Mrs. Horace G. Berean, Hamburg
civic leader who died suddenly last
Thursday while visiting a sister in
Cleveland, was buried in Prospect
Lawn Cemetery Saturday following
private services at her home, 171
Union Street. Rev. William T.
Brown, pastor of Lake Street Presbyterian
Church, officiated.
A guest of her sister, Mrs. Mercedes
Stephens of Cleveland, for
three weeks, Mrs. Berean planned
to leave for Hamburg Friday evening.
The previous night she suf-
fered a heart attack from which
she did not recover. She was 62
Mrs Berean was long prominent
In civic activities here. She was an
organizer and former president of
the Hamburg Garden Club, a member
of the Unitarian Alliance, of
the Hamburg group of Erie County
League of Women Voters, and the
Women's Society of Lake Street
Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Berean was the daughter of
the late Jeremiah and Margaret
Hurley of 47 Bidwell Parkway,
Buffalo. She was a graduate of St.
Mary's College, South Bend, Ind.
In 1902 she married Mr. Berean
and nine years later the couple
moved to Hamburg.
Besides her husband and mother,
she is survived by two sons, John
and Horace Jr.; two daughters,
Mrs. Paul Wyckoff and Miss Alice
Berean, all of Hamburg; one brother,
Charles Rymond Hurley of
Buffalo; two sisters, Mrs. Stevens
and Sister Superior M. Reginald of
Norfolk, Virginia, and one granddaughter,
Caren Wyckoff of Hamburg.
