5403 | Corning NY Evening Leader - 2/13/1922 A posthumous child, a daughter. was born February 8, to Mrs. Ola Moore of Tuxill avenue. She will be called Betty Helen Moore. The child's father. Walter Moore, formerly a lineman, died two months ago. ALSO Corning NY Evening Leader - 12/10/1921 Seized. It is believed, with a faint. ing spell While hunting In the woods southeast of the city on the slope, of Spencer Hill yesterday afternoon. Walter Moore, 27. of Roberts Avenue, Tuxlll plot, fell and died from exposure. His lifeless body was found this nurning in tho woods by his father, David M. Moore, who had been his hunting companion yesterday, but who had become separated from his son. Walter Moore has been subject to a peculiar type of seizure ever since he met with an accident while living in Hornell five or six years ago. It is believed that he met with one of these seizures yesterday afternoon after following his footsteps towards home at dusk. The body lay with the face thrust against the earth. Coroner Srnith, who examined the body before it was disturbed, said that Judging from the appearance of the body, the illness had apparently resulted from natural causes and that death had followed from exposure. The blood had gathered in the dead man's head as it was considerably lower than his feet In the position in which the body lay and the complexion was florid when the body was located. No Marks of Violence The coroner found no marks of violence of any kind. The dead man's gun lay near the body the death seems to have been entirely due to natural causes, no autopsy will be necessary and no inquest will be held. Mr. Moore and his father left their home yesterday afternoon and went hunting in the woods along Bailey Creek on the slope of Spencer Hill. They became separated during the course of the afternoon and the father returned home without the son. At first nothing was thought of the matter when the son f a i l e d to put In an appearance at home early last evening but when the night was sev- eral hours old and he had failed to return , a search was made of the property to see if by chance he had stopped into the home of any neigh- ors. Nothing could be found as to whereabouts. The members of the family sat up l a t e into the night waiting for his return but no attempt seems to have been made to search the woods for Mr. Moore last night. Early this morning, the father went to the woods In the vicinity where t h e pair had been hunting yesterday. After tramping about for an hour or mors he came upon the body. He returned at once to the city and made a report of his discovery but when he attempted to lead persons to t h e point where the body had been found he was unable to do so. Mr. Moore's health Is not robust and as he had become exhausted as a result of his long tramps of yesterday and today he had to abandon his second search for the body this morning. In the emergency Boy Scouts of the Presbyterian church under the direction of Harry Mathews, scout master of Troop 9, took up t h e search with the result that the boys located the body shortly before noon. The report of their find was made to police headquarters by S. H. Clark of Tuxlll avenue. Scouts Work Is Praised Coroner Smith this afternoon paid a tribute to the work done by the Scouts In locating the body. The boys who were building a camp along the river today were hastily gotten to- gether and sent Into the vicinity where they located the body In short order. 2ND AD HUNTER 1ST ED Coroner Smith and Police Chief Iianmvr drove to where the body was found and after an examination of t h e body and the surroundings the coroner gave consent for removal of tho body to the undertaking establishment of S. J. Stover. The body was found about one half a mile southwest from the Mrs. M. L. age farm at South Corning. It lay in the woods atout one-half a mile removed from the Bailey Creek road. 5428 | Could be in CHANCEFORD AND LOWER CHANCEFORD TOWNSHIPS, York County. Town in PA could be Elizabeth, Lancaster Co.; This is NOT the same Christian as mentioned in Wythe County, VA. The Fact that he was born in 1768 and would have taken an oath of allegance on July 27, 1778 - he would have been 12 years old. Meanwhile, he was supposed to have died in Old Mount Airy, VA in 1796. Therefore, could not have father children after 1800. Believe his grandfather was Ulrich but his father was another of the sons and not Martin. Perhaps it was Jacob or Peter. Or could Ulrich have had a son, Christian, who was the father of a son by the same name. 2/2005-Obtained book "Some Descendants of Ulrich Stehley" by Joan Keller from library on interlibrary loan for 3 weeks. Found that a Jacob Staley has built a church in 1784 - St Luke's Lutheran in Chanceford Township, York, PA where many of the baptisms and marriages took place. In 1803 Christian Staley purchased several pieces of property on "Buffalo Road" near "18 Mile Creek". Buffalo Road is now Main Street and, I believe, that "18 Mile Creek" is now known as Ransom Creek in Clarence. Showed him as being from Lancaster, PA on the deeds. Property being Township 11 Range 8. Also, John C Staley purchased property at the same time at the same Township and Range. Are they brothers? 1810 Census shows C Stailey in Buffalo, Niagara County, NY - Series: M252 Roll: 29 Page: 127 1800 Census shows Christian Stailey, Jr. in Elizabeth, Lancaster County, PA - Series: M32 Roll: 39 Page: ***** there is a Son with wife and father with children shown on this census - why is there no child named Christian??? Because Christian, Jr. had established his own household. Therefore, his father is also Christian. 1820 Census shows Christian Stailey in Greenwood, Perry County, PA - Series: M33 Roll: 104 Page: 361 Could this site be helpful - http://home.sprynet.com/~rstaley01/stn.htm This reply from the man who has the above web site: Hi Char I doubt that this is the same man. My info shows Christian Staley of N.C. having children there in 1804, 1814, 1816, and 1823. None of the chidren's names are the ones you mentioned. Robert Staley -----Original Message----- From: Charsoos@aol.com Sent: Oct 17, 2006 9:12 PM To: rstaley01@sprynet.com Subject: Staley genealogy Hi I'm not sure if I have written to you before or not. I have a Christian Staley who was born in 1768 and has some children in Pennsylvania and others in New York State. My current information shows that the first of his children, Isaac, was born in 1801 in Lancaster County, PA. It appears that he was married in Lancaster, PA. Other children were: Jonas, Margaret, John Seba, Samuel, Elizabeth and Suzanna. The records in Erie County, NY show that he purchased property in 1803 in Erie County. Could this be your Christian Staley born between 1767 and 1772 in North Carolina???? Appreciate your assistance. Char Soos NOTE: In Skinnersville Cemetery there are two stones with the same dates one with the name of Christian Staley and one with Christian Stailey. The Christian Stailey has his wife, Margaret, next to him. The other Christian Staley is with the stones from John and Barbara. Location of Skinnersville Road Cemetery - North Forest west of Millersport - south on Audubon Parkway - left at first signal which is Frontier Road - stones on left side of street in the far left hand corner - next to Neuman Chapel now part of UB used to be "The Little White Church - 1873" This was a community cemetery and not afflliated with any particular church. Mary Wolf of St Paul Eggertsville (716-835-0407) is checking their records for me - 8/20/2007. This is the Lutheran church closest to the cemetery. | STALEY, Christian (I38548)

5430 | could this Joseph Buck who married Rachel Staley be the brother of Margaret Buck who married Rachel's brother Reuben Staley????? Birth: Dec. 6, 1803 Wythe County Virginia, USA Death: Feb. 28, 1882 Monroe County Indiana, USA Note: The gravestone is Rachel's, Joseph was still living in 1870 and possibly in 1880, although the later census appearance raises questions because it lists him as divorced and his father from South Carolina. Some sources say he died in 1889. I'm sure he's buried near Rachel, but the -condition of her headstone makes the possible loss of any marker for Joseph no surprise. ---------- Joseph was born Dec.6,1803 in Wythe Co., VA. 5433 | Courier Express - 1935 Courier-Express Niagara Falls Bureau Niagara Falls, Feb. 23—Next time you lift your glass to sing a toast to the Schnitzelbank, let it be to one of the "species" still doing duty on the Lockport Road farm of Supervisor Andrew R. Laur of the Town of Niagara. For everyone in the room with you will be able to join in a shouted and emphatic "Ja, das ist eine Schnit zelbank," for this sturdy old shaving stool has done service for 120 years. Abraham Wilmer, grandfather of Mrs. Lauer, constructed this vise in 1815 after arriving in the Lockport Road area. He followed the tradi tional pattern of thc:c built by car penters in Germany since about tne seventeenth century. It has survived the advent of the lathe, so far as those who have followed Abe Wil mer are concerned. Managed by a foot pedp'., the up per arm grips firmly the wood on which the workman is whittling with a draw-knife. From the blocks that the Witmer-Laur schitzelbank has clung onto have come axe handles, chair rungs, table legs, wagon tongues, handles for shovels and many other articles. All these pro ducts defy comparison with ma chine-made counterparts. Supervisor Laur used it in mak ing a gavel which he presented to County Judge William A. Gold re cently. That schnitzelbanking shall not become a lost art in the Laur house hold, the jovial supervisor is dilli gently training his nephew, John Laur, in the art, and John, It may be said to his credit, responds with a foot and arm action that would make any schnitzelbank content. | LAUR, Johann Vitus (I9189)
