LOCKPORT — Marie A. Fechner went home to be with Lord on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Niagara Hospice House.
Born in Niagara Falls, NY on August 15, 1916, daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Cichocki) Guziejeski. Marie was a resident of Niagara Falls until December 2003, when she moved to Briarwood Manor Assisted Living in Lockport. She attended area schools, graduating from Niagara Falls High School. She later attended Kelley Business Institute.
Marie was part owner of the family business, Guziejeski Dairy (later known as Supreme Dairy). She worked as the bookkeeper there for 13 years until it closed. She enjoyed her other employments throughout her lifetime at M&T Bank on Falls Street, in retail positions, and at Niagara Falls City Hall in the building inspection office, but she was most proud of her employment with the New York State Police in Lewiston. In 1967, a position was created for secretary for Zone 1 encompassing duties for Albion, Wrights Corners and Lewiston. Marie was the first person hired for the position from which she retired in 1979.
A member of St. John de LaSalle RC Church since 1935, she served as President of its Rosary Altar Society. She was also a former member of St. John's Mothers Club, Bishop Duffy's Mothers Club, St. John's Senior Citizens and the Golden Agers Club at Spallino Towers. She maintained her membership in the Golden Agers, as well as the First Saturday prayer group until she moved to Lockport.
While a resident at Briarwood Manor, she was an eager participant in all activities, especially enjoying pinochle, bingo, craft activities and music activities. She helped to organize a singing group, often performing a solo in front of more than 50 residents. She was often known to take a newcomer by the hand and show them the way.
The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to the wonderful staff at Briarwood Manor for enabling Marie to enjoy a great quality of life; Dr. Maria Komin for her superb medical care over the past 20 years and Niagara Hospice House for the truly loving and compassionate care given the past three months.
Survivors include four children, William Fechner of Youngstown, Elizabeth (G. Brian) Swetnam of Valrico, FL, Loretta (Leonard) Riscile of Clarence and Rita (William) Mohr of Latham, NY; a brother, M. Henry (Elsie) Matthews of Geneva, NY; her daughter-in-law, Patricia (late John Jr. "Jack") Fechner of Ransomville; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John E. Fechner, Sr. in 2002; her son, John E. "Jack" Fechner, Jr. in 2009; her infant granddaughter, Marcia Marie Fechner in 1960; and her siblings, Eleanor (late Leonard) Usiak, Helen (late Edward) Strobl, Jeanette (late Walter), Jesella, Gertrude (late Alois) Nowak and her baby three year old sister, Lillian.
