- George D. Beehler, 91 years old, passed away on May 28, 2017 while under the care of Niagara Hospice. He was born in Niagara Falls on February 22, 1926, the son of the late Paul and Annette (Vicarey) Beehler.
George attended local schools and joined the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the Mediterranean aboard the USS Caroline County (LST525) delivering troops, vehicles and military cargo from North Africa to Italy during the Anzio Invasion and was awarded the American Theater Medal, the European Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He also served stateside for eight months during the Korean War. In 1949, he married the former Sophie Morawic who predeceased him in 1997. George was employed by the Kimberly Clark Corp., Carborundum and lastly at Nabisco Shredded Wheat where he worked in Quality Control.
George was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was well-known for his dry sense of humor. In his earlier years, he was an avid fisherman and hunter and later his hobby became photography. He joined several camera clubs in Western New York and Southern Ontario and won many awards for his photos. Some of his pictures have been used in brochures for tourist attractions and historical sites in this area. He was a former member of the Niagara County Sportsmen's Club, the LaSalle Sportsmen's Club, The North End Kiwanis and a proud member of the NRA.
George is survived by his son, Kurt P. (Pamela Stempien) Beehler; and his four grandchildren, Jason, Stephanie, Eric and Jennifer; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, George was predeceased by his son, Karl Beehler; his grandson, Kurt P. Beehler, Jr.; his step-mother, Jean (Welch) Beehler; and his brothers, Paul, Bernard and Ronald Beehler.
Private funeral services with Military Honors were held at the LABUDA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 356 Portage Road with interment in Niagara Falls Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston. Friends wishing to make a memorial contribution in George's honor are requested to consider Niagara Hospice, Inc.
