Mrs Kittie Peard, aged 88 years, mother
of Robert Peard of East Pembroke, was
struck by Central engine No 210, pulling a
gravel train on the Tonawanda branch at
the crossing near the Catholic church in
that village about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon
and received irjuries which are
likely to prove fatal.
When the engineer of tbe train, which
was coming east, came in sight of the
crossing he saw Mrs. Peard standing in
the center of the track, looking in the opposite
direction As she did not move as
the train neared the crossing be blew his
whistle repeatedly. No attention being
paid to the signal he then whistled for
brakes and slackened the speed of the
engine and the train was running very
slowly when it struck tbe aged lady. She
was thrown a distance of about eight feet
to the side of the track. When the trainmen
reached her she was conscious and
was carried to the house of Mrs. Kennedy
near by. Dr. Richardson, who was summoned,
found that her left hip and elbow
were broken and she was suffering from in
ternal injuries. She was taken to her son's
house about one quarter of a mile south of
the tracks. She was alive at 1:30 o'clock
this afternoon, but it is thought she can
not recover.
Mrs. Peard has not been right mentally
for some time. The family was not aware
that she had left the house yesterday afternoon
until the news of the accident was
taken to them.
