A Chadwicks' teen-ager was fatally injured
in a one car crash early yesterday
morning on Route 69 becoming Oneida
County's 43rd traffic fatality of the year
and the second within 24 hoars.
Alan P. Davis, 19, of 65 Oneida St. Chadwicks,
died in Rome City Hospital. He suffered
a broken leg and internal injuries.
Thomas R. Cox, coroner, is withholding
a ruling pending completion of the police
investigation. After an autopsy. Cox said
Davis of an internal hemorrhage.
The victim's companion, Warren Peck,
18. of 159 Elm St., Chadwicks. remained
in fair condition at Rome City Hospital
with multiple cuts and bruises.
SHERIFFS DEPUTY Donald Fey, who
Investigated the 12:05 crash, is still trying
to determine the car's driver.
At first, both youths claimed they had
been driving, Fey said.
___When first. questionedLia the hospital,
Peck, in extreme pain, admitted being the
driver, Fey said. Four hours later however,
Peck told Fey he drove the car from Chadwicks
to the U.S. Hotel in Taberg but did
not remember who was driving home.
Before his death at 4:45 a.m. Davis first
said he was driving, then said he didn't
know and later said he didn't know what
car the deputy was talking about, Fey reported.
The 1956 convertible was registered to
Davis.
Fey said the car was going east on
Route 69 near the Lee Methodist Church
when it skidded 342 feet down the left
side of the road and crashed into a power
line pole.
Both youths were thrown from the car,
one being hurled as far as 150 feet, Fey
said. The car, which Fey said "practically
disintegrated," .skidded another 100 feet
along the road after smashing into the
power pole.
Born in Rome, Alan Davis was the son
of Arthur and Thelma Beasock Davis. He
had lived in Chadwicks the past 11 years
and attended Chadwicks High School.
He was a member of St. Anthony of
Padua Church, Chadwicks. He served two
years in the Marines and most recently
was employed in the construction field.
He leaves his father of Rome; his mother
and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Hallie
Baldwin of Chadwicks; a brother, Arthur
of Utica; a half-brother, Ronald Baldwin
.of Chadwicks; two listers, Mr». Jevem*
(June) Darling of Chadwicks and Miss
Margaret Ann Davis of Utica and a halfsister.
Miss Krystine Baldwin of Chadwicks.
"The funeral will be at 9 Monday from
the J. Donald Smith Funeral Home, Chadwicks,
and at 9.30 from St. Anthony of
Padua Church where a requiem Mass will
be offered. Burial will be in St. Mary's
Cemetery, Clayville.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 tonight
and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow.
