CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT FAMILY HOME IN TUSCARORA ROAD
Christian F. Wittcopp Changed Spelling of Name in Order to Enlist.
Christian F. Wittcopp, 81 years old, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans of the town of Niagara, died Saturday afternoon at the family home in the Tuscarora road. Funeral services will be held from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Edward Graubau (sic), of the Walmore church, will officiate. Interment will be in Shawnee cemetery.
At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Wittcopp tried to enlist on several occasions but each time was told that he was too young. He was a large boy for his age and finally decided to conceal his identity by changing the spelling of his name and his address. The name was originally spelled Wittkopp but he changed the "k" to a "c" and told the recruiting officer he came from Canada. He had retained the changed spelling of his name ever since. He enlisted in Company H. 20th, Regiment, U. S. Infantry, and soon became a corporal. He participated in many engagements and at the close of the war was given an honorable discharge. He is survived by three sons, Albert, of Cambria; Henry, of Bergholtz, and Philip, of the town of Niagara; and three daughters, Mrs. William Camann, of Niagara. Falls; Mrs. William Schultz, of North Tonawanda, and Miss Estelle Wittcopp, of the Tuscarora road, with whom he made his home.

7669 In late October, 2023 Charles Livingston ("Livy") Banta passed away from natural causes at his residence in Lockport, NY. He was just shy of his 55th birthday on November 1st. Livy attended Ridley College boarding school in Ontario, Canada and Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He was an excellent tennis player and a very intelligent observer of the human condition. With his wry and lively sense of humor, he brought goodwill and good cheer to his circle of close friends. A lover of classical music and fan of specific film scores he found a favorite café at Spot Coffee where he shared many happy moments with his grandfather, Charlie Banta. Later in life Livy bravely confronted numerous medical challenges and never ceased to try to make positive connections with his family. The son of Charles Banta and Wendy Hyde, Livy is survived by his father, his uncles, George and Edward Hyde, Philip Banta, his aunt, Melissa Banta, as well as his half-brother and sister Peter and Halley Andres. 7671 In Memoriam: Earl Lorne Palmer Kostuk (1928 - 2024)
Niagara Falls, NY - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Earl Lorne Palmer Kostuk, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left this world on January 5, 2024. Earl's legacy is etched into the fabric of Western New York, where he played an instrumental role in shaping both the construction landscape and the hearts of those who knew him.
Born in Niagara Falls in 1928, Earl attended Trott Vocational High School, where his athletic prowess became evident. His talent on the football field earned him the moniker "triple threat," showcasing his remarkable athleticism and dedication to excellence.
Earl's commitment to service led him to the military, where he served with honor during the Korean War. His dedication to duty mirrored the same steadfastness that he carried into every facet of his life.
Professionally, Earl distinguished himself as a superintendent for Sevenson, where he led some of the largest construction projects in Western New York over his 50+ year tenure with the company. His decades-long tenure was marked by a relentless work ethic, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and peers.
Despite his quiet demeanor, Earl possessed a commanding presence and a kind, gentle spirit. His dry sense of humor brought laughter to those fortunate enough to share his company, creating a warmth that will be dearly missed.
Earl's greatest accomplishment was undoubtedly his 69-year marriage to his beloved wife, Chris Kostuk. Their enduring partnership was a testament to the power of love, commitment, and shared laughter. Together, they navigated the journey of life, building a family and legacy that transcends generations.
In addition to his wife, Earl is survived by his daughters Kathleen (Jeffrey) Kostuk Kumm, Carrie (John) Kostuk King, and son Wayne (Angela) Kostuk. His 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life, and he cherished the moments spent with each one.  Over many years, he patiently enjoyed watching hours of piano and dance recitals as well as a hefty dose of youth hockey and football games, always beaming with pride.
Summer days at the family cottage on the Grand River in Canada were filled with laughter as Earl patiently taught numerous nieces and nephews the art of water skiing and tubing. In the winter, his dedication knew no bounds as he spent countless hours shoveling snow off the river and ensuring that every ice skate was perfectly tightened for family skating excursions.
As we bid farewell to Earl Lorne Palmer Kostuk, let us remember the legacy of a man who left an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew him. May his kindness, humor, and unwavering love continue to inspire us as we carry his memory forward. Earl's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to call him family and friend.
In accordance to Mr. Kostuk’s wishes, private funeral services and interment will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to The Lotus Flower Giving Society at lotusflowergivingsociety.org/donate/.

Niagara Gazette - 12/11/1878

John Cretsinger, a wealthy farmer,
sixty-five years of age, residing near
Sulphur Springs, four miles west of the
city of Lockport, committed suicide Monday
morning by shooting himself with a
revolver. Cretsinger is said to have
been mentally unsound for some tfrne,
and the fatal act was probably committed
while the unfortunate man was laboring
under temporary insanity. The
Lockport Union of Monday gives the
following particulars of the affair:
Last night about five o'clock he started
from home, saying he was going to call
on Ins son, who lived near. He not returning
home, inquiry was made, when
it was learned that he had not visited
his son. The family dog was then put
on the track ot the missing man, when
ho was found in a piece of woods be.
tween 4 and 5 o'clock this morning. His
son came up to him and put his hand
ou his father s shoulder to detain him,
when, without warning, the old gentleman
turned and discharged a revolver at
his son, but fortunately missed him.
Mr. Cretsinger then suddenly placed the
weapon against his own person and fired.
He sank to the ground and expired in
about ten' minutes. - A messenger was
dispatched at once for Dr. Kittenger,
who found that' the ball had entered at
the base of the sternum and undoubtedly
ruptured some of the large arteries of the
heart. Deceased leaves a wlfe and three
grown up children.
