- Ledyard - James Robert Haskell, 99, of Gales Ferry, passed away Nov. 27, 2023, after a brief illness.
He was born in Washington, D.C. in 1924, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Roy T. Haskell. James graduated from Lockport High School in New York in 1942, and the New York State Merchant Marine Academy in 1944, where he received a commission in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and a Third Mate's license in the Merchant Marine. He served on Merchant Marine ships during World War II and was present in Antwerp during the Battle of the Bulge.
During the Korean War he was on active duty with the U.S. Navy, serving as a Lieutenant Commander with the 6th Fleet, on the minesweeper USS Sprig. Following retirement from the U.S. Navy he received a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Buffalo, and an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was employed as an engineer at Electric Boat in Groton for 29 years, retiring in 1991.
He is survived by his sons, Robert and Thomas of Gales Ferry, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Eileen Haskell; his brother Roy of Feura Bush, N.Y.; and his sister Virginia (Hill) of Norwich.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gales Ferry. Interment will follow at Avery-Stoddard Cemetery in Ledyard.
