9102 | Lockport NY Daily Journal - 3/19/1883 The marriage of an aged couple was performed Saturday afternoon on Bouck avenue near Niagara street, Black Rock. The participants are U R I A L DRIOGS, a respected citizen of Tonawauda, eighty-one years of age, and Mrs. BEDKLL, mother of OSSIAN B E D E L L , superintendent of the western division of the Erie Canal, who is seventy-five years old. This is Mr. DRIGGS' fourth wife, he having been left a widower three times. The bride and groom have known each other since childhood, but there was no interchange of sentiment before their first marriages,alt hough they were always veryfriendly. Mrs. Bedell and Mr. Driggs were both deprived of their- first spouses at about the same time, and a short courtship followed,but the widow then thought it best not t o marry s o soon after her husband death. The widower wedded again ami Mrs. Bedell lived on alone until yesterday. The groom having again become a marriageable man, the courtship was renewed and ripened into marriage. 9115 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal A veteran of World War I, Louis P.- Ball, 48, of 323 Prospect St.. died unexpectedly of a heart affliction at 3 o'clock Sunday morning in the Veterans' Center, Batavia, where he was taken on Saturday. Mr. Ball was born In Lockport. April 11, 1897, and was educated In St. Mary's Parochial School. He served with the infantry In the first World War. For a number of years he was employed by the Merrltt Engineering and Sales Company but for the past ten years had been an employe of the Carborundum Company in Niagara Falls. A member of B. Leo Dolan Post, 410, American Legion, and the 40 and 8. Mr. Ball also was a member of Lockport Aerie, 836, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Screwball Club. Surviving are his wife, Clara; e son, Ralph Edward Ball; a sister, Mrs. Harold Moore, and five brothers, Joseph, Jacob, Adam, John and Martin Ball, all of Lockport and vicinity. Services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 at the family home and at 9 o'clock at St. Anthony's Church Burial will be m Wright's Comers Cemetery. 9116 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal A young Newfane man. married only three weeks ago, died about 3 this morning (May 2, 1960) when the 1959 sports car he was driving missed a curve on Lockport ° Olcott Rd. north of Newfane. The auto plunged down an 80-foot embankment leading to Eighteen-Mile Creek. Dead is Keith C. Bassler, Dale Rd., Newfane. He would have observed his 26th birthday on May 20. His body was identified by his wife, the former Wanda Ruth Berndt, who was First at the scene after Trooper Joseph L. Lenahan discovered the wrecked car about 6 this morning. Mrs. Bassler stopped at the scene near the Newfane Conservation Club just north of the Village of Newfane limits to inquire if the trooper had seen her husband in a little red car. EARLIER REPORT She was told the car and her husband's body were down the embankment The trooper had patrolled toe area earlier after a report by Maurice Sprankle. Star Trailer Ct, Newfane, who told him "a car went over the embankment." The car was not visible from the road. On further investiga- tion, Tooper Lenahan found the wreckage. Mr. Bassler was driving a 1960 Austin-Healy convertible which the couple had bought recently. He left home about 10 Sunday evening. Trooper Lenahan reported the auto apparently "flew" off toe road after Mr. Bassler missed the curve. SHOWER WAS PLANNED The body and car were retrieved by service station employes and volunteer workers. Mr. Bassler had been employed as a scaler at the Niagara Power Project and previously worked on other consti uction jobs. The couple was married April 6 in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in the Rapids. Mrs. Bassler is the daughter of Mr. end Mrs. Herbert J. Berndt, 6725 Moyer Rd., Lockport. She was formerly an admissions clerk at Lockport Memorial Hospital. Hospital employes were planning a shower for her this evening. The couple had been living at the home of Mr. Bassler's pari. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bassler, Dale Rd. They had planned to move soon into a newly-purchased trailer. His mother passed the scene on me way to work in Lockport today, not knowing of her son's death. Coroner Dr. George H. Muscato Jr. pronounced Mr. Bassler dead at the scene. Mr. Bassler attended Newfane Central School, and served for a time In the Marine Corps in 1952. Trooper Frank Britt, who aided in the case, was a classmate of toe victim. Survivors besides his wife and parents include s sister, Mrs. Vera Bullard of Lockport. and two brothers. Friends are invited to attend. It was a simple but impressive ceremony which united in marriage Miss Mary E. Paul of Berry Brook, N.Y. and Hugh Benton. The ceremony was held at the home of the bride's sister.. Mrs. George Emory in Evansville, Wis. The bride and bridegroom had met at the Evansville Seminary which they both attended. The late Rev. C. A. Stoll officiated. Mrs. Emory, who now lives in Binghamton, N. Y., is present to in Barker to attend the celebration. The couple have five living children. They are Robert Benton of Barker, an engineer with the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors Corp. at Lockport; the Rev. Benson Benton, pastor of the Sanborn Methodist Church; Miss Sally Benton who teaches science in Philadelphia, Pa.; Paul Benton of North Tonawanda, Sylvania Corp. draftsman; and John Benton of Lockport, with IBM in Buffalo. Another son. William, was the victim of an automobile accident four years ago. They also have 14 grandchildren. A farmer in the Wilson area all his life, Mr. Hausman was born May 23, 1888, on the Ide Rd.. Wilson, the son of the late John and Rachel Dobertean Hausman. She was the widow of C. B. Foster. Mr. and Mrs Foster formerly operated the C. B, Foster Hardware company here until Mr. Foster died In 1933. Mrs. Foster then continued to operate the business until she retired two years ago. Mrs. Foster was born In the Town of Wilson, December 30. 1879, and was a graduate of the Wilson high school and the Wilson training class. She taught school In the area for ten years previous to her marriage. She was an active member and past patron of Ransomville Chapter 374, Order of Eastern Star, and served as Its secretary for 19 years. 8he was a member of the Order of the Amaranth, Niagara Falls, and the lebanon White Shrine, Buffalo. She formerly served as treasurer of the Ransomville school for many years. She was a member of Niagara Rebekah Lodge, Youngstown, the Ladies Auxiliary, Ransomville Fire company, and the Ransomville Baptist church. The OES will conduct special services at the Foster home tonight at 9 o'clock. The house was decorated throughout In gold and white and many gift bouquets. Mrs. Brockman, wearing black satin trimmed with purple georgette, was assisted in receiving by her granddaughter, Miss Viola Kagels who was gowned in white trimmed with gold. The music tor dancing was furalahed by Smith's orchestra, and at 1:30 p. m., a five course dinner was served to sixty-eight guests, twelve being seated at the bride's table which was cantered with a large gold and whits wadding cake. Mr. and Mrs. Brockman who was married in Wilton In 1876 by the Rev. Vlnebarr, have always lived In Niagara County and received many handsome gifts, a purse of gold and good wishes for many more happy anniversaries. Niagara Falls, after a long illness, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Otto Rendanz funeral home, Michigan avenue and Tenth street, Niagara Falls. The body will be brought here for burial. Mr. Boehnke was born in Germany and came to the United States 50 years ago. He lived in Lockport a number of years and worked in the paper mills.
