NIAGARA FALLS - Mary Jane (Bird) Learn, age 82, born in Niagara Falls, NY, entered into heaven on May 30, 2014. Daughter of the late David George and Alice (Murphy) Bird.
Born and raised in Niagara Falls, she attended St. Mary's of the Cataract School and graduated in 1951. She spent three years working at the Novena Office of Niagara University and then went on to working in various doctor's offices for 34 years, as a Medical Transcriptionist, retiring in 1993. On the 24 of April 1954, she married Charles E. Learn. Mary was very generous in donating to charities and one of her most beguiled was the annual Fireman's Toy Fund. She also supported a child from Ecuador, South America for over 25 years, and continuously donated to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Mary was well-known for her baking and cooking and everyone loved her chocolate cakes and apple pies. She loved to sew and made many of her children's clothes when they were young. She could not wait to vacation in Myrtle Beach or around St. Petersburg, FL and Frankenmuth, MI, and through Amish country in Pennsylvania and Ohio. She just liked to travel.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; a brother, Richard Bird (Rose Marie) of Niagara Falls; sister, Joan Kralick, also of Niagara Falls; daughter, Deborah Batley and grandson, Dylan of Niagara Falls, and many nieces, nephews and her very close friend, Deborah Bailor, and her loving Border Collie, Haley. She was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia and a son, David and brothers, Donald and Edward (Marion) Bird.
Visitation will be at LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Ave., on Monday, June 2, 2014, from 4 to 8 PM and Tuesday after 11 AM, where prayers will be said at 11:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial will be said in her honor at St. Vincent de Paul Parish (Prince of Peace site) at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 3. Interment will be in the mausoleum at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Memphis, TN, or the Niagara Falls Fireman's Toy Fund.
