- JOHN M. BAIRD, JR., age 72 of Wheatfield, NY, entered into rest on August 22, 2018 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on May 17, 1946; son of the late John and Dorothea (Tucker) Baird, Sr. John attended local schools and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and earned the high honor of Eagle Scout. He was also a troublemaker in his youth, and once "borrowed" a train out of the Niagara Fallstrainyard. When he offered to take his mother for a ride, she refused and told him to take it back. John was inducted to I.B.E.W. Local 237 in January of 1969, and retired February of 2002. He served on the Apprentice Board, was Chairman of the Executive Board, and was on the Board of Trustees. John served as President of IBEW from 1980-1984. He loved showing his skills as an electrician and taught many younger classes to follow in his footsteps. John loved the Brotherhood, Camaraderie and especially the friendships he made. He was the first to be requested as the General Foreman by out of town contractors, and was well respected. John also served as Treasurer of the Niagara Power Coalition for a few years. He was an enthusiastic race car owner with his racing partner Dan Skurski, in the 1970's, and a fan of the sport, and all classic cars. His favorite thing was to pick up treats and bring them to every place he frequented, the bank, doctors offices, the water department, the Union Hall, to his daughters work, his sisters in law work, and any bar he had ever been in. John always took care of "his girls". John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Donna Zuba Baird; his daughter, Kristina (Josh) Nowak; brothers, Ed (Linda) Baird of Pittsford, William (Karen) Baird of Lewiston; sisters in law, Debbie (Russell) Calvello of Niagara Falls, Denise (Tom) Reiter of Hilton; and many nieces and nephews, extended family, friends and Union Brothers. John loved all the "Little Magoos", and took great enjoyment in buying the noisiest toys to drive their parents mad. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Diane (George) Minstermann, Mary (Karl) Stender, Nancy (Jack) Davidson; inlaws, Daniel and Phyllis Zuba; and brother in law, Daniel Zuba. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Niagara County SPCA, or to the Sick Committee at IBEW Local 237. A celebration of John's life will be held at the American Legion Post 1142, 8643 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14304, on Monday, August 27 from 4-8 p.m. Arrangements were with the DuBois Funeral Home.
