A. retired, captain of the
city's Fire Department, Joseph
F, Birmingham, 71,. of 717
Augustus Place, died Thursday
in Mount St. Mary's Hospital
after a month's illness..
Capt. Birmingham was appointed
to the F i r e Department
Jan, 12;. 1920 and named
a captain on Oct. 23, 1950. He
spent most of his time at Fire
Headquarters. However, for
the last eight years before his
retirement on June 4, 1958,
he was at Fire Hall No. 5, Buffalo
Avenue at the City Water
Works. He was a member "of
the Niagara Falls Fire Fighters
Association,
He was born in C o u n ty
Clare, Ireland, and lived here
55 'years* .
In World. War I he served
with the U.S. Army t h r ee
years in France and Germany,
taking part in six different
battles. He received the medal
of bravery.
Surviving a r e his wife,
A n n a M. Birmingham; a
daughter, Mrs. Frank (Ruth)
Paterniti; a sister, Mrs. Clyde
Swartz, all of this city, and
two granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held
at 9 a.m. Monday at the Otto
Redanz Funeral Home and at
9:30 at Our Lady of Lebanon
Church. Burial will be in Gate
of Heaven Cemetery.'
