A general contractor for many
years, Fred J Allen, 85, of 756
Fourth street, died today in Mt. St,
Mary's hospital after being in failing
health for the. last year.
Bora In LeWlsfon, Mr. Allen
moved, to this city 70 years ago.
He was president of the Allen
Smith Contracting company, which
he organized In 1911. This company
constructed several business,
financial and other large buildings :
here, including Mt St. Mary's hospital,
St. Mary's Lyceum, Tenth
street school, Our Lady of the
Rosary church and school, Our
Lady of Lebanon church, Lutheran
church, Bergholtz, and the Cataract
National bank.
With a brother, A. Frank.Allen
and Robert Young, he also was responsible
for building the Imperial
hotel in 1890 s and remodeling the
Temperance hotel, the Converse
hotel, the International hotel and
the Cataract house. The group also
constructed more than 400°homes,
in this city.
Mr. Allen was president of the
Ayers Witmer Lumber company until
he retired in 1950, and' was one
of its founders. He was one of
the founders of the Cataract National
bank and a former director.
He was a past grand-knight of
Council 247, Knights of Columbus,
a lifelong communicant of St. Mary's
of the Cataract church, a member
of the Elks lodge and the Loyal Order
of Moose.- He also served in
the Cataract Engine and Hose company
of the Volunteer Fire department
and was a member of the
board of directors of the Exempt
Firemen's association at the time
his death.
His wife, Jennie Allen, died July
2, 1948. He is survived by five
daughters, Mrs. Grace Brett, Mrs.
Ella Skimin, Mrs. Camillus Rosa and
Mrs. Jeanette Tyrell, all of this city,
and Mrs. Alma McDougall, Charleston,
W. Va.; one sister, Mrs. Martha
Dorgan; one brother, Alexander J.
Allen, both of this city, and 11
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday
at 8:30 a.m. at the home, 756
Fourth street, and at 9 o'clock at
St. Mary's of the Cataract church.
Interment will be in Gate of Heaven
cemetery.
