GLENS FALLS — Audrey Cushing Harbeck, formerly of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away on May 9, 2011.
Born in North Tonawanda on August 23, 1922, she was the daughter of Merle Wilfred Husband and Cora Marion (Cushing) Husband. A life-long resident of the Tonawandas, she graduated from North Tonawanda Senior High School, Class of 1941 and attended First Baptist Church. She was married to Raymond Harbeck (now deceased) on October 18, 1942.
During World War II she worked at National Grinding Wheel while Ray was away at sea. After the war, the couple purchased and operated a Red and White Grocery Store on Payne Avenue while raising three children.
In 1963 she returned to school to become a licensed practical nurse. With a career spanning 30 years, she cared for patients in many Western New York hospitals, including DeGraff Memorial, Buffalo General and Millard Fillmore, as well as Sheridan Manor Nursing Home. Later, she continued her service as a private duty nurse, developing strong personal attachments to her patients and they to her.
A resident of Arnold Drive for over 50 years, she was blessed by her extended family of neighbors.
She is survived by three children, Jean Ellen Spencer of Glens Falls, NY, Gary Dean Harbeck (Diane) of Pembroke Pines, FL, and Glenn Ray Harbeck (Janet) of Wilmington, NC; her six grandchildren, Amy, Andrea, Jason, Lindsay, Ben and Allison and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Elva Jean and Velma Lois; one brother, Wilfred Merle; and good friend of many years, Carlton Peter.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June18th at the First Baptist Church on Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda at 3:00 PM. A private burial service is planned for North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church, 530 Meadow Dr., North Tonawanda, NY 14120, or a charity of one’s choice.
