8451 | July 26, 2012 Margaret Roggow The Tonawanda News SEQUIM, WA — Margaret passed away at home in Sequim, Washington, while under the care of loved ones and hospice. On July 1st, Margaret was getting on her electric scooter to go to the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center's (SARC) pool when she suffered a stroke. A few days prior, she was making plans for Christmas. She was a remarkable woman with a positive attitude and an active, independent lifestyle which inspired all who knew her. She would be disappointed to have missed her 100-1/2 year birthday by six days. Margaret lived a rich life filled with family, friends and adventure. Born to James Farrow and Elizabeth Bedinger Brugh, Margaret grew up on the family farm in Montvale, Virginia with her five siblings. She received her Bachelor of Arts in physical education from Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia. She taught physical education and science in Montgomery, West Virginia where she met her future husband, Norman "Doc" Roggow. She and Norm moved to North Tonawanda, New York in 1939. They lived there for over 50 years working and raising a family. For many summers, Margaret and Norm worked at Camp Pathfinder, a rustic, private boy's camp in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Margaret loved Pathfinder and during many of her 50 summers she taught rowing. After retirement in 1970, Margaret and Norm traveled extensively throughout six continents. Norm developed Alzheimer's and Margaret spent over 12 years caring for him until his death in 1993. In 1998, she moved with her daughter and son-in-law to Sequim, Washington. Margaret was a "regular" at the SARC. She rode "her" stationary bicycle, did water exercises, and enjoyed the steam room, hot tub, and socializing with friends. She was a role model for "aging gracefully." She played pinochle several times a week with groups from the Sequim and Port Angeles Senior Centers. In addition she enjoyed reading novels, playing penny slots at casinos, going to Costco, eating at buffets, doing jig-saw puzzles, watching "Judge Judy" and spending time with family. Her mental, physical, and social activity kept her "forever young!" Family was the most important thing to Margaret. In August 2011, her family held a "Celebration of Life" in Sequim, recognizing her nearly 100 years. In attendance were over 70 relatives and friends from across the US, Canada, as well as many friends from the Sequim area. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Valerie Grier (husband, Terry) of Sequim, Washington; her son, Robert Roggow (wife, Diane) of Longmont, Colorado; her sister, Betty Anne Glass (husband, Harold) of Roanoke, Virginia; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. At Margaret's request, there will be no service. She felt her memorial service was held last August and she was happy to be alive for it. Her ashes are divided and will be buried next to her husband in North Tonawanda, New York, at Camp Pathfinder, Ontario, Canada, and at her childhood home in Virginia. Margaret will be remembered for the inspiration she was to all who knew her and for her cheerfulness, kindness, sense of humor, love, and acceptance she displayed towards others. Margaret requested any donations be sent to: The Sequim Senior Activity Center, P.O. Box 1827, Sequim, Washington 98382. 8455 | July 26, 2013 Elizabeth Volansky Anonymous The Tonawanda News The Tonawanda News Fri Jul 26, 2013, 11:15 AM EDT TONAWANDA — Elizabeth "Betty" Anne (nee Baumgartner) Volansky passed on Thursday, July 25, 2013, after a brief and courageous struggle with brain cancer. Betty was the beloved wife of Paul M. Volansky, Sr. for 54 years until his death in 1994. She was the loving and loved mother of Paul M. (Linda Desiderio) Volansky, Jr. and Mary Ellen (Coleen Hisey) Volansky; grandmother of Melissa (Shapleigh Smith) Volansky, Andrew C. (Jennifer Hull) Volansky, Paul M. Volansky III and Michael P. Volansky; and great-grandmother of Elijah and Mia Smith and Tucker and Jaxson Volansky; and aunt to many nieces and nephews . . .we were all her favorites. Betty was preceded in passing by her parents, Anton and Magdalena (nee Hyberger) Baumgartner; four siblings, Lena Papp, Barb Leber, Annie Choboy Berringer and Joseph "Zep" Baumgartner, as well as their spouses; and a nephew, Robert "Bobby" Papp. Betty worked with skill and pride in all she did, whether she was cooking great meals, managing her household, creating the next blanket or framed needlepoint, catching the largest and or the most fish, or working outside the home. Betty fished for 25 years on the Lakes of Kipawa, Canada. After Mom and Dad's retirement they moved to Florida for 18 years. She resumed fishing in her mid-80s alongside her son Paul and his family, returning to the same area of lakes. Betty was an avid card player and played with such enthusiasm that we who knew her in Oregon designed and named a card game after her called "Buffalo Betty". Travel was also on her list of to-dos. One of her favorites was her trip to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (where Paul Sr. had visited while stationed in France during WWII). This visit to Notre Dame was on her 80th birthday, February 29, 2000. On this trip, she also visited the country of her parents' origin, an area of Hungary now called Romania, and their church. Betty was a life-long member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Tonawanda, and a graduate of their elementary school. Mom's residence at the time of her brief illness was the Kibler Apartments, which had been her high school in the 1930s. We cherish and thank her for the many tangible and intangible gifts that she gave to us, including being an impressive role model all the way through her last illness. Mom, we know you worked hard, played with enthusiasm and struggled with grace. We love and miss you. The family will receive friends from 2-5 PM on Sunday only at the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 37 Adam Street at Seymour, in Tonawanda. 8498 | July 9, 2013 Jeffrey D. Witkop Niagara Gazette ROCHESTER — On July 7, 2013, I passed from the land of the dying into the land of the truly living. Heaven is now my home and there is no more sorrow, no more grief, no more tears. When you read this, I will already be enjoying eternal life with my Lord and Savior Jesus. However, as I write these words I grieve about leaving my loved ones behind. They include my beloved wife of 34 years, Dawn (Henry) Witkop, who has been my rock, along with my dear son and daughter, Adam Witkop, and Kristen Witkop. I also leave behind much loved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law along with numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews. I will skip the part where I list all of my life's accomplishments because they don't mean much after death. In fact, they don't mean much now as I type these words. Instead I will share with you something of the utmost importance. Life is indeed short and no one knows when their time here will be up. It is my prayer that you won't face death without knowing Jesus. The Bible states that the wages of sin is death. We are all sinners and would be condemned to an eternity in Hell if it weren't for Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God and was sent to Earth to take the just punishment for our sin as our substitute. He rose from the dead to show His victory over sin and death. To be forgiven, all we have to do is accept Jesus as our Savior. Jesus did the rest. For more information about Jeffrey, visit www.aliferemembered.com. Calling hours will be held from 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM on Thursday, July 11th at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane, Rochester (between Rte. 390 & Long Pond Rd.)
