- HAMMOND - Rita M. (nee Balling) Of Alden, passed away February 5, 2015, after a short illness. She is survived by her sons, Luke Hammond of Colden and Jay Hammond of West Falls, and a daughter, Nikki Offhaus of Orchard Park; three sisters, Barbara Tucker of the Town of Tonawanda, Martha (Dr. Rick) Logigian of Rochester and Alma Wojcieszek of Wheatfield; as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Alma Balling and was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Paul Balling. Visitation Sunday, February 8, 12-4 PM at COMFORT FUNERAL HOME Inc., 6469 Olean Rd., (Rte. 16 near Emery Rd.) at the East Aurora/South Wales Line (652-8716). Mass of Christian Burial Monday, February 9, 10 AM at Annunciation R.C. Church, 7580 Clinton Street, Elma. Mrs. Hammond was head of the art department and taught art at St. Mary's High School in Lancaster for 36 years. Mrs. Hammond was an active member of the East Aurora Art Society and showed her art work at many art shows in the Western New York Area. She achieved numerous awards for her work including at the Allentown Art Festival. Her work was primarily in pen and ink as well as watercolor and other mediums. She was president of the New York Forest Owners Association Niagara Frontier Chapter and a Master Forest Owner; a volunteer at Alden Meals on Wheels and the Millgrove Fire Company's Women's Auxiliary. Following her retirement, Mrs. Hammond worked at Adams Nursery in Bowmansville and as an Alden Crossing Guard.
