Prominent in local sports fields
for more than two decades, James
A. Barry, 59, died suddenly yesterday
at his home, 320 Niagara street.
Born in London, England, he
came to this city 26 years ago from
Kingston, Ont. At
his death, he was
proprietor of a
cigar store, and
newstand in Third
street. Active In
baseball and hockey
circles, he first
was c o n n e c t ed
with the Youngstown
b a s e b a ll
team, later forming
the Elperts
team, which was
entered in the
Western New York Suburban league.
When the Elperts disbanded, Mr.
Barry piloted the International
Paper club, which captured the New
York state semi-pro title. He also
jgulded the Cataracts to the finals
for the Western New York semi-pro
tournament.
Five years ago he sponsored the
first entry from this city in the
Niagara District Baseball league
when he secured a franchise for the
Wolkes.
Prominent, too. in professional
baseball, he served as business
manager of the Frontiers In the
Middle Atlantic league. At the time
of his death, he was president of
the Industrial and Independent
Baseball league.
He is survived by three daughters,
Mrs. William Vivian, Marguerite
Barry and Mrs. Howard Greenwald,
all of this city; on brother, Michael
Barry, and two sisters, Miss Mary
Beale and Mrs. Julia Cannlff. all of
London, England, and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held
Friday at 8:15 a.m. at the Finn
Funeral home, Ontario avenue and
Lockport street, and at 9 a,m, at
St. Mary's of the Cataract church.
