Notes - Patricia (nee Dowd) Schmarder, age 94, of Tonawanda, died Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. Born November 3, 1922 in North Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late James and Winifred (nee Aschenbach) Dowd and had been a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. Mrs. Schmarder had worked as a teaching assistant in the Tonawanda School System and enjoyed playing Bridge, traveling and square dancing. She was an avid knitter and donated her knitting to Roswell Park to comfort cancer patients.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Glen E. Schmarder; her four daughters, Carol (David) Reichel of Chandler, Arizona, Mary (Stephen) O'Hanlon of Phoenix, Arizona, Jean Bandes of Wadbell, Arizona, and Janice (Brian) Fisher of Tonawanda; and eleven grandchildren. Also surviving are 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great-grandchildren.
There is no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday, January 20, at St. Francis Chapel, 71 Adam Street, Tonawanda. Friends invited. Inurnment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 71 Adam Street, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family.
