NORTH TONAWANDA — William Francis Greer, age 88, of North Tonawanda, after a long battle with Alzheimer's, passed away on November 22, 2012.
Beloved husband to the late Ellen (nee Kinzly) Greer. Survived by three children, Shelley (Dennis) Goltara, Karen Horrigan and Craig Greer. Also survived by cousin, Nancy Wynne and niece, Leslie Stolzenfels. Grandfather of Jennifer (Robert) Fuhrer, Sean Lane, Elizabeth Goltara, Marie Goltara, Kelly Benedict and Adam Greer. Great-grandfather of Brianna Makeley and Eden Benedict. Great-great-grandfather of Conner Makeley; and Godfather to Breanna Gerner.
Bill was born September 2, 1924 in North Tonawanda, a graduate of North Tonawanda High School and Bryant and Stratton Business School. Served in the 328th Yankee Infantry Division of the US Army during WWII where he earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal, and took part in the invasion of Normandy.
After discharge Bill was married in June of 1948 to Jeanne Krueger. He owned and operated Greer Bros. Manufacturing for many years on Walck Road, and later was employed by the US Postal Service for 22 years.
Bill was a longtime member of St. Matthew Church and served as elder, past president, Weed and Feed Team member, and was voted "Man of the Year" for his dedicated service. Bill loved boating, was an avid hunter and longtime member of the American Legion and Shawnee Volunteer Fire Dept.
A memorial service will be held at Fretthold Funeral Home, 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd., in North Tonawanda, and conducted by Reverend A.W. Moldehauer on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at 2:00 PM.
