- HERMAN JOZEP WITJES, age 81 from the Town of Niagara, NY, was called to his heavenly home on December 3, 2017 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, Town of Lewiston, NY. Born in Heerlen, Holland, on June 20, 1936. Herman came to the United States on May 5, 1955. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served from 1959 to 1962. Herman was employed as a technician at the former Bell Aerospace, in Wheatfield, and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Bergholz.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne (Myers) Witjes, whom he married November 24, 1966; two daughters, Lori (Robert) Cammarata of Newfane, NY and Michele Elliott of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren, Maureen Elliott, Derek (Megan) Cammarata, Corrin Elliott, and Michael (Brooke) Cammarata; two great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Bernard Witjes of Australia, Hans Witjes of Tacoma, Washington, and Ernst Witjes of Heerlen, Holland; and a sister, Minnie Batson Witjes of Tacoma, Washington.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at St. James Lutheran Church, corner Niagara Road and Rohr Street, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield, on Saturday, December 9, at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Dan Tabor, officiating. Inurnment will take place in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church, or the American Lung Association.
