KENMORE — Frank S. Sommers, age 79, of the Town of Tonawanda and formerly of the City of Tonawanda, Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. A lifelong resident of the Tonawandas, he was the son of the late John and Laura Sommers; brother of the late Josephine, Harry, Leo, Leonard and Irene; and brother-in-law of the late Dorothy (the late Philip) Krueger. "Captain Frank" was a 1952 graduate of Tonawanda High School where he excelled in basketball. He was voted Captain of the Niagara Frontier All Star Basketball Team in 1952. He was also a US Army veteran serving during the Korean War. Frank owned and operated Frank's Barber Shop on Young Street in Tonawanda for 30 years. He was also employed by Consolidated Freightways for 20 years. He was a member of St. Amelia RC Church, St. Benedict's Senior Group, Amherst Senior Center, a former member of the Eldredge Club, a softball player for many years and an avid gardener. He loved to travel with his wife, Theresa, and you would often see him driving around town with his pal, Jiggs.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Theresa E. (nee Ganster) Sommers; six children, Sandra (Ronald) Butticci of North Tonawanda; Steven Sommers of Tonawanda; Andrew (Ann)) Sommers of Amherst; Theresa (Carl) Bogdan of Lockport; Julie (John) Lunghino of Amherst; and Margaret (James) Higgins of Lockport; 11 grandchildren, Eric, Lindsay, Crosby, Danielle, Kevin, Keith, Katelyn, Chelsie, Paige, Anthony and Cameron; and two great-granddaughters, Ani and Emma; his sister-in-law, Rosemary (Dr. Dennis) Heimbach of Williamsville; and his brother-in-law, Edward (Carol) Ganster of Tonawanda. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at John O. Roth Funeral Home, Inc., 25 William St. (between Morgan & Broad Sts.), in Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:30 AM in St. Amelia R.C. Church, 2999 Eggert Rd., in the Town of Tonawanda. Friends invited. The Rev. Msgr. Thomas F. Maloney will officiate. A private entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Chapel Columbarium.
