He was born in the Town of Royalton, NY, October 15, 1917, the son of Leon and Edna [Pearson] Church. Mr. Church was employed at the Wurlitzer Company, for 44 year, retiring in 1979 and with the Town of Lewiston, Highway Department, for five years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sanborn, the Sanbornites, an exempt member of the Pekin Fire Co. and also a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Mr. Church was the husband of the late Frances [Wyman] Church, who died in April of 2003. He is survived by two sons Ray L. (Cathy) Church of Nashville, TN and James W. (Donna) Church of Pekin, one daughter Helen L. (Bob) Schimshack of the Town of Wheatfield, also survived by 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Lockport, NY on March 25, 1938, son of the late Kenneth and Mary Otis Hesch. Dick graduated from DeSales High School and is a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Parish. He was past president of the Newfane Lions Club, member of the Lockport Elks and Miller Hose Fire Co. Dick was an avid golfer and was a member at Oak Run Golf Course. 8753 | Kenneth R. Edwards, age 95 of Youngstown died Wednesday November 22, 2017 in the Northgate Health Care Facility in the Town of Wheatfield after a short illness. Ken was born May 7, 1922 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Kenneth W. and Helen (Grome) Edwards and has been a resident of Youngstown since 1972. He worked at the former Certain-Teed Co. before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 16, 1942. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on January 25, 1946. Ken had participated in the invasion of Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands with the 4th Marine Division, 5th Amphibious Corps, 15th Defense Battalion. He later served with the 12th Motor Transport and did a tour with the Occupation of Japan. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with one Battle Star, the Occupation of Japan, Victory, American Campaign and Good Conduct Ribbons. Ken was a Sign Painter employed by General Advertisers Service for 18 years. He then worked as a painter for the former Naval Air Station in Niagara Falls. As a member of the Marine Air Reserve, he served in the Air Intelligence Section. He also worked as a Graphics Illustrator with the 4621st Air Support Group Civilian Air Force. Ken then joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a member of the 914th Tactical Airlift Group serving as a Graphics Specialist. He retired on May 7, 1982 as a Tech Sergeant after a combined military career of 24 years both with the Marines and Air Force Reserves. He continued to work as a sign painter retiring in June 1987 from the Niagara State Parks and Recreation Commission. He was a life member of Lake Ontario V.F.W. Post 313 Youngstown for over 50 years. He served as past Commander. Ken was a life member of the V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids, MI; Erie Canal Chapter 40, 4th Marine Division Association; a communicant of St. Bernard's RC Church in Youngstown. He was an avid bowler and artist. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Leah (Wilkesmore) Edwards and is survived by five step daughters, Daneen (Robert) Muehlbauer of Niagara Falls, NY, Constance (Donald) Martin of Youngstown, Betty Jo (Richard) Profeta of Lewiston, Terry Smith of Newfane, and Lori (Wayne) Gordon of Ft. Mill, SC, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Edwards and a granddaughter, Patricia Forget. He was born on January 15, 1941 to the late Lewis and Lillian (Forsythe) Lum Ken had been employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Triad Pest Control and most recently retired from Falls Pest Control, of which he was the owner. He leaves to cherish his memory, his former wife Sarah Zappendorf, his three children: Theresa (John) Garner, Deborah (Tim) Swanson and Patrick Lum, three grandchildren: Cassandra Lum, Nicole Lum and Nathaniel Swanson and several nieces and nephews. 8755 | Kenneth W. Balling Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and patriarch of the Balling Family, Kenneth “Ken” W. Balling, 68, of Bear Lake, New York and Fort Pierce, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 23, 2024, in Florida. Ken grew up in North Tonawanda, New York and was a 1974 graduate of North Tonawanda High School, where he was a stellar football player and in his earlier years a State Champion wrestler. He continued his education, earning his Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University and his Master’s Degree from Cornell University. Ken began his professional career in 1980 at Cornell Cooperative Extension and worked directly with the 4-H program, contributing greatly to the program’s mission of helping young people reach their full potential. In 1985 Ken was the recipient of the New York State Conservation Educator of the Year Award. In 1995 Ken transitioned to a career in public education where he found his true calling. Ken taught technology at Cassadaga Valley Central School for twenty-three years, where he had a lasting impact on the lives of countless students, many of whom stayed in touch with him long after graduation. In addition to shaping lives in the classroom, Ken also helped mold the lives of numerous young athletes as a dedicated Football, Basketball and Softball coach. Ken will long be remembered for the way he passionately coached the varsity softball team, leading the team to much success and winning Coach of the Year honors numerous times. Ken greatly believed in giving back to his community and spent nearly 50 years answering calls to duty as a Volunteer Firefighter, with the Gratwick House Fire Company and the Stockton Volunteer Fire Company. Ken also spent many years as a Director on the Chautauqua County Fair board. Ken was also a dedicated member of the Roman Catholic Church and lived his life based on unwavering faith in God. After retiring, Ken did what he loved most, spending time with his many, many friends and family and enjoying the outdoors! Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman and could often be found enjoying one of his favorite places, “West Valley,” where he passed down his love of the outdoors to his family and friends and created memories that will last a lifetime. Kenneth W. Balling is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Maryann Harris Balling, and his daughter, Amanda (Matthew) Schwartz and his son, Daniel (Ashley) Balling. He cherished his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren, Clare Mary Schwartz (his favorite softball player), Charlie Kenneth Balling (his favorite hunting buddy), William Kenneth Schwartz (his favorite building partner), Avery Christine Balling (his spirit animal), and Jack James Balling (his favorite fishing buddy). He is also survived by his cherished siblings, sisters, Jean (Charles) Ryan, Joan (Gregory) Post, Deborah Balling; and many, many graduates of “Ken Balling’s College of Knowledge,” including his loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 8758 | Kenneth William Crewe, age 79, passed away on February 18, 2025, under the care of Niagara Hospice in Wheatfield, NY. Ken was born on June 25, 1945 in Niagara Falls, NY, the oldest son of the late, William Henry and Mildred Grace (nee Buttery) Crewe. He attended kindergarten and first grade at the Fort Niagara School, the red brick school in Youngstown and Lewiston-Porter. Ken also attended School in Niagara Falls until his 16th birthday. Ken was employed by the Niagara Wheatfield Central School district as a Janitor for 26 years before he retired. He also played the role of Santa Clause for his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ken was a member of the Ransomville Rural Retiree’s and enjoyed attending their monthly meetings, going on trips with members, the Erie Canal Boat Ride and the Attica Railroad Fall Foilage Train ride. He loved to play bingo on Saturday nights with is sister Grace, niece Diane and his cousins Peggy and Chuck Leone, they even took him to the Ransomville Race Track on Friday nights. Besides his parents, Ken was also predeceased by sisters, Charlene Crewe, Evelyn Gilmer, Linda St. Cyr and brother Russell H. Crewe. Kenny graduated from Trott Vocational High School and attended several trade schools. Kenny was a maintenance Supervisor for Niagara Wheatfield School District retiring in 1994. He was a “jack of all trades “ in accomplishing domestic repairs and renovations, he enjoyed tinkering with many projects as he was able to repair anything with his vast vocational experiences. Kenny was an avid fisherman, golfer and bowler but most of all, loved being around his family. Bom June 4, 1930 in New Orleans, LA, he was the son of Julian and Marjorie (Kent) Saenger. Kent graduated from Kemper Military School in Missouri in 1949, and served proudly in the US Air Force as a 1st Lt. from 1954 to 1962. He met the love of his life Joan at a church picnic. He proposed marriage five days later! They enjoyed their military life at the Niagara Falls Air Base during their early years together. He worked for Harrison Radiator Division GM in Lockport for just shy of 30 years retiring in the 1991. Kent was a life-long member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.. Kent and Joan traveled throughout the United States and to several European Countries. Joan predeceased him June 9, 2022 after 64 years of marriage. Kent is survived by three wonderful children: Christopher (Irene) Crea, Barry (Aurora) Crea, and Katherine (Barry) Kibbe. Kevin graduated from Niagara Falls High School and earned his Bachelor's degree from Buffalo State College. He retired from Laborer's Local 91 after many years of dedicated service. Kevin was an excellent athlete, which began at an early age competing in youth baseball and football. He continued to play softball and was an avid golfer. In addition, he was an outstanding pool player, winning over 186 city championships throughout Western New York and Canada. Kevin formerly coached his kids' soccer and baseball teams, sharing his love for sports with the next generation. A jack of all trades, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to family members and friends. Above all, Kevin cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren. 8768 | Kevin J. Stack, 82, of Youngstown, N.Y., passed away peacefully at the Niagara Hospice House on Friday afternoon, December 15, 2023. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., he was the son of the late Niagara Falls Fire Fighter Emmett J. and Genevieve L. (Orszulak) Stack. Kevin graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1960 and enlisted in the United States Marines. He proudly served as a sergeant and was a decorated Expert Rifleman until his honorable discharge in 1969. On June 13, 1964, he married his beloved wife, Rose Marie (Friona) Stack at St. Joseph’s Church in Niagara Falls and moved to Youngstown in 1979. Kevin was employed at the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office for over 27 years, beginning as a guard in the county jail and progressing through the top rank of road patrol supervision. He retired as an investigator in the Welfare Fraud Unit of the Sheriff’s Department on December 29, 1998. Prior to his career as a Sheriff’s Deputy, Kevin worked at International Paper Co. , Albert Elia Building Company, Friona Brother’s Trucking Company, and for the Bell Aerospace Test Center. Kevin was a long-time member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Knights of Columbus #247. He was a devout Catholic, serving as a long-time usher at St. Joseph’s Church and as a current parishioner of St. Bernard’s Church. As an avid outdoorsman, Kevin loved shooting, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed coin collecting, woodworking, and playing golf as a long-time member of Niagara Frontier Country Club. Above all, Kevin enjoyed spending time with his loving family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by his children, Maura Stack-Duge (Ken), John Stack, Garrett Stack, Kevin (Tamar) Stack and Thomas (Lisa) Stack; several cherished grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his older brothers, Bernard E. (late Ann Marie) (Barbara) Stack, Gerald F. (Kirsten) Stack and his infant brother, Paul Stack. Kim grew up in Niagara Falls, New York and was a resident of Lockport, New York at the time of passing. She worked as a retail merchandiser with the bulk of her career spent working for Gap Inc. Kim lived for her family and friends. She always said that her "purpose in life" was to raise her girls and she did so her entire life. Kim absolutely loved attending any family event, especially the Granieri Family Picnic and Conahan Family Reunion. Kim built lifelong friendships with many. She found any reason to entertain, pull out her antique glasses, and spend time with life-long friends, the neighborhood crew and her YaYa's. Kim loved gardening, shopping, garage sales, taking pictures and planning events. Most of all, Kim passionately loved traveling with her friends and family. Kim was married to Matthew Barmasse and was the proud mother of her four children, Kiele, Hailey, Miller and Matthew, who died at birth. Judge Philip J. Weiss of Genesee County Court Monday sentenced Howard C. Roggow, 52, on a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter. 8790 | Kingston NY Daily Freeman - 11/16/1959 Mrs. Adelaide Borth Gaise, 85, mother of the Rev. David C. Gaise, DD, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, died Saturday. Mrs. Gaise, a former resident of Niagara Falls, had made her home at the Lutheran Church Home, Buffalo, since the death of her husband, Charles D. Gaise, in May. She was a devout and faithful member, of the Zion Lutheran Church, Niagara Falls, and an active member of- the Women's Missionary Society of the church. Besides her son, she Is survived by two granddaughters. Carol of Staten Island and Jean of Kingston, and two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Boehner and, Mrs. Fred Knaisch, both of Buffalo Several nieces and nephews also survive. 8795 | Kingston NY Daily Freeman - 12/13/1962 LYNDONVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Herbert Bane, a 13-year-old orphan, was killed Thursday when a rifle discharged as he and his brother handled it. police said. Herbert and his brother. Robert, 15, were playing with the 22-caliber rifle in the home of an uncle, Keith Bane, in this Orleans County village. The boys and their five brothers and sisters had been living with the uncle since their parents were killed in an automobile accident near here in 1953, police said. ALSO Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 12/14/1962 LYNDONVILLE - A 13-yearold Town of Yates boy, one of eight children left without parents as the result of an auto accident, in 1953, was accidentally shot and killed Thursday afternoon by his 15-year-old brother. Pronounced dead at Medina Memorial Hospital was Herbert Bane of Marshall Road, Town of Yates, about four miles west of here. Dr. James Sterling, an Orleans County coroner, termed the shooting "accidental." According to the Orleans County Sheriffs Department, the dead youth and a brother, Robert, returned home on a school bus shortly after 4 p.m. After eating, they went upstairs to their room. Robert, according to deputies, was preparing to remove a cartidge from a .22 caliber rifle when the weapon discharged. The shell struck Herbert in the face. A sister heard the shot and called police. Herbert had been living at the home of his uncle and grandmother, Keith Bane and Mrs. Clara Bane, since th e death of his parents in 1953. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bane were killed in an Orleans County auto accident. The youth was a seventh-grader at Lyndonville Central School and a member of the Yates Baptist Church. He was born in Lockport on April 22, 1949. Surviving besides his uncle and grandmother are three brothers, Pfc. Howard Bane of the United States Marine Corps, Camp Le- jeune, N.C., Pfc. Arnold Bane of the United States Army in Germany, and Robert Bane; three sisters, Miss Clara Bane, Miss Loretta Bane and Miss Shirley Bane, all at home, and a halfbrother, Harold Tanner of Sodus. 8799 | Kingston NY Daily Freeman - 6/9/1942 Alfred Best Budd, four-year-old son of Mr and Mrs. Ivan Budd of Philipsport, was fatally injured in front of the Budd home Sunday and Dorothea Little, 27, of Ellen- ville, operator of the auto which hit the child, was arrested on a charge of assaunt with an automo- bile and for having inadequate brakes. The infant, playing with his older brother, Harley, ran into the road in front of the car operated by Mrs. Little, who was on her way to Horton Memorial Hospital to visit her husband. The lattes suffered a leg fracture several weeks ago in an accident at a shale bank in Summitville. Taken to the same hospital, the child died at 6:15 p. m. Sunday, about four hours after the acci- dent. Mrs. Little was released under $25 bail by Magistrate J. Eugene O'Gorman of wurtsboro State Troopers William Driscoll and C. W. Seymour and Vincent Faber announced after investigt- ing the accident tht the woman would be arraigned later on a criminal negigence charge as a re- sult of the death of the child. Besides his prents the child is survived by a brother, Harey;; his grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. Augusut Metdler, and an uncle, Theodore Metler, of Jackson Heights, L.I.
