Webster of Batavia, has been engaged by the widow to close the estate of Pierson E. Tooker, formerly of Batavia and before his death station agent at Long wood. Tooker was 54 years old and besides his wife, is survived by eight children. The chie/ trouble will be to realize on Mr. Tooker's estate, which is all personal property, in the shape of high-powered rifles and revolvers, of which he had 175 at the time of his death. There are 75 revolvers. There are modern rifles that will kill. at a distance of over a mile and fine 44 caliber Colt revolvers. It is estimated that the arms are worth over $2,000. while Tooker left his family almost penniless. Tooker bad a mania for collecting firearms. All were kept In perfec; condition, oiled and polished and a record kept In a book of the condition of the arms. He was once arrested on suspicion that he had stolen the large supply of new firearms and, after the case against him was dropped, he brought suit for defamation of character and was awarded a verdict of $1,500. Tooker, a Former Resident, Will Be Surprised to Learn of His Arrest on Serious Charge. A former resident of this city. Pierson E. Tooker, familiarly known here as "Birdie" Tooker, has been engaged In car robbery operations on a large scale at Longwood near Corfu. Tooker was placed under arrest on Tuesday afler noon on a charge, of robbing the cars of the New. York Central railroad. Enough miscellaneous material was found on ;his farm to stock a department store. The railroad detectives searched the Tooker premises and found cases of stationery, boots and shoes, a large number of rifles, shot guns and revolvers, perfumery, soaps and a large amount of miscellaneous merchandise. There was also found a number of car seals and a Sealer and the railway officials are of the opinion that Tooker broke open the cars ami after taking what suited his fancy resealed, the cars again. Tooker is. 45 years old and was born in this city, living at the corrner ot Fairfield Avenue and Tenth Street the greater part of his life, He was a telegraph operator and for a time worked In the employment of the Michigan Central railroad on the Canadian side of the river. He was also employed as an operator at the Falls Street station of the New York Central railroad: As near as can he ascertained. he removed from this city about ten years ago. 5364 | Clyde R. Kroening 74, of Sanborn, NY, died Saturday February 5, 2005, in Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. He was a life long resident of the Town of Lewiston, born on April 3, 1930, the son of William and Ella [ DeVantier ] Kroening, where he attended local schools. He had operated the family dairy farm for most of his life, he also was a heavy equipment operator and would work for area contractors. He was a member of the Agriculture Stabilization Committee of Niagara County for several years. Clyde was an exempt member of the Sanborn Fire Company and had also served as a Town Constable for the Town of Lewiston for many years. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the former Sanborn Bowling League. Clyde was an avid golfer, and would winter in Florida, during which time he would work at the Disney World Golf Pro Shop, and as a Tee Off starter for the course. He was predeceased by his first wife Maurine Bruss Kroening who died in 1986. Surviving is his wife of 15 years, Linda G. [ Peck ] Kroening; a daughter, Linda Bonner, of Niagara Falls, Ont.; a son Russell Kroening, of Belham, TX; a sister, JoAnn [ Delbert ] Pfohl, of Sanborn; a nephew, Mark Pfohl. Morehouse and children, Gary Mark, Criag and Amy, from Shar- on, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ploetz, and daughter Sandra and Barbara, from West Valley, N. Y. All these were at the table, togeth- er with sisters of Pastor Buerger, Mrs. Ted Berymark and her hus- band, and Mrs. Robert Bleasdale, and her daughter, Mrs. Stanley Mo- lenda and daughter Pamela, all of Buffalo, N. Y., and Mrs. Buerger's brother, Mr. Edlward Secore, and her niece, Mrs. Packard Stanton, both of Pittsburg, Pa. and Rev. and Mrs. H. W. Sander, of Little Val- ley; Rev. Sander gave the invoca- tion. The celebration was climaxed by, a reception in the Church Parlora in the evening, to which the en- tire congregation, was invited. The evening was opened with some brief remarks by the Rev. H. W. Sander, of Little Valley, N. Y., a long-time friend of Pastor Buerg- er, who, with his wife came for the festivities. Thereupon an en- tertainment committee took over, and presented a sketch of the lives of the celebrants in a most interesting manner, livened by scenes from their life cast on the screen by an opaque projector. The Committee consisted of Mesdames Nick Deleo, Theodore Mattlce, Lai verne Sick and Gratton Wallace. The President of the congregation, Mr. Lewis Zeh, extended congratu- lations in behalf of the congrega- tion, and presented the couple with a "Statolounger" chair. 5367 | Cohocton NY Valley Times Index 1940-1942 Hiram Ketch, died at his farm borne at Bath Monday, July 22, at the age of 83. His funeral was held at his late home Thursday, with burial in Nondaga cemetery. The Rev. P. E. Greenwalt, protestant chaplain at the Veterans Facility, conducted the funeral. Hiram Ketch was born in Cohocton, March 5, 1857, the son of Cyrus and Mary VanHousen Ketch. He attended the Naples High School and after graduation taught for some years. He was endowed with a remarkable understanding of the science of numbers, and retained an almost unbelieveable memory of dates. In arithmetic he was a prodigy, especially in addition and multiplication. Mr. Ketch was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church at Wallace. In his younger years he was a licensed "exhorter" and often conducted church services. He was married Dec. 11, 1878, to Miss Ada Lyke, and two children were born of the union, a son, Lewis Ketch, who owns the farm in what was formerly known as Long well's Lane, north of the Veterans' Facility; and a daughter, Maude, who became the wife of Hibbard Brush, and who died March 1, 1936. George, of Deerfield Beach, was 64. Born in Indiana, George began his 33 years of military service with the RAF in Canada. He flew bombing missions over England and served in World II, the Korean War and the Viet Nam War. He retired to Florida from his Washington, D.C., State Department post 11 years ago. He retired as a full colonel after receiving numerous medals. George was a member of the Inverness Elks Club and Tam O'Shanter Golf Club in Pompano Beach. He is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters Mrs. Robert Thomas, of Indianapolis, Inc.l Mrs. Edgar Ward, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; son William G. George II of Deerfield, Ill; and ive grandchildren. Born on December 24, 1945, in Medina, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Grace (Tracey) Tylec. Colleen attended Middleport High School and Niagara University, where she received her Registered Nursing degree, specializing in labor and delivering. She worked for 44 years at the Medina Hospital. She assisted in delivering over 6,000 babies. Colleen was a communicant of the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Medina and later of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Middleport. She enjoyed reading, feeding wild birds and gardening. With her birthday being on Christmas Eve, Christmas was her favorite time of the year. Colleen mostly enjoyed spending time with her family that she loved so much. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, William "Bill" Lewandowski; one daughter, Amy Niethe of Cape Vincent, NY; two step-daughters, Doreen (David) Wolff of Lancaster, PA, and Kathleen (David) Allen of Winter Park, FL.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; siblings, Patricia (Thomas) White of Middletown, CT, Vincent (Cindy) Tylec of Middleport, NY, and Mark (Gail) Tylec of Deland, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Colleen is predeceased by one daughter, Tracey Baker; and one sister, M. Pam Belfield. There are no calling hours. 5375 | Colonel Deanna J. Patterson, US Army Retired, 72, passed away at her home on November 22, 2021. She was a member of the Choctaw Nation and was proud of her heritage and service to the country. Born in Kirkland, WA, she was the daughter of the late Dean and Isobel (Gibbons) Peters. Deanna’s father was in the US Navy and the family lived in Alaska, Washington, and Kansas. She met her husband Percy “Pete” Patterson in Leavenworth, KS while he was in the Army and they were married on September 21, 1967. They moved to the Tuscarora Nation and started their family soon thereafter, raising 6 children. While raising her family, she graduated from Niagara County Community College as an RN. She continued on to get her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner from Daemen and D’Youville Colleges. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Tuscarora Health Clinic, the Niagara County Jail, and the Bath Veteran’s Administration Hospital. In 1981, she joined the US Army as a reservist. She travelled extensively through her service, and was called to active duty for several campaigns. She made many lifelong friends through her work and travels. She enjoyed taking care of the elderly most of all. She achieved the rank of Colonel and was honorably discharged from the Army in 2009. Deanna loved writing poetry, birdwatching, gardening flowers, going to the beach, and spending time with her family. In addition to her husband of 54 years, Deanna is survived by her children, Andrea (Galen) Fischer, Anjanette (Robert) Lecher, Amber Patterson, Percy (Lisa) Patterson, III, and Aaron Patterson; her grandchildren, Corey Fischer, Alix Fischer, Galyne Fischer, Isobella Lecher, Lena Lecher, Tacomah Hucks, Saege Hucks, Ryder Patterson, Kai Patterson, Ayla Patterson, Jazmyne Robins, Shia-Patterson Ground, and Arlan Patterson-Ground; her great-grandchildren, Elanynerose Hucks and Violette Hucks; her siblings, Shirley (Dave) Fairfield, Renita (late Rick) Hewlett, and Charles (Holly) Peters, as well as several sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY on April 4, 1930, the daughter of the late Rocco and Catherine (Mariano) Migliazzo. Concetta grew up on 12th Street in Niagara Falls where she raised her family and then moved to Lewiston. She was employed at Memorial Medical Center, Lincoln's Department Store and with the NIOGA Library System for 26 years before retiring in 1991. A special time of her life was when she traveled to Italy to visit with extended family in 2002. She had fond memories of this time Concetta was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for 10 years and volunteered at the John Duke Center for 25 years, was an election inspector and had received the Iney Wallens Good Neighorbood Award. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Societa' Femminile Cristoforo Columbo, the Madonna Del Soccorso Societa, the Lewiston Seniors, Ladies of the Mist, the Socialites and Parents Without Partners. Concetta loved spending time with and taking care of her family. She was the wife of the late Dominick Paolone, who passed away in November of 1962. Concetta is survived by her three daughters, Patricia A. (John) Atashian, Rosemary A. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Billy) F. Carkeet, Sr.; brothers, Robert Beatty and Jack Beatty; and sisters, Mary Jane Norris, Gayle Beatty, and Gloria Beatty. She is survived by her four children, William F. Carkeet, Jr. (Patty), Virginia Mathis (Gene), Steven G. Carkeet (Julie), and Gloria Carkeet; brothers, Richard Beatty and Paul Beatty; and sister, Judy Beatty Killian. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christopher B. Carkeet (Jennifer), Melissa C. Boals (Chris), Jennifer Fristick, Geoffrey Carkeet (Leigh Ann), Tracy C. Dugan (Casey), Timothy Fristick, Michael Carkeet (Maury), Catie Carkeet and eight great-grandchildren, Maggie Carkeet, Will Boals, John Carkeet, Samantha Boals, Presley Cate Dugan, Nala Carkeet, Kendall Carkeet and Olivia Dugan. She is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews. Connie was a 1942 graduate of Syracuse University, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. Following graduation, she served as a WAVE in the United States Navy during WWII. While stationed at the St. Albans Naval Hospital on Long Island, NY, Connie met her future husband, Billy. They eventually settled in Billy's hometown of Memphis, opening the first of two family-owned furniture stores in 1947. A lover of animals and dogs in particular, Connie enjoyed all things family including European vacations, time at her Florida condo, annual visits to Niagara Falls, and trips to Tunica with "the girls." She was a voracious reader who loved gardening and her weekly bridge group. A loyal University of Memphis Tiger basketball fan, she rarely missed a home game. Her faith was strong, and she was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and St. Luke Lutheran Church, both in Memphis. Connie was extremely grateful for the loving support of her caregivers, Tina Smith and Amanda Griggs, and the wonderful team at Methodist Hospice. Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, July 13th with the service at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 14th, both at Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Chapel. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Serafino and Rose (Peri) Manuse. Connie grew up on 20th Street in the Old Italian Neighborhood, where she was raised by her parents and grandmother Jessie Peri. Connie was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School, and later graduated from Buffalo State with a Bachelor Degree in Art Education. On August 2, 1958, she married Eugene E. Molak at St. Joseph Church. Connie was employed as a Display and Communications Manager with the Niagara Falls Public Library for 20 years. A skilled artist, Connie made many oil paintings and wooden dolls. She was a member of the Western New York Doll Club. She also enjoyed cooking, walking the Gorge daily, and was a devoted Catholic, regularly attending Mass. Connie had many friends in all walks of life and her friends remarked about her abundance of kindness. She remained a guiding light for her family throughout her whole life. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Brown of Pittsburgh, Pa., was solemnized at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church here. The Rev. Walter R. Craig, pastor of the church, performed the ceremony. Mrs. Arnold C. Harwood was at the church organ. The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose for her wedding a waltz-length gown of peau de soie with chantilly applique and fingertip veil of silk illusion, and headdress shirred with orange blossoms. She carried a bouquet of white roses and pom-pons. She had as her maid of honor Miss Janet Lepard of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Miss Barbara L. Brown of New York City, sister of the groom was bridesmaid. Miss Lepard wore a gown of muted rose peau de soie and a headband of white flowers. Her bouquet was of white roses, pom-pons and carnations. Miss Brown wore a similar -gown and headband, and her flowers were pom-pons and carnations. The bride's mother chose a navy blue silk dress with a white gardenia corsage, while Mr. Brown's mother wore a dress of royal blue wool, also with a corsage of white Gardenias. Edward H. Strieker of Pittsburgh was Mr. Brown's best man. Mrs. Brown is a graduate of Cooperstown Central School, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Cornell University last June. Since that time she has been a home economics advisor with Public Service of New Jersey in Newark. Her husband is a graduate of Cornell University, and is a sales representative with the Jones and Laughlin ; Steel Corporation in New York City. Following the ceremony, a reception for 150 guests was held at the home of the bride's parents on Nelson Avenue, after which the couple left for a wedding trip through the Laurentians in Canada. Cordes married Mary Madolene Ware on September 9, 1928. They had one son born to them: David. For many years, Cordes ran a grocery store in Kansas City. After retiring, he and Mary moved to Bradenton, Florida in 1982. 5397 | Corliss Alida Decker, formerly of the Tuscarora Nation, was called to her heavenly home on Monday, October 15, 2018, at Mt. View Assisted Living in Lockport, NY.. She was a member of the Turtle Clan, born on the Tuscarora Nation, March 17, 1926, the daughter of the late Jonathan and Abigail [Johnson] Printup. Corliss graduated from LaSalle High School in 1945. She also attended Keuka and D'Youville Colleges. She worked at Carborundum for over 15 years as a Government Inspector. She also worked many years for the Town of Lewiston as program director for the Sanbornite Seniors. She was a soloist for the Eastern Star in Ransomville and for the Masonic Lodge in Niagara Falls. For many years she was a Sunday school teacher at the Sanborn Baptist Church and assistant for the children's youth group as well as assistant to the choir director. She most recently was a member of St Peters Lutheran Church in Sanborn. Corliss married Charles L. Decker on August 31, 1946, he passed away on December 26, 2013. She is survived by one daughter, Gail A. (Serge) Komar, six grandchildren, Aaron (Natalie) Faley, Alex (Christine), Kyle & Liam Anderson, Macy Mae Halim and Mila Rose Kolmar and two great grandchildren Alaska and Hugh Anderson, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Corliss was the sister of the late Captain Vincent Printup and John Printup. Her family will be present on Friday from 5-7 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY. 5399 | Corning NY Evening Leader - 10/21/1933 Michael Darmstadt, aged 53, former resident of this city, and a car man for the New York Central Railroad, was found dead Friday morning leaning against a telephone post on his farm in the Town of Caton between Caton and Sagetown on the Caton-Elmira Road. Dr. W. S. Cobb, coroner, was called and pronounced death due to dilatation of the heart. Mr Darmstadt, was found by his brother, Nicholas, who makes his home with the family. Mr. Darmstadt had, so far aa any member of the family knew, never suffered from heart trouble. He had been apparently In good health prior to his death. Friday morning he left the house fairly early to put the cows into another pasture some distance from the house. His family wondered why he had not returned as time went on but did not become worried about him. When his brother returned from 'his milk route about 9 o'clock his attention was caught by something which resembled a person leaning against a telephone post in a field some distance from the house. After putting up his truck he decided in investigate and found his brother. Death had occurred a short time prior. Mr. Darmstadt was born in Caton February 2, 1880, the son of Adam and Kathryn Kishmah. Darmstadt. He was married to Minerva Bly of Caton In Elmira October 16, 1915. Mr. and Mrs. Darmstadt resided for several years at 12 Winfield street. Corning, moving to Caton last February, Since 1917 Mr. Darmstadt has been Employed as a carman by the New York Central Railroad. He is a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen. He is survived by his widow;' three sons, Francis, a freshman at Northside High School, Doreyn and Alyn, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Gorges of Rochester, Mrs. Rudolf Schuh, of Elmira, and Mrs. Clarence Cole, of Pine City; one brother, Nicholas, at home. The body was removed to the Phillips Funeral Home from which place it was removed to the late home this morning. The funeral will be held from the late home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. 5400 | Corning NY Evening Leader - 10/21/1937 Gerald LaMonica, 36, resident of the Tompkins Hotel in this city, died at 6:15 a. m. today at Corning Hospital, of Injuries Coroner W. S. Cobb stated he received last Friday evening in an automobile accident between Coopers and Campbell. The coroner today opened an investigation into circumstances of the accident. Admitted to the hospital with a compound fracture of the left leg, LaMonica's leg was amputat ed Monday at the knee in an effort to save his life. His condition, already critical, failed to improve. Coroner Cobb said that the only person believed to be a wit- ness to the accident is Mrs. Luella McCarthy of this city, whom he planned to question today. He Bald that she is a waitress at the Baron Steuben Hotel and lives in the Lawrence building on Cedar street. The coroner said that accord- tag to his information LaMonica was a passenger in a new car owned and driven by Mrs. M:- Carthy, The machine went out of control on "the narrows" between Coopers and Campbell about 10:30 p.m. Friday, he said, and over- turned. It was reported that only LaMonica was injured. Mr. LaMonica was born in Binghamton, which city he gave as his address when admitted to Corning Hospital. He was the son of Joseph and °Jiancy LIqurl LaMonica. During Tnetnast 30 years he lived in Comlng. and while attending North-side High School he was well known as an athlete. He as married In June, 1926, to Tessie Kaulfus. Since August 15 LaMonica had been employed at Corning Glass Works. Surviving are his parents, who reside in Binghamton; his wife, 137 East Market street; two chilren, Ernest and Ger&ld; a sister, Mrs. Nicholas Amico of Rochest e r ; two brothers, Anthony and Joseph LaMonica, Binghamton. The funeral of Mr. LaMonica will be held Saturday morning at ,8:30 o'clock at the Sarsfield-Bell by Funeral Home and at 9 o'clock at St. Vincent de Paul's Church.
