Carl D. Penders

LEWISTON — Carl D. Penders, 87, of Youngstown, NY, was taken from this earth on December 15, 2012, at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Louis and Florence (Barone) Penders.
After graduating from Trott Vocational High School in 1943, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy. He did his basic training in Great Lakes, IL, and afterwards was assigned to torpedo duty aboard a PT boat as a Gunner's Mate 2nd Class. He was immediately shipped to the South Pacific where he saw action in the Battle of Okinawa. Carl was honorably discharged in 1946 and awarded the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal and WW II Victory Medal. After his service in the Navy, he attended Alfred State College on a basketball scholarship.
Following Carl's graduation from college, he was fully employed for the United States Postal Service for 37 years and also worked for his uncle, Tom Barone, at Ray's Men Shop. After his retirement, he and his wife, Joyce, opened up the Harvest Inn, an Italian restaurant in Youngstown, NY. After 15 years of serving his Italian cuisine to the public, Carl retired.
Carl was an avid sports fan who loved the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. He was an excellent golfer and was a lifetime member of Niagara Frontier Country Club. In 1953 he was the Club Champion, and was proud of the fact that he had a hole-in-one in his lifetime.
Mr. Penders leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Joyce E. Penders; his daughters, Catherine (late David) Williams and Carol Butera, both of Niagara Falls, NY; one son, Carl (Anna) Penders of Youngstown, NY; his step-children, Elizabeth (Steve) Grogan of Rochester, NY, Maureen Certo of Lewiston, NY, and Bridget Miller of Beaumont, TX; his grandchildren, Jamie (Tom) Downey, Mark (Sasha) Williams, Aaron Williams, Kevin Christopher and Kragh Marshall, Carl Robert, Samantha and Alex Penders, Ryan and Patrick Grogan, Joseph and Emily Certo; three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Tyler Downey, and Benjamin Williams. He is also survived by his nephew, Carl (Debbie) Capolupo; his brother-in-law, Sam Capolupo and several cousins. He was also predeceased by one sister, Genevieve Capolupo and many aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 19th, at 10:00 AM in St. Bernard's RC Church, 218 Hinman St., Youngstown, NY, with Msgr. J. Thomas Moran officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co., 625 Third Street, Youngstown, NY 14174; Camp Good Days and Special Times, 6430 Transit Rd., Suite 200, Depew, NY 14043; or Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, 5285 Lewiston Rd., Lewiston, NY 14092.
