CITY OF TONAWANDA —
Kenneth Jacob Hartel, Sr., age 92, of the City of Tonawanda, died on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Northgate Manor Health Care Facility. Born in Tonawanda, NY to the late Jacob and Lydia (Essenburg) Hartel, he was the owner/operator of Jake's Bar & Grill on Adam St. in the City of Tonawanda. Mr. Hartel was a US Marine Corps Veteran of WW II, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, and a founding member of the Conrad F. Kania Detachment. He was also a member of Tonawandas' Post 264 American Legion, the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, and the Niagara Hose Volunteer Fire Co. Kenneth was instrumental in establishing the Marine Corps. Monument at Fisherman's Park in North Tonawanda.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy E. (nee Dalton) Hartel; four children, Kenneth Jacob Hartel, Jr. of Springfield, MI, James Joseph (Francis) Hartel of Franklin, NY, Dennis John Hartel of New York City, and Constance Marie (James) Skinner of Martinsburg, WV; thirteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Arlene Hughes, Evelyn Braun, Helen Adams, and Vera Golkie.
Friends may call on Sunday from 1-3 PM only at JOHN O. ROTH FUNERAL HOME, INC., 25 William St. (Between Morgan & Broad Sts.) City of Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 22nd at 10 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, 71 Adam St. in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Please assemble at the chapel. Rev. Michael Uebler will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
