FRIENDS of the late John Speck,
51 years old, of this city, were
mourning his death 15 years ago today.
A Gazette item reported that
he and George Gross, 32, of Miami,
Florida, were drowned when
eight barges, loaded with grain
worth $185,000, were sunk during a
storm on Oneida Lake. The barges
were en route from Buffalo to New
York. Speck was a brother of Mrs.
Duncan Hollinger. of Jewette avenue.
La Salle. He had previously
lived with the family of Gotlieb
Specht, of 1149 Linwood avenue,
and had been employed on canal
boats for a long time.
