9701 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 2/15/1956 Appleton couple's trip to Florida was cut short by tragedy Tuesday afternoon when a head-on collision in Virginia Instantly killed Mrs. Lena B. Eaton, 77, and injured her husband, former owner of a Lockport con- struction firm; their niece; and a Genev couple riding in the other car. The injured, all admitted to the University of Virginia Hospital at Charlottesville, Va., and their injuries and conditions are: William B. Eaton, 75, of the Hosmer Road, fractured leg, fractured nose and facial lacerations, in satisfactory condition. Mrs. Marion Hetherly. 61, of Buffalo, niece of the Eatons, multiple abrasions, condition satisfactory. Melvln E. Price, 37, Geneva, fractured right leg, condition satisfactory. Mrs. Ellen Price, 36. fractured right hip, condition fair. The fatal accident occurred on U. S. Route 15, ten miles south of Culpeper, a county-seat town in northern Virginia. According to reports from Virginia state police, who were still investigating the mishap today, the Eaton car waa traveling south on the four-lane macadam highway. The Genevans' car, driven by Mr. Price and traveling north, swerved into the path of the Eaton's machine. DRIVER LOST CONTROL Mr. Price told troopers that he lost control of his vehicle. He said he was not trying to pass a truck in front of his car. The road was dry at the time of the accident. Two sons of the Appleton couple, Harold H. of Lockport and Jesse B. of Newfane, are in Charlottesville today, having left Toesday evening when they heard of the accident. It is believed that the Prices were returning north after a vacation in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Eaton had customarily visited Florida during the winter since Mr. Eaton retired about five years ago from active affiliation with the W. B. Eaton Construction Co FORMER TEACHER Mrs. Eaton, a native of Niagara County, was a school teacher before her marriage. The former Lena Brownell, she and Mr. Eat* on were married Sept 3, 1902. She was a member of the West Somerset Baptist Church and of the Logos League Sunday School Class. Besides Harold and Jesse, she is survived by three others sons, W. Ralph of Newfane; Donald B. and Arthur T., both of Appleton; two daughters, Mrs. Donald Truesdell, Appleton, and Mrs. William Wilson, Newfane; several brothers and sisters; and 21 grandchil- dren. A complication of diseases, from which he had been suffering for some time, caused his death. He was 52 years old. He leaves a wife. Mary T. Ball, and two sons, Lawrence E at home, and Rollin T., of No. 112 Grant street, this city, besides two s i s t e r s and one brother. Mrs. Charles Meyers of Buffalo; Mrs. Everett Kime of Niagara Fallss, and Rev. Robert H. Ball, of Fair Haven, Vermont. Mr. Ball was born in Lockport December 20. 1868, and has lived here all his life. He was an expert candy maker, and has been In the confectionery and lce Cream business, conducting stores in this clty and at Olcott Beach. He was proprietor of the old Castle Inn at Olcott, near the creek bridge, and after that was destroyed by fire, he build the New Castle Inn across from the park. The Rev. Elton Schwinger. pas- tor, performed the ceremony in front of the altar banked with white gladioli, snapdragons, palms, and ferns. Mr. Hoffman gave his daughter in marriage. The bride's gown was fashioned with a fitted bodice, and bouffant skirt with cathedral-length tram. liar finger-tip veil of silk illusion was held by a satin cap embroidered with seed pearls a nd rhlnestones. and she carried a bouquet of white rosebuds w i th White satin streamers. ATTENDANTS' GOWNS The maid of honor, alias Noreen Hoffman, sister of the bride, wore a gown of yellow taffeta and nylon net, with a matching headband trimmed with pearls. Her bouquet was made up of pink rosea. Miss Laura Lee Bobsien and Mrs. Patricia Pearson of Gasport, wera bridesmaids and ware a ttlred In gowns of aqua, with lace bodice and nylon net skirts. Their matching headbands were trimmed with pearls and they carried bou- quets of yellow roses. William Pearson Jr., acted as best man. and the ushers were Marvin and Norman Pearson of Gasport. BRIDAL MUSIC "Because" sad "O Perteet Leva" was sung by Mrs. Jesse Gifford. accompanied by Mr, Stanley Pease at the organ. Hoffman wore a navy and gray dress, with gray acessorles and a corsage of yellow roses. Mrs. Bob- zien wore a black gown with powder blue hat and gloves, and a corsage of yellow roses. A reception to 131 was held in the church dining room with 14 sensed at the bridal table, which waa decorated with white candles and roses. WEDDING TRIP For traveling, the bride wore a cream-colored suit. Following the recaption, the couple left for a trip to Syracuse and Albany. Out-of-town guests were from Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Camdan. The bride attended L o c k p o r t High School, and the bridegroom attended Hartland High School and Alfred School of Rural Engineer- ing. 9726 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 2/20/1951 A certificate of accidental death due to drowning has been issued by Dr. Henry C. Lapp of North Tonawanda, coroner, in the case of Charles Betzler, 72, of the Hoff- man Road, appleton, whose body was recovered Monday from the Barge Canal about four miles east of the city. The theory of murder and rob- bery was discounted by $15 in cash found in the drowned man's pick- ets, authorities said. The man's skull was fractured and an arm broken, but authorities added that indications were that the body had been struck or entangled in the propeller of a passing tug. Born in the Town of Newfane, Mr. Betzler had farmed all his life in that sector and in recent years had peddled vegetables in Lockport where he was last seen the afternoon of Nov. 20. He is survived by one daughter, Miss Mildred Betzler, New York City; two sisters, Mrs. John Leinz and Miss Anna Betzler, both of Burt, and three brothers, Frank, Edward and Burt Betzler, all of Appleton. 9730 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 2/21/1958 A North Park School custodian who suffered a heart attack while walking through snowdrifts on the way to work Monday, died Thursday evening (Feb. 20, 1958) in Lockport Memorial Hospital. He was John J. Lee Sr., 59, of 529 Walnut St. Born April 8, 1898 in County Roscommon, Ireland, he was the son of John and Mary Fury Lee. He came directly to Lockport from his home in 1921 and for many years worked as a millwright at the former Lockport Paper Co., also referred to as the John Jack Paper Co., located on Mill St.; and the United Board and Carton Corp. For six years he was employed by Lockport City Hospital as a maintenance man. He joined the North Park School staff four years ago. Survivors include a son, John J.; four daughters, Mrs. Eugene Mc- Donough, Mrs. Charles Blackley. Patricia and JoAnn, all of Lockport; two brothers, William of Ireland* and Patrick of Alberta, Canada, and 16 grandchildren. Van Buren, 89. of 5983 Riddle Road, Town of Royalton, widow of Godfrey Van Buren. died this morning (Feb. 22, 1968) at Buffalo General Hospital. Born Jan. 9, 1879 in the Town of Lockport, she was the daughter of Chauncey and Caroline Goss Blosser, and had lived in the Town of Royalton about 70 years. She was married to Mr. Van Buren on Nov. 16, 1898. He died Nov. 10, 1910. She had been a member of Rapids E.U.B. Church for 70 years. Prior to her marriage she taught school about four years in the Town of Lockport. Surviving are a son and two daughters. Ellis Van Buren and Mrs. Leon (Ruth) Peters, both of Lockport. Mrs. Walter (Marion) Bell of Clarence Center; one brother, Burt Blosser of Gasport; three grandchildren and five great - grandchildren. also several nieces and nephews. 9735 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 2/22/1971 Laura Leigh Blackley, two month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David M. Blackley, died unexpectedly at her home, 4901 Ridge Rd., Lockport, Sunday. County Coroner Willis C. Strickland said the child died of acute pneumonia. Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Robert W. Nagel said Mr. Blackley gave the baby artificial respiration while Mrs. Blackley called for an ambulance at 9:53 a.m. Mr. Strickland pronounced the child dead when he arrived. She was born Dec. 16, 1970 in Buffalo. Surviving besides her parents are a brother, Jeffrey,6; a sister, Orena, 4, and her grandparents, Mrs. Orena Pierce, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Blackley and William Haylett, all of Lockport. White, who died Monday night at the family home, 19 Grosvenor street, was held yesterday morning at St. Patrick's church. The Rev. James B. Bray, rector, was celebrant. The Rev. Dr. J. M. Kirby, pastor of the Holy Cross church, Cleveland, where John M. White, a son, is a parishioner, was in the sanctuary. Three great grand nephews, John Ryan, Raymond Barnum and Francis Daniels, assisted Father Bray as altar boys. Fourteen grand nephews acted as honorary and active bearers. They are: Joseph McLaughlin, Joseph White, Eugene and James Ryan, Roland Barnum, Elton Coyle, William Quinlan, Ellsworth Mc- Ewen, William McLaughlin, William White, Benjamin Furlong, Timothy Tracy, Ralph Quinlan and Raymond Barnum. Following the services burial was made in the family plot in St. Patrick's cemetery. Mrs. White was born in Lockport, the daughter of Edward and Mary Tracy. She was a lifeling member of St. Patrick's church. Her husband, for many years superintendent of the Lockport water department, died several years ago. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Charles F. Blackley, Mrs.: Bernard F. Niland and Miss Alice M. White of Lockport; one son, John M. White of Cleveland; one sister, Miss Catherine Tracy and two grandsons, J. Francis Blackley and Frederick B.
