- Charles was born in Kirksville, Missouri. Later, he moved to the Kansas City area.
Charles and his younger brother, Joseph, pursued careers in the metal works area as tinners, turners or proprietors of hardware or metal works businesses. Coincidentally, their cousins, children of their Aunt Louise Schwenk Timmer who also lived in Kansas City, were engaged in similar businesses.
He married Louisa Cordes on February 28, 1904. They had four children, one died as an infant. Louisa was just 53 years old when she passed away at her home at 1809 Northern, Independence, Mo. Louisa died in 1935 at the age of 53.
When he was 61, Charles married Christie Inez Hartley, 47 years old, on January 17, 1942 in Maywood Baptist Church. They had no children together.
Those surviving Charles were listed as: (2nd) wife, Christie I. Hartley Schwenk; son Cordes J. Schwenk of Independence (MO), daughters Mrs. T.W. Forester of Bellflower, CA and Mrs J.M. Keeley of Bronx, NY; two stepsons Kenneth Hartley, Denver, CO; Milton Hartley, Las Vegas, NE; brother Joseph W. Schwenk of 9501 E 18th Street (Independence) and two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Taylor of Los Angeles, CA and Mrs. Martin (Emma) Stoeltzing, 3440 Montgall, Kansas City, MO. There are 9 grandchildren.
