The funeral of O. Eugene Calkins,
82, of LaGrange was held Monday
afternoon at two o'clock at the LaGrange
Baptist church, Rev. John
Seely officiating. Burial was made
in LaGrange cemetery of which Mr.
Calkins had been sexton for the past
twenty years. In poor health for several
weeks he was taken to the Community
hospital two weeks ago where
his condition was considered grave
from the outset. He passed away
New Year's eve.
Oscar Eugene Calkins was born in
LaGrange August 30, 1855, and had
always resided in that section. In
1899 he was united in marriage to
Miss Lillian Brotherton who survives,
as well as nine children, Oscar,
Mrs. May McLaughlin, Harry, Ernest,
Quentin and Kenneth of Perry; Mrs.
Howard Furlow and Mrs. Robert
Wesley of Sinclairville and Mrs.
Ralph Stebline of Lockport. A sister,
Mrs. George Cox of Sucker Brook
and a brother, Henry Calkins of
Batavia also survive. Twenty-one
grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Calkins was a lifelong member
of the LaGrange Baptist church.
For many years he was an expert
in tree grafting when orchards were
more numerous than now. In the
earlier days when pretty nearly every
farmer had a flock of sheep he found
seasonal employment as a shearer.
Always a resident of LaGrange he
lived to see a large family reared
and also to enjoy the good will and
esteem of scores of people
