(Lewiston) - Robert O. Helfrich, age 87, of Lewiston, Niagara County, NY, died Monday, May 12, 2008 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, in Lewiston, after a brief illness.Mr. Helfrich was born October 14, 1920 in Buffalo, Erie County, NY, the son of the late Henry and Julia (Swanson) Helfrich and had resided in Lewiston since 1949. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, serving as an Electronics Technicians Mate aboard the Destroyer, USS Muir. Mr. Helfrich retired as an Electrical Foreman from the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. after 37 years of service.He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of The Messiah in Lewiston, a former member and Exempt Member of the Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. #1, and a member of the Lewiston Seniors. Mr. Helfrich was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and Europe.He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Isabel (Budde) Helfrich; his sons, Richard H. (June) Helfrich of Lewiston and Robert A. (late Joyce) Helfrich of West Falls, NY; his grandchildren, Jennifer Helfrich of Amherst, Erie County, NY, Betsy (Gary) Myers of East Concord, NY, Brian (Alexis) Helfrich of Lewiston and William Helfrich of Holly Springs, NC; two great-grandchildren, Evan and Olivia Helfrich; two sisters, Jane (late Stewart) Hunt of Eggertsville, NY and Marge (Bill) Johnston of Orchard Lake, MI; and several nieces and nephews.A Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 30th at 10:30 AM in the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, with the Revs. Thomas Mason and Milan Slahor officiating. There is no prior visitation. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, Niagara County, NY 14094 or to the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, Niagara County, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth and Ridge Sts., Lewiston.
