Edward J. Smith, 57. a retired
Tonawanda police captain, died last
night after being stricken by an
apparent heart attack at his home at 39
Hill Place.
The Tonawanda Fire Department's
first aid squad was called at 6.49 p.m.
and administered oxygen in an attempt
to revive Mr. Smith before he was
taken to DeGraff Memorial Hospital
where he was pronounced dead on
arrival.
A native of Tonawanda, Mr. Smith
joined the police department as a
patrolman in 1941 and was promoted
directly to captain in 1951. He served in
the Navy during World War II
He was a member of Salem United
Church of Christ, the Frontier Police
Club, Tonawandas Post 264, American
Legion, Eldredge Club and the
Gastown Sportsman's Club
Survivors include his wife, Violet L.
Stahl Smith; two sons, Timothy, who is
assistant recreation director for the
City of Tonawanda, and Michael F.;
his father, William E Smith of Key
Largo, Fla ; a sister, Mrs. Ralph
Kibler of Tonawanda and a brother.

The John O Roth Funeral Home,
Morgan and William Streets,
Tonawanda, is in charge of
arrangements. Services are scheduled
at 1:30 p.m. Friday
