- Manfred H. ‘Fred’ Leissle, 94, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 29, 2024 in Niagara Hospice House. Born in Niagara Falls, he was the son of the late Herman and Emily (Schweikert) Leissle and the beloved husband of Marjean (Andres) Leissle whom he married in 1959 at the former Sacred Heart Church.
Fred graduated from Niagara Falls High School, where he was a standout baseball and basketball player. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1951 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1953 to the Army Reserves. Following his discharge, he returned home and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Niagara University while he shined on the school’s basketball team.
Fred was employed as a fire/safety insurance inspector for several local insurance companies. After many years of dedicated service, he retired as a supervisor and purchasing agent at the Carborundum Company. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. John de LaSalle Church, as well as a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Fred enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing in area adultbaseball leagues. He also served as a LaSalle Little League baseball coach for many years and a basketball coach for St. John de Lasalle School.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife, Marjean Leissle and his sister, Ruth (late William) Hillard, and sister-in-law, Gail Andres.
He is survived by his children, Robert (Sherri) Leissle of Tampa, FL and Linda (Brian) Hohmann of Amherst, NY; his granddaughter, Jillian (Andrew) Leissle-Smith of Wesley Chapel, FL, as well as one niece, Becky Connell, of Grand Island, NY, and one nephew, William Hilliard, II, of Paris, TN.
The family extends its appreciation to Fred’s in-home caregivers for their compassion and encouragement during their time with him and his “buddies” Ira and Jim for their brother-like support always.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 2 from 4 – 7 PM at M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. Manfred’s Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, May 3 at 10:30 AM in St. John De LaSalle Church, 8477 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Military honors and entombment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Flowers are respectfully declined.
