7204 | Had 65th wedding anniversary in 2008 Alfred L. Hewitt, 96, departed this life on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at his residence, while in the presence of his loving family. Born on December 20, 1922 in Lewiston, NY, he was the son of the late Alan and Lena (Laur) Hewitt. On January 1, 1943, he married the former Lola McGee in Niagara Falls, NY. She predeceased him on January 29, 2009. Al, as he was known to family and friends, was a lifelong area resident and graduated from LaSalle High School. He proudly served in the United States Army, during World War II, from January 14, 1943 until his honorable discharge on December 28, 1945. For 34 years, Al was employed as an Area Foreman for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, until he retired in 1982. He, a child of God, was a congregant of Payne Avenue Christian Church and a member of Niagara Frontier Country Club. Al enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, gardening and square dancing. Al is survived by daughters, Barbara (Peter) Baker, Linda (Greg) Mikolajek, Marjorie (Larry) Minor and Bonnie (Jim) Sands; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers, Gerald (late Rose) Hewitt, Richard (late Lynn) Hewitt, Kenneth (late Ruth) Hewitt, Donald (late Betty) Hewitt and Harold Hewitt. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. in the Chapel of OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY, where a funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4th at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Fleming officiating. Berean, Hamburg civic leader who died suddenly last Thursday while visiting a sister in Cleveland, was buried in Prospect Lawn Cemetery Saturday following private services at her home, 171 Union Street. Rev. William T. Brown, pastor of Lake Street Presbyterian Church, officiated. A guest of her sister, Mrs. Mercedes Stephens of Cleveland, for three weeks, Mrs. Berean planned to leave for Hamburg Friday evening. The previous night she suf- fered a heart attack from which she did not recover. She was 62 Mrs Berean was long prominent In civic activities here. She was an organizer and former president of the Hamburg Garden Club, a member of the Unitarian Alliance, of the Hamburg group of Erie County League of Women Voters, and the Women's Society of Lake Street Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Berean was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Margaret Hurley of 47 Bidwell Parkway, Buffalo. She was a graduate of St. Mary's College, South Bend, Ind. In 1902 she married Mr. Berean and nine years later the couple moved to Hamburg. Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons, John and Horace Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Wyckoff and Miss Alice Berean, all of Hamburg; one brother, Charles Rymond Hurley of Buffalo; two sisters, Mrs. Stevens and Sister Superior M. 7218 | Hamburg NY Erie County Independent - 9/1930 A beautiful wedding was solemniz- ed at 6.30 p. m. when Miss Margaret Elizabeth Berean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace G. Berean, became the bride of Paul Dygert Wyckoff of Albany, Ga. The garden of the Berean home, In Hamburg, furnished an artistic spot for the ceremony, which was performed before a background of evergreens, on either side of which were tall vases of garden flowers. The Rev. Frank O. Leonard officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, was beautifully gowned hi ivory satin, the bodice, fitted to the figure at the high waistline by deft touches of shirring, had a plain oval neckline and long tight sleeves. The skirt was very long and flaring and a wide band at the hips, coming to a point in front, formed the long train. Her long tulle veil was fastened to a lace cap, which a as edged with orange blossoms at the back. She wore white moire slippers and carried a lovely bouquet of white roses, Illy of the valley, sweet peas and orchids. Miss Mary Alice Berean, sister of the bride was maid of honor and her only attendant. She wore a gown of turquoise blue crepe with a tight bodice, having an oval neckline mode low at the back and bordered with ecru lace. The skirt was long e.nd cut on circular lines and she wore beige slippers and can-led a bouquet cf mixed summer flowers. Willis D. Cuddeback was best man and the ushers were John H. Berean, Horace G. Berean Jr., and Charles L. Kilborne. A wedding reception was held immediately after the ceremony in the garden. Mrs. Berean, mother of the bride ,wore a distinctive model of black chiffon velvet made on long lines, the skirt paneled and the straight bodice having a yoke studded with ma.rcasite. She wore a narrow belt of the velvet at the high waisteline and black moire slippers. Mrs. Wyckoff, mother of the groom, was wearing a gown of black lace made in the new mode and fashioned on lines of ride simplicity. Anner, of Rosewood Terr., Lake View, a retired dairy farm inspector for the New York State Department of Health, who died Sept. 12 in his 89th year. The Rev. Howard J. Landes, pastor of Lake View Congregational Church, officiated with burial in Lakeside Memorial Park. In 1923 Mr. Anner was employed by the City of Buffalo Health Department and served most of his 33-year career as an inspector for that agency which was later taken over by the county. At the time of his retirement in 1956 he was inspecting milk-producing farms throughout Erie County. 7242 | Hamburg NY Sun - 4/21/1988 News has been received here on the death of Norman C. Bremer, age 90, of Ithaca, who died in Lakeside Nursing Home there, April 7. 1988. A native of Brocton, Mr. Bremer spent his school years in Dunkirk, moving to Ithaca as a member of Ted Weem's band. He was chief engineer at Morse Chain Co. for 30 years and director of Research and Development at the time of his retirement in 1962. He was the designer of the Hi-Vo chain drive now used around the world on front-wheel automotive drives. Over the course of his life, he was granted 23 U.S. patents. Mr. Bremer is survived by two daughters, Arden M. and Beverly A. Bremer, both of Ithaca; a brother Lloyd W. of Upper Nyack; three grandchildren; a niece, Wendy Ciliberti of Amherst; and a nephew, Craig Fattey of Hamburg. He was predeceased by his wife, Mae Bremer, who died in 1978; and a brother, Howard F. (Helene) of Hamburg. Mr. Bremer was a frequent visitor to Hamburg and had relatives and many friends here. Floyd Hess Funeral Home in Main St. for Everett Lloyd Bennett of Long Ave., senior unemployment insurance referee for the New Ycrk State Labor Dept., who died May 11 in his 69th year. The Rev. Allen G. Skiff, pastor of Hamburg U n i t e d Methodist Church, officiated with burial in Acacia Park Cemetery. Mr. Bennett became a Buffalobased referee in the labor Dept. in 1945 and was promoted to senior referee in 1947. Earlier in his 40-year legal career with the state, Mr. Bennett was a supervisor of vocational rehabilitation in the Education Dept's. Buffalo office from 1930 to 1945. Before becoming a state employee, Mr. Bennett had been engaged in an individual practice of law in Buffalo for three years in the 1920's. A native of Bridgeton, N. J., Mr. Bennett was a 1920 graduate of Lafayette High School, Buffalo and in 1924 earned a bachelor of arts degree from Cornell University. He then entered the University of Buffalo where he earned a master's degree in education and a doctor of jurisprudence degree. Active in Boy Scouting, Mr. Bennett had been a leader and a committeeman of Explorer Troop 509, Hamburg. He was honored with the Order of the Arrow Award. He also was a charter member and a former commodore of the Hamburg Power Squadron and had instructed several classes in boating. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Hamburg United Methodist Church where he served as an usher. He also was a member of the New York State Bar Assn. Mr. Bennett leaves his wife, the former Margaret Ashby, two sons, Richard L. and Paul H. Bennett, a daughter, Mrs. Eric Benzin and nine grandchildren.
