LOCKPORT —
May 23, 2013, on the wings of Angels, John E. Skutt was reunited with his beloved wife, Betty E. Skutt, in heaven, while surrounded by his family under the loving care of the staff at Niagara Hospice House. Born on December 4, 1936, in Newfane, John is the son of the late George and Flora (Thompson) Skutt.
He is survived by his three daughters, Lois (Jack) Voelker of Rushford, NY, Cathy (Chester) Michalak of Lockport, NY and Janet (Jack) Green of Barker, NY; sisters, Shirley (Robert) Harbor of Florida, Elizabeth (Dave) Hollenbaugh and Eva (Orland, Sr.) Kipp, both of Lockport, NY, Beverly (late Bucky) White of California; brothers, LaVern (Bonnie) Skutt and Robert (Gail) Skutt of Florida. John is also survived by ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; several cousins and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by one son, David B DePoy; sister, Audrey Wittcop; and brothers, Fred, George and Richard Skutt.
John was a member of the United States Navy from 1955 to 1961 when he was Honorably Discharged. He was employed by the Newfane Lumber Co. before he accepted employment at Harrison Radiator Co. Lockport, NY where he retired in 1994 after 30 years of service. Very civic minded, John was a 33-year Active Member of the Rapids Volunteer Fire Department. He served two terms as the "Mayor" of Rapids, Town of Lockport, organizing many community, family- friendly events enjoyed by all who attended. John also belonged to the Navy Marine Club Ship 110, Lockport, NY, the Redman Club and the IOOB Club, and the Woodlands Homeowners Assoc. where he held various official titles. He and his late wife, Betty, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with The UAW Retirees Travel Club. One such trip they found especially enjoyable was out west where they "white water" rafted on the Colorado River. He will be especially missed by his loyal companion, his cat, Mikey.
Friends and family are welcome for visitation at the Sherrie-Bream Funeral Home, 4521 Main Street, Gasport, NY, on May 28, 2013 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral Services to be held the following morning, May 29, 2013, at 11 AM with interment at Hartland Cemetery, Gasport, NY immediately following.
