Howard M. (Cap) Schlegel, 6078 Walworth
Rd., Ontario, died Thursday,
March 8, 1990 at Rochester General
Hospital. He was 71.
A 1937 graduate of Webster High
School, he lived and worked on the family
farm on the comer of Salt and
Schlegel roads before entering the service
in 1944.
He served with the 311th U.S. Army
Infantry during World War II and saw
combat duty in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a holder of the Combat Infantry
Badge and Presidential Unit Citation
among other honors.
After his military service, he worked
for Eastside Distributor as a salesman
for more than 30 years.
He was a: charter member of the
Webster VFW Post 9483, a member of
the Ontario Meyer-Ingraham American
Legion Post, the Disabled American
Veterans and the National Rifle Association.
Mr. Schlegel was an avid hunter and
fisherman. He was a lifelong gardener
known for his gigantic pumpkins.
A funeral service was held March 11
at the Smith, Lotze and Anthony Funeral
Chapel, Webster. Interment was at
White Haven Memorial Park. Rev. Eugene
MacConnell officiated.
He leaves his wife, Jean; two sons
and daughters-in-law, Thomas and
Carolyn of Red Creek and Robert and
Diane of Webster; a daughter and son in-
law Kathryn and Bruce Kroening of
Gates; nine grandchildren; a sister,
Irene Lash of East Rochester; and a
brother and sister-in-law, John and
Wanda of Fairport.
