Allen Roy "Smiley" Ensminger

NORTH TONAWANDA —
Allen Roy "Smiley" Ensminger of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away on May 11, 2013 at the age of 85. He was born in North Tonawanda on February 26, 1928 to Frank C. and Ida (Zihel) Ensminger. He was the husband of the late Shirley (nee Tuttle) Ensminger. Beloved father of Scott Ensminger. Brother of LaVern F. Ensminger and the late Robert L. Ensminger and Dorthy C. Root. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was the companion of Joyce Freck.
In 1945, he was employed at the Edward Hirtgam farm in Ransomville, NY where he supervised 10 German prisoners of war. He entered the United States Army in March of 1946 and served as a radio and telephone repairman. For a time, he was stationed in Newfoundland. He attained the rank of corporal, was authorized for the World War II Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged in September of 1947. On November 15, 1952, he married Shirley Tuttle and for a time they lived in Tucson, Arizona. Allen was employed at Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls for 19 years as a rocket technician. He worked on the Agena rocket engine, considered to be one of the most reliable rockets ever built and the Apollo Lunar Module ascent engine, which was responsible for getting the astronauts off the moon. He later worked in the sign shop of the Niagara County Highway Department in Lockport for 15 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Gratwick Hose Fire Company since 1951, a member of the North Tonawanda Firemans Association and a member of the American Legion Wheatfield Post #1451.
Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home, Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd. in North Tonawanda on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home beginning at 8 PM. The Rev. Devie Ellis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Allen requested that donations be made to the charity of one's choice.
