- Ruth Fike Lyons, age 88, of Lockport, NY passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Born June 26, 1930 in Turner Douglas, WV, Ruth is the daughter of the late George M. Friend and Mabel (Duel) Friend. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Darwin O. Fike on September 24, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Robert Lyons of Kitzmiller; two sisters: Tillie Bowser and Vera Thorn; and three brothers: Otis Friend, Glenwood “Bud” Friend and Donald Friend.
Ruth is survived by three daughters: Sharon (Larry) Larimore of Harrington, DE, Becky (Roger) Christiana of Bedford, PA and Debbie (Tim) Buhr of Lockport, NY; 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; two sisters: Francis Gnegy of Oakland, MD and Ann Tolliver of Herndon, WV and one brother: Jim Friend of Falls Church, WV.
Ruth graduated from Oakland High School in 1948. She resided in Crellin most of her life until she moved to Grantsville where she resided until 2009 when she moved to Lockport to be with her daughter and family.
After graduation, Ruth worked at the HP Clothing store and later at the Oakland High School as a bookkeeper and secretary. She worked alongside her husband, Darwin, for many years as they ran a small dairy supply business, Surge Sales & Service.
She was secretary/treasurer of the Crellin Methodist church for many years. She also directed several children’s ministries. She and her family later became members of Deep Creek Baptist church where she taught the Junior Sunday School class and sang in the choir.
Ruth co-founded the Southwesterners 4-H club in Crellin where she shared her passion for knitting and crocheting with many little girls in the area.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation at the Newman Funeral Home, 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD, on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 11 am until 1 pm. Funeral Services will be held immediately following at 1 pm from the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens, Oakland MD beside her husband, Darwin.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
