TONAWANDA — Elmer P. Degenhart, age 83, of Tonawanda, died unexpectedly, Monday, January 23, 2012 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Born in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late William and Catherine (nee Egan) Degenhart and had been a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. A Navy Veteran of WWII, Mr. Degenhart was employed at National Grinding Wheel in North Tonawanda before retiring and had been an avid woodworker and fisherman. He was the brother of the late Ellen Wolf and James Degenhart.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bernice (nee Whipple) Degenhart; his son, Edward (Laura) Degenhart; two grandchildren, Brian Degenhart and Bethany (Scott) Baum; and two sisters, Margaret Batka and Katherine Whipple; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
There is no visitation. Friends are invited to attend funeral services with military honors at 1 PM on Friday at the Holy Family Mausoleum Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Elmwood Avenue in the Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to Roswell Park Cancer Institute are preferred by the family. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, INC.,Tonawanda.
