On July 14, 2025, James A. Cruse Sr. passed away peacefully at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.
Born on Monday Nov. 4, 1935, James arrived the same day the “Yankee Hurricane” hit South Florida and the Bahamas. You could say two historical events happened that day, as his late parents, Arthur and Mabel Cruse, welcomed their beautiful baby boy into the world.
Growing up, James was a proud member of the Boy Scouts and led his troops with pride. He enjoyed camping as a Boy Scout, and his love of camping continued throughout his entire life, as he and his wife camped every year at Evergreen Trails in Angelica. He brought his family on vacations to Alleghany, and soon his grandkids were camping on the weekends as well. His love of camping was spread throughout his entire family.
He also had a love of woodworking and ceramics. He made family members Christmas ornaments every year, along with clocks and napkin holders. He loved watching birds, so he also began to build bird houses and bird feeders for them! He was also an avid golfer, bowler, and a huge Yankees fan. He was on a weekly bowling team for many years, as well as a golfing team! He was extremely active and thoroughly enjoyed bowling with his son, Jim.
Family was extremely important to James. He was involved in all of his grandchildren’s lives – going to dance recitals, baseball games, and even babysitting when he could. He looked forward to Christmas parties every year, and enjoyed every chance he could get together with family.
James is survived by his wife, Gloria Cruse; by his, sister Nancy Allen; by his children: James Cruse Jr. (Jo), Sue Andalora (Michael) and Kathleen Benham (Jeffrey); and by his grandchildren: Matthew, Joe (Katie), Andrew (Mackenzie), David (Alice), and Cindy. He also has many great-grandchildren.
It is always sad when one leaves his loved ones on earth. But in Heaven, there was a huge celebration as he reunited with loved ones long gone. Death provides an opportunity to reflect on and appreciate one another. Although Jame’s physical presence may no longer be with us, his impact on our lives will continue to inspire and uplift us.
Services were held Monday at North Presbyterian Church at 168 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda.
