Maerten , 86, a longtime Sanborn resident who moved here three years ago, died Friday (April 11, 2003) in Lockport Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Maerten was born Evelyn Witkop in Lewiston. She graduated from Niagara Falls High School. She worked for 15 years as an assembly worker in the Wurlitzer Co. plant, North Tonawanda. Mrs. Maerten was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, North Tonawanda, where she belonged to the Ladies Aid Society, the Lutheran Service Society and the Parent-Teacher League. She was also a member of the Friendship Club in Sanborn. Her husband of 49 years, Philip E., died in 1991. Survivors include a son, Gary Sr. of Lockport; a daughter, Beverly Zdrojewski of Hartland; two brothers, Robert Witkop and James Witkop, both of North Tonawanda; a sister, Edith Strothmann of Sanborn; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Kenneth Witkop of 3842 Lockport Road was pronounced dead at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center about 2:30 p.m. by county coroner Oscar Bell. State troopers from the Wrights Corners substation said Witkop's car was northbound when he apparently collapsed at the wheel. The car left the roadway and ran into a ditch before coming to a stop on the lawn of the Stuart Ford home, 6663 Ward Road. ALSO North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/5/1974 WITKOP - Kenneth C. He was a charter member of Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, and a charter member of the Shawnee Volunteer Fire Company and its Benevolent Association. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Norma R. Masters; a son, Duane of North Tonawanda; two daughters, Rita Warszawski of North Tonawanda and Joan Adams of Niagara Falls; two brothers, James and Robert, both of North Tonawanda; and two sisters, Evelyn Maerten and Edith Strothmann. In 1985 Elmer wrote the following: I went to school until I was 16 then I worked for my father as a truck driver. After marriage I drove a passenger bus for a couple of years- 1926-28 between Toronto & London. I worked in a garage as a motor mechanic for four years & then was laid off for five years. After that I got a job at the post office and worked there for 34 years. I have been retired for 15 years. We miss getting a card from your parents. We stopped in to see them in 1981.
